They don't need to make it look like they weren't talking. clubs and players are permitted to talk at any time regarding uncontracted years.
the media keep referring to November 1, because it allows them to keep up the clickbait.

So they can talk but not sign a contract? My understanding was they weren't allowed to talk about signing a contract either (although that would be impossible and nrl-level stupid to try to enforce). Couldn't they just as easily sign a contract of intent or something similar.

the NRL confirmed it years ago ... they can talk at any time, it has to be about uncontracted years (since clubs can't try to entice players to break contracts)

It’s true but they also don’t have a cap! NHL do it well, they hand out big fines if caught tampering.

I only defend the media within the boundaries set by the Gell-Mann Amnesia effect. Badel understands his subject matter better than the majority of journalists.
