how about you back up that claim he was sulking about playing center by posting these articles ... and let's make it that these articles are NOT from Rothfield, because he still can't beleive that Bird would dare leave the Sharks (especially to come to us)

there is a difference about saying in an interview that you "prefer" a position where you get your hands on the ball and sulking

otherwise what Corey Oates has been doing this season would be classed as sulking

Sure thing.

He even admits himself that he was sulking about going back to centre and acknowledges that he needs to improve his attitude.

BRISBANE’S $3 million man Jack Bird has revealed his confidence is shot after being moved from five-eighth and he hasn’t played good football in two years.
An emotional Bird told The Courier-Mail he has not been happy during the early stages of his Broncos career.
He missed the first two rounds of the NRL season and has barely fired a shot in five appearances for the Broncos.
The NSW Origin star said his confidence took a blow after coach Wayne Bennett shifted him from five-eighth to centre during last Friday’s loss to Melbourne at Suncorp Stadium.
“My confidence dropped pretty heavy after I moved back to left centre,” Bird said.
“I wasn’t having a good game as it was and to move back out to centre where you get no ball … my attitude needed to change a little bit towards that. It’s a team game.

That's hardly sulking. It is recognising that his confidence was rocked and he knows he needed to pick up his bottom lip and get on with it. At this stage I wish Oates would do similar.

“I wasn’t having a good game as it was and to move back out to centre where you get no ball … my attitude needed to change a little bit towards that.

That's definitely him admitting that he was having a bit of a sulk. It's nice that he admitted it though, shows that he's self aware, unlike a lot of players. He just has to mentally prepare for the fact that centre might be his only good position at this stage of his career, much like Oates on the wing.

I don't care if he ever plays well for us, the fact is we don't actually even need him to play well for us. We don't need what he brings to a side.

I'd have McGuire, Pangai, Carrigan, Ofahengaue and probably others at lock before I'd put Bird there

I'm with you. I'd also rather play Staggs, Kahu or Opacic at left centre, not because they are better than Bird (who is a right centre anyway, not left) but because they would be taking up far less of the salary cap to produce fairly similar results (if not better) than what Bird showed at left centre before his injury.

I'd also prefer Boyd and Isaako at fullback (and I'm not impressed with Boyd this year).

You've nailed it with lock.

I'd rather Gillo, Su'A, even Glenn, Fifita, TPJ over him in the second row as they are cheaper and / or better.

I'd rather anyone else at halfback, even KNik.

I'd also rather KNik and Staggs over him in the bench utility role.

The only place I'd consider Bird is at hooker but Wayne isn't going to move Macca for him and then there is Turps who looks quite promising.

Even the very best coaches/clubs get it wrong or make a decision they later might regret. I also just don't see where Bird fits in.

The big issue with Bird for me is we havent seen him injury free as a Bronco.

As for those saying there isnt a space for him at lock, i think its perfectly doable and its the only position thats ever made sense. We can have a prop rotation next year of Lodge, Offa, TPJ and Moose backed up by Haas, Flegler, Carrigan, Mago and Fai. Back rowers Gillett, Sua, Fifita, Glenn, Savelio ( and Staggs if necessary ). We can then let Bird be the ball playing lock Bennett intended him to be, and we have the option of backing him up with Moose or TPJ if he gets injured.

A bit of hyperbole from the OP there, I assume (hope?).

I think the argument is that Bird is surplus to our needs - and after 17 rounds, certainly in my opinion at least, it’s a pretty credible point.

I was actually all for signing him, because he is an above average player who is ultra competitive. Qualities that are good in any team sport.

That said, and I could very easily be wrong, but if he was brought here to play 13, through whatever circumstances (poor form, injury, whatever it is) he’s well down the pecking order now.

It also didn’t make sense to bring him here as a 13 when we had the QLD and AUS lock and desperately needed a 7.

Anyway, that’s all academic. Unless he up and leaves or we reach a mutually beneficial outcome, he’s here for another 3 years. So I certainly hope he reaches the lofty heights he’s been touted to be capable of.

