It's one thing to have a shopping list ... It's another thing entirely for your shopping list to contain the most expensive rookie on the market, one with reported offers of 1 million a season ... Especialy after claiming you can't afford a player worth 400-500k a season.

He shouldn't have tried to spin a load of shit to his members, but rather informed them that the club would be undertaking to get their roster in order by moving on over Paid dead wood and replacing them with quality value for money players
 
Nathan Brown would do a better job than Mal of getting their roster back in order. Probably a long hard slog just like Newcastle and the Bulldogs though.

Personally, I don't think it means shit either way. GC has been a graveyard for all sporting codes since pretty much forever. Them continuing to fail or eventually meeting their demise has no real impact imo.

Their is , it's their recruitment. Can't buy players until they move some on. Can't buy much unless they move players on. They need to do similar to us in regards to moving players on and investing in some youth , and get them to buy into the process.

You understand how unprofessional the phrase 'moving on overpaid dead wood' would sound coming from a senior employee of their business right?

All he said was they would be enquiring about David Fifita (amongst others) and whether they have a realistic hope of securing him or not, there is nothing wrong with them enquiring and letting their members know they're at least enquiring and showing interest in the best young talent on the market.

It's not exactly an attractive proposition to put it to your members that 2/3's of your roster are overpaid and shit house and you'll need to move them on first, even if that is the case.

I have no problem with them aspiring to sign guys like Fifita and letting their members know that's what they're aspiring to as well. Its a business and he's doing his part in trying to get fans to stand behind and stick solid with that business.

I suspect the animosity towards Mal stems from insecure Broncos fans who are paranoid that someone is going to poach Fifita from us. Firstly, I doubt he's going, and secondly, if he was going I doubt it's to the Titans. But there is absolutely nothing wrong with them throwing their hat in the ring and giving it a shot, even if it is an urealistic one. When you run last you have nothing to lose and everything to gain.

Yeah because that poster was suggesting that’s how he should word it in reference to the deadwood...

It does to the kids who come up through their junior comps and top notch school systems and have no NRL team to aspire to play for. It's not like Brisbane will pick them all up. They'll likely end up at the Roosters and Storm etc and even more Queensland kids will wind up playing for non-Queensland clubs.

Based on the titans and their junior recruitment this seems to be happening anyway. I mean haas was right in their lap.

I don't see how it matters that qld kids will play for non qld teams. If we miss them and other clubs scoop them up, that's on our scouting system. As long as those kids find a place somewhere in the nrl, it's all gravy.

If you're a Titans fan and you cant work out for yourself that they'll need to move players on to sign new talent then you've got to find a way out from under that rock, because it shouldn't be up to Big Mal to spell such a blatantly obvious thing out to you in a letter.

To put it in a context that is in Brisbane's favour so perhaps fellow Broncos fans can see it without the animosity:

If Kalyn Ponga indicates he's willing to entertain offers, then I have absolutely no issue at all with Paul White or Seibold etc coming out and declaring we'd be interested in speaking to him. He's from our own back yard and he's one of the most exciting prospects in the game today. If we didn't have an interest in speaking to him I'd honestly want to know why if anything.

That's despite the fact we've just locked up a heap of young guys. Despite the fact our cap is already quite tight. Despite the fact that we would obviously need to move players on to fit him in if we were serious.

We obviously couldn't pay overs and we likely wouldn't be the highest bidder. But if we weren't at least trying to gauge any interest from him about a deal then I'd be questioning the people running the club to be honest.
 
If Paul White said we're looking at making an offer to Ponga while a month earlier saying we only have 100k in the cap, I'd think he was either crazy, or a lying POS. Take your pick which is better to be running a club.

If Mal was sincere (I'll take the assumption he wasn't lying) his letter to members would be about the difficult cap position the club is in, and how as a club, they've changed their internal processes to make better recruitment decisions and identify emerging talent. Not some horse shit about a shopping list while being broke as well as the most unappealing club in the NRL to begin with.

only thing i can think is their salary cap position might be different when the players they identify as targets come off contract
 
I think in some things he is trying to do Mal is spot on. If they can start getting local players vom i ng through or recruited back from other clubs at least they may start to attract local kids in the future. He has done himself no favours though saying they want to talk to the likes of Fifita after he said they don't have a pot to piss in.

Anthony Seibold explains Brisbane’s recruitment strategy

Brisbane coach Anthony Seibold says the club won’t be aggressively attacking the open market and is backing his youthful roster to break the longest premiership drought in Broncos history.


Seibold heads into Brisbane’s final-round clash against Canterbury on Saturday night under pressure to piece together a long-term playmaking spine that can apply the premiership polish to Brisbane’s forward firepower.


There is a view Seibold needs to recruit a dominant five-eighth to eventually replace newly-transitioned pivot Darius Boyd, who turns 33 next year and may not play on beyond 2020.

The Broncos have 11 players off-contract next season, with Jack Bird, Anthony Milford and Andrew McCullough all having options in their favour, giving Brisbane some room to move under the salary cap.


But after blooding eight debutants this season, including 18-year-old halfback Tom Dearden, Seibold says developing Brisbane’s bevy of young guns will take priority over a spending spree in pursuit of their first title since 2006.


Asked on Fox’s League Life program if he would explore the player market next season, Seibold said: “We’ll have a look at that.


“One thing we want to do is drive our focus against the Bulldogs this week.


“We’ll look at what space we have in our roster. To be fair, there’s not too many spaces to fill, but we will do a comprehensive review of our programs and the areas we need to strengthen.”


Seibold defended his decision to overhaul Brisbane’s roster in his first five months in charge.


Kiwi Test utility Jordan Kahu was released to the Cowboys in February before three top-liners — Kodi Nikorima (Warriors), James Roberts and Jaydn Su’A (both Souths) — were shown the door in the space of six weeks.

Seibold insists it wasn’t his initial intention to shake-up Brisbane’s personnel.


“With the changes … some were led by the players and getting better opportunities,” he said.


“We had a tough start from a results perspective. I had to make some changes and some guys went back to reserve grade and some guys (Roberts and Su’A) asked to move on.


“Kodi had an opportunity to get a good deal for him and his family in a position he wanted to play.


“I saw Kodi being a 14 for us going forward and he wanted to play in the halves.


“With James (Roberts), he has a good relationship with Wayne Bennett (Souths coach), he is a Souths junior and it was a homecoming for him.


“He is playing first grade at the moment and he wasn’t at our club, so it has worked out best for all parties concerned.”

TL;DR - Peter Badel was really hanging out for League Life to do his job and they didn't come through for him.
