Broncos Roster, Signings and Rumours Discussion 2023

I didn't mind him as a back up fullback, for all his problems still a better back up than most teams.

Will be a minor loss squad-wise if we don't replace him but I hope we are replacing him with middle forward(s). It is the one area I think we're lacking greatly, and is amplified by the hethrington and robati losses. Bayliss-brown sounds ok (haven't seen enough to say either way) but he automatically makes our top 22 every week at the moment due to our lack of middles. 1 or 2 injuries or poor form and he's a nearly bloody starting

Middle forward is probably our strongest depth? Hooker, halves, and 2nd row is our light spots..

Our strongest? Our top 17 are great then 1 or 2 after that are good as well but it falls off a cliff after that.
There are 5-6 middles needed in the side each week. Over the course of a year that means 10-12 will be needed. Name numbers 8-12 and tell me again how strong it is. And remember, number 8 is only 2 injuries/suspensions away. And the middle is where injury and suspensions happen.
We've lost james and Kennedy and replaced them with no one. They werent guns but very solid depth who could do their job (although to what levels is wodely debated). If haas is out with robati and hethrington for round 1 (strong possibilty), then we have a bench of jensen/paliasia (one will start) + willison (coming back from long term injury) and bayliss (24? Debutant in the nrl). I don't even know who would be after that, te kura? The 18 year old prop who got concussed in under 20s origin. Who else?

Could've been handy having a guy like Gamble still around to fill in.

Middles (roughly in order of current ability):

1. Carrigan
2. Haas
3. Flegler
4. Jensen
5. Hetherington
6. Palasia
7. Robati (pending)
8. Coburn
9. Willison
10. Riki (Piakura 2nd row)
11. Bayliss
12. Te Kura
13. Oluapu (lock)

3 props on train and trials

All of them would be good additions to the bench. It is Fairly well balanced depth. Any team who is requiring their 12th run prop is already in trouble but It depends on who is out, yeah if Patty, Haas, Hetherington, and Jensen are all injured then we are screwed but if Te Kura gets a start because Palasia, Robati, Willison, and Hetherington are injured he will do a good job off the bench.

Tesi Niu, sometimes great and at times brilliant, however he can't be trusted to catch bombs and make tackles, which is a big problem for any fullback.

Be interesting to see how they use him.

People are going to be in for a rude shock next season when Walsh is fullback...

If we were to use Niu's spot for a middle. I would like to see us give lachlan timm a shot. Just to play that 20-25min impact forward role to bend the line a little.

We’ve been playing blokes that should have been back in QCup for years!

Yep, not as worried about the middle, as I am about our 2nd row. I’d argue we are a genuine strike 2nd rower at least away from being a top side.

Capewell is fine, Riki is okay.

But after that?

Our second row are Capewell, Riki, Robati, and Piakura - it gets real slim pickings after that.

Capewell plays origin, Robati stood down, Riki injured or suspended and we’re watching Palasia let in 3 tries again.

All this talk about shit depth in the forwards and a need for spine players.... we're a future top 4 team for **** sake... we're going undefeated!!!

If Walsh hits the ground running, we can probably be one of those teams that can get away with an average dummy half, I know Penrith have Dylan Edwards as their fullback and he’s a solid first grader without being anything above average. I think teams can carry one player in their spine who would be considered a solid first grader so long as the other 3 players are quite creative.

Hopefully Piakura has that breakout year, he’s always been hyped up but is yet to deliver anything in the NRL. He hasn’t had many opportunities either but that is probably because they don’t think he’s up to it yet.

If we have TWO long term injuries or suspensions (we already have 2-3 potentially) we are either requiring a rookie or a 2nd rower to fill a spot on a week to week basis. We need 1 or 2 to pad it out, the middle is where more injuries and suspensions happen and requires 5-6 players every week.
2nd row isn't as good as I'd want it to be either (would like to have kept hosking for sure) but you have to remember they play 80 mins a game, and all of those named are capable of that).
Ideally would like 1 middle/edge guy and 1 pure middle. Inexperience in the middle is bloody dangerous defensively. Hello 2019 and 2020. Promote smoothy into the squad would give us enough options for hooker (thats 4 hookers ffs)

So 2 rookies at hooker playing in the middle is okay but a rookie playing 15 minutes of bench prop is dangerous?

We used 7 players in the halves last year - I would advise you don’t look at what our halves depth looks like after 3 this season. Willison or Coburn off the bench doesn’t worry me anywhere near as much as if Reynolds and Mam are out of action.

Why are 2 rookies playing at hooker? Do you not understand mathematics? We have 30 spots, we NEED 1 dummy half a week - 2 is desirable in our system but we can get by with 1.
That's 5% of our 17.

We need 5 middle forwards in our 17 each week (6 would be nice though).
That is 30% of our starting 17.

Are you suggesting we fill our top 30 squad with 5 dummy halfs (17% of the top 30) to ensure we don't need to use rookies?

You can't have QUALITY dummy half's sitting 3rd or 4th in line. Name ONE NRL TEAM that has that outside of the storm (who develop them anyway). They want to play nrl and there's only 1 or 2 options for it. I can name you about about 7 or 8 teams who have far, far better middle forward depth than us, and what a coincidence, a lot of them finished above us last year!it's a long season, injuries happen, a strong and reliable middle in defence is imperative. HELLO 2019 AND 2020!!!!!!
