careful what you wish for.....who is there to repalce Offa if he goes?

Last year, as a bench middle forward he was bang on average; so not a superstar of course but he was churning out 150+ metres and 30 odd tackles a game last year.

Not a matchwinner, but as a example of the woeful middle range contract management under a salary cap the club did, hes prime evidence of our failure

If we want to move him on because he is overpaid for what he produces, well thats fine but why not wait until 2021 off seaosn where we can make those targeted long term signings?

he is a product of our nursery/pathways system and knows the club. Id give him a chance next season. Because i just dont see where we get a replacement for him?

because if we get couple hundred thousand dollars off of our cap before next season we can front load some contracts or upgrade a player. Dearden and Staggs could both be upgraded and extended and given an extra 200k each in 2021 and have their contracts decrease in value in 2022.

um...yeh in theory we could...

Again, i come back to those middle ranged contracts....

Extend both Dearden and Staggs....absolutely....

Upgrade...??...well....by how much..??? Front loading these contracts shouldnt appeal for guys whose best days are ahead of them...

I've liked Capewell for a couple of years now. Very solid player.

He could be our version of Mitch Aubusson, highly versatile, underrated skill, good defender, tries his guts out every week.
I'd grant you that he looked a lot better defensively in the handful of games this year at Penrith but honestly he was a bit of a missed tackle fiend at the Sharks only the year before.

Why wouldn’t it appeal? It’s the same money over the same amount of years just spread differently

as for the amounts well that’s a far more detailed answer but whatever is a reasonable price. I don’t know what either are on right now or how much for they are demanding.

but for example if Dearden is on 200k per season and his contract expires in 2021 (I don’t know if it does, he was just an example) then you offer him 900k over 3 years.

So we lock him in for 2 extra years and he gets a pay rise of 100k per year. Pay him $400k in 2021 using some of the money we save from Offa’s 500k contract.

900k total
2021 $400k
2022 $250k
2023 $250k

that will give us an extra 150k to play with in 2022 and beyond. Do the same with another player (I gave the example of Staggs because his contract is close to expiring) and we have an extra $300k in 2022 and beyond. All thanks to moving Offa on early.

It doesn’t matter the player, contract length, or amount - the theory is the important part. Let your imagination go wild and do what you want with it. I just think having a spare 500k (or there about) is more valuable to us than what Offa provides.

heres my point; put yourself in the players position.

No doubt their respective manager is laying out a career path that sees him become a rep standard player for many years.

Then you approach the club and they say "yeh we agree you are on the path to rep honours here" and then slap down a contract that is front loaded.

So we have a offer that is conveying the message that by the time it expires youll be a fully fledge Origin/International player being paid LESS than you were at the start as a simple NRL level guy...

I just dont see that tactic being appealing to either player or their management...

Thats not how it works. You can very easily add rep incentives to a contract. Also, that would be supremely illogical thinking from the managers perspective as not only is it literally the exact same amount of money over the same period of time, but by getting the biggest proportion up front your client can make more significant investments and accrue higher interest over the period by having access to the more money sooner. The players would actually make more money by getting paid highest in their first year.

if you’re manager allows you to knock back the offer based only on the fact that it will feel like you are being paid less as you improve, then you should sack them.

It is also an incentive to break contract when clubs come sniffing in years 2 and 3 as it reduces.

It's a nice idea in theory but it seems almost guaranteed to come back and bite us on the ass for the exact reasons you mentioned.

I know some posters get upset about AFL talk but in this instance it is warranted because Dayne Beams (the ex-Lions captain) was on a heavily front-ended contract for four years and once year 4 came around, Collingwood came sniffing and he went back to them on a big contract. There were several other factors involved, particularly mental health but it does set the warning of front-ending contracts.

It’s definitely not without its risks but I mitigate the risk you could just divide Offa’s 500k over more players. You’d be pretty unlucky for 7 players to all burn you once their contracts had dropped by 75k per year.

Another Bird ?

I’d prefer they chased Widdop for this job but Foran would be a good buy on a small contract. Last I heard he wanted a fortune, though his latest injury might have given him a reality check.

Small contract - sign him up
Large contract - Don't you dare!

The other caveat is...Milford to fullback in 21, serious.
If this rumour is true I imagine Milf is probably going to be shopped around. Maybe the dogs will take him?