The problem is though, at what expense will it be? Who are we inevitably going to lose because we have him on our books?

We did chase a halfback in Taylor at the same time as we chased Bird so it wouldnt have been one or the other tbf.

The one issue i have had with Bird and Bennett this year is the constant chopping and changing of the team to accommodate him, which i think has affected both the team and individuals at times. Once we knew the Sharks hadnt really taken care of him and his injuries, we should have just got him right instead of trying to nurse him through.

Has Bennett ever confirmed that he wanted him here as a lock?

Just sayin - Norman....according to a source his attitude has picked up remarkably last month.

Not directly, but just from what I got told it's what the plan was. I do recall an interview where he seemed to hint towards him playing lock, wish i could remember where it was.

we were trying to sign a halfback, Ash Taylor, at the same time .... but even if we didn't chase Bird, we never would have increased the offer to him ... so clearly Bird didn't stop us from signing a halfback, just ridiculous offers from the Dragons and Titans did

Yeah of course, which is why I said I don’t know who we could have even signed as a halfback. I wasn’t blaming the signing of Bird for that. I was trying to say that the only position that we need to fill with a big signing is halfback, and therefor Bird, although a great talent, doesn’t play in a position we need. So his huge contract could have been used to hold onto all our young talent.

We wanted a lock so we let go of arrow and recruited jack bird. :BangHead:

No, we wanted a ball playing lock. Big difference. Arrow has an offload, but he isnt a ball player.

I'm still not buying in to the "Bird was brought here to be a lock" idea that you're constantly spruiking as truth.

Nobody asked you to, just from what I've been told and a few little things from Bennett ( which I might be reading too much into ) I'm sure we got him as a lock. Plus I dont see any sense in any other position for him. Not going to move Boyd from fullback, not going to move Milf from 5/8. Way too much money to be paying a center and the fact he doesnt like center. He sees lock as his best position as well, so lock to me has always been the logical choice for him at the Broncos.

I find this whole bird debate hilarious (i need to get out more)...

Seriously, everyone is forgetting how good he is. See the impact kotoni staggs had on the game for 25 mins the other night? Well, bird played to that high a standard for about 2 years until these injuries set in and he played through them. Now everyone on here agrees we will have to find a spot for kotoni staggs somewhere in the team because he seems like a guy who can make things happen right? Well bird is a more versatile version of staggs with more aggressive defence. I dont give a shit where he plays, as long as he is hitting form because make no mistake, if he hits form every single person on here will be saying we got a bargain! (Even though no one knows what we actually paid for him)

The guy is currently sidelined with an injury and played 8 games with an injury so painful you are advised to not use your arms to push out of a chair and he was tackling 100+ kg men runnibg as hard as they can at him. No wonder he didnt want to run the ball lol...

And this lack of patience with him was the same lack of patience we used to judge pur forward pack, ive heard people call isaako goalkicking maranta, pearson never to wear a broncos jersey again, glenn should have retired 2 years ago, milford cant kick or tackle, the list is endless.

Bird may not work out, but given bennett and nolans track record of making everyone have egg on their face, i am willing to wait till he gets a season injury free to prove it either way.

I am glad the people on this forum dont have anything to do with recruitment or retention. We would end up like the titans year on year. Impulsive buys, over paying players to keep them and trying to get quick fixes with proven performers scrapped for 2-3 good game debutants. We have and are building an amazing squad. Bennett must laugh every time this stuff comes up, hes got patience and is proven right 95% of the time...

Really hope we don't loose Isaako, especially to the roosters.. If you believe the rumors, Robinson held a sit down meeting with Isaako last week in Brisbane.
I feel we will loose one of our young guns especially due to the talent, and the fact that so many are off contract at the end of this year..
Isaako has solely won us multiple games with his conversions, something we haven't had at the Broncs for many years.
Hopefully he genuinely meant that he wants to be a Bronco for life.
