I think we have to keep Bird now that Staggs will miss a large part of next season.

totally agree, on many levels, we deserve 1 full season of production from him at least...Staggs injury makes this even more pressing...

Jack Bird will be released by the Broncos from the final year of his contract to return to Sydney if a deal can be struck.

The Daily Telegraph reported the Broncos are looking to offload Bird if another club is prepared to pay $500,000 of his $975,000 deal in Brisbane.

The Dragons, Sea Eagles and former club the Sharks are all in the market for centres.

Bird has had an unhappy time since moving to the Broncos in 2018, with injuries restricting him to just eight games in his first season and nine in 2019.

The 25-year-old didn’t even play a game in 2020 after being rubbed out with a serious knee injury in a pre-season training mishap.

Bird has scored 19 tries in 83 NRL games since his debut for the Sharks in 2015 and won a premiership with Cronulla in 2016, before moving to the Broncos after the following season.

Provided he can put his poor run of injuries behind him getting Bird for $500,000 for season 2020, with the Broncos chipping in the rest would be a steal.

Bird would likely sign an incentive based one-year-deal in a bid to prove his worth with the potential to extend should he remain fit throughout next season and get back to his best.

Scott Prince broke his leg twice and was off the field more than on it for us back then. We
let him go and the rest is history - won a GF with the tigers and went on to be one of the Titans best. No reason Bird cannot come back ok.

Of all the players to move on early, Bird is one that actually has a lot to offer if he can at least hold his body together until Staggs returns.

You’d jettison Milf, Oates, Offa,Croft, Macca, Isaako all before Bird at this point.

About friggin time, still 2 years too late to be honest.
$975,000 x 2.5yrs flushed down the drain.

Lets be honest, we could have seen this coming a mile away. The Bird contract was a terrible deal before he spent 2 seasons sitting on his ass. It was a knee jerk response to a poor end to a season when the fans were demanding action on the recruitment front. He wasn't what we needed at the time and certainly not at the money we are paying. I'm speculating here but I think Kevvie is of this opinion and that is why we're beginning to hear this talk of offloading him now.

His signing is second only to Kennedy in how bad it has been for the club. We have basically had 900k sitting in the bleachers for 2 seasons.

He was signed in April ... not the end of the year

P.s. I read somewhere (can't remember where though) that Kevvie wanted to keep Bird ... he'd actually be the only premiership winner on our books next year

You mean the totally legit premiership the Sharks won in between cheating the cap ...

Why do people want to keep Bird?

If we release him by paying $500k, we get $475k freed up.

I'd rather use that 475k than keep Bird.

On who though? I think us having to pay any of his contract has just left a bad taste in a number of peoples mouths. He took up his player option for this year and now is apparently homesick and wants to return to Sydney. Can't blame him of course but it's still a pretty shit move.

Has he actually come out and said he wants to move back, is homesick etc? Or are we relying on the word of Buzz? It could just as easily be a case of the club wanting to move him on and are therefore willing to take care of half the contract value

If those figure are true, I'd prefer the full 975k thanks.

I think Bird is worth about 400k max so I would rather the 475k because noone is going to pay the full 975k...

We can use the coin to keep the juniors we want to keep or we can use it to go towards a decent marquee signing. I have heard Munster may be keen to come to QLD. We should try as hard as we can to free up cap space so that when there is a good opportunity, we can jump at it.

An extra 200k each to Dearden and Haas.

I find it crazy that Haas is on 500k and Lodge is on 700k (I'd be happy for broncos pay some of his contract in order to get him out of the club)... Surely Haas is deserving of an upgrade. Dearden deserves one too if we are saying he is our full time and long term 7.
