Broncos Roster, Signings and Rumours Discussion 2022

Fullback is arguably the most important position on the field, and we have no idea who ours will be, and are just hoping a kid turns into a gun. We 100% need a legitimate fullback.

It’s not even the most important position in the spine.

With a good 9, 7 and 6 you can get away with a decent 1. Look at who’s currently the premiership winning fullback.

There’s no options at 6 on the market and we have the 7 already. What we need now is a good hooker. Someone that can provide consistently good service and can get the forwards rolling so they can create a good platform for the rest of the spine to work with.

Besides, what realistic options are there at fullback that’s on the market?

We're really only sorted for props and second rowers.

We can happily get by at lock, but wouldn't say no to someone with more ball playing skills. James and Capewell should bring the level heads we've been lacking. Haas and Flegler should continue to mature into our long term forward leaders. Riki, Piakura, Palasia, Robati, Willison, Carrigan and Hetherington: we're okay there, but we really don't know how okay.

Spine has only improved on last year with the addition of Reynolds. It's a massive improvement, but we can't fall to shit if he gets injured. Gamble and Kelly both demand consideration at 6: one for ticker, the other for skill. But neither are quite good enough to demand their place just yet. Turpin's motor is like nothing we've ever seen, and his attitude is impeccable. He's not a slug like Macca, but he hasn't been offering much in attack. That might improve with Reynolds calling the shots. Still, he should be polishing his CV. Even if it's to get his contract renewed.

Fullback is wide open. Herbie, Tesi, Jamayne, Selwyn. You can't go wrong. Or right. Tesi has it for now. Selwyn will get a run there at some point. You can bank that.

Centres. One is settled if Kotoni can stay fit, and Kevvie doesn't waste him at 6. Like fullback, the other is rented with other names like Lee, Arthars and even Capewell up for consideration. It's Herbie's to lose from round one.

Wings: Many critics are saying we're weak on the wings. In attack with the loss of Coates, and in defence for years. We'll see some heavy rotation out there if we continue to duff chances and let in tries. Farnworth will come under pressure if he can't form combinations out there, and might find himself shifted wider. One of the fullback candidates is likely to end up out there partnering Oates initially. Good luck working out which one, but it's unlikely they'll stay there. Watch this space.

Conclusion: the entire backline is still in turmoil, with only Reynold's leadership adding some stability.

Great post and I mostly agree, I was referring more to spine positions in my post your quoted though.

On your points though, most teams have a settled / strike guy along all lines and then interchangeable ones around them, I think we mostly have that as well except in the spine and as you say, wings.

For us, we have:

Fullback: NA
Wing: Oates at a stretch but really, NA
Centre: Staggs
Halves: Reynolds
Prop: Haas
Hooker: NA
Second-Row: Capewell
Lock: Hetherington at a stretch

I dont think Turpins motor is any better than Maccas tbh. Macca i'd argue in his peak years probably could play 80 mins more comfortably than Turpin. Cant really see a great deal difference in them as players tbh.
The only reason Macca could play 80 minutes is he dawdled around the field. He's a plodder. Everything he does with the ball is in slow motion.

Jake was recently judged Broncos MVP 2021 by the leading association of rugby league experts:

Sounds like Jakey boy to me. He's really no better than McCulloch. Macca for all his faults was incredibly fit and his work rate was easily as good, if not better than Turpin. Jake probably hits a little harder, but thats about it. He has regressed pretty badly in the last 12 months. Needs a big year. Its telling he had to activate his player option because i dont think he would have been retained if he didnt have one. His time living off not being Macca is well and truly over.

Those writers obviously dont watch the Broncos much. Laughable he beat Payne to that.

Sounds to me like you're a bit jealous of his good looks overshadowing your boy, Patty.

Ha ha. Patty is untouchable!

In all honesty, Jake just isnt a top hooker. Not that creative, no running game, just a hard hitting tackle bot. If we had a different option to rotate him with in the game we wouldnt notice so much. Still had to laugh when about a year ago somebody was telling us on here he would be competing with Grant for a QLD and Australia shirt.

Just looking at Macca and Turpin statistically, they are scarily similar in pretty much everything.

Macca had a stand out year in 2015 (before he started on his injury run), Turps hasn't had one of those yet.

Yep I got that one very wrong, he just doesn't suit the new style of game. He looked elite in the pre-covid slow ruck game. Up there with my prediction Warner would never play test cricket.

But seriously, any result from this year that does not result in Haas winning Broncos' MVP is absolute rubbish and should be discarded.

I still like him, but I think you have to use him like Redcliffe used to use him. He's much better suited to high impact spells rather than playing 80 mins.

Eh it happens, we've all made some shocking calls.
