Broncos Roster, Signings and Rumours Discussion 2023

He played the entire season at centre and was one of the better ones. He is as much a centre as second rower. He had a far superior 2022 to Staggs, no matter what happens when they played against each other. At least Talakai put together multiple good games.

When you're on the cusp of making the Origin side and your opposing number who just also happens to be your key rival for the position outplays you, that's sort of significant.

Kotoni's origin career is already over imo. He did nothing in that game he played and Talakai was about as effective in his game time.

I dont think it really matters if you outplay a rival for a rep shirt in one particular game. You get judged on what you do week in week out and how consistent you are. Staggs just hasnt been consistently good enough to warrant being in consideration for quite a while. Injury hasnt helped him, but he's become far too one dimensional. He's got the tools to add more to his game, its up to him to use them.

I bet we didn't try to match the Titans offer of 300k per season and hence he left. We let him go. Noone seriously thinks Broncos tried hard to keep him and lost out.

So we offered him a contract, but we let him go.

Yup. Worth offering him near minimum wage to stay just to see if he bites.. But really.. That's just another way of letting him go.

Hate to break it to you, but if we didnt want him why even offer him minimum wage ( which we didnt ). Are you trying to tell me we are playing games now with out of contract players we want to let go, who we dont need to make an offer to? Do you realise how utterly stupid what you are suggesting sounds?

We made him a good offer for a player of his ability ( a lot more than minimum wage ) but he turned it down and took a better offer. He's not somebody we are going to go overboard on, but its fairly clear we would have kept him if the price was right. A $100k a year pay increase is a lot of money for a player like Palasia.

Because he's a run of the mill fringe first grader? Like we can pick up another Palasia tomorrow if we need to. Look at Hosking last year?

Good on him for getting a decent contract though.

lol the “let them go” v “contract was up” argument comes up every 50 pages or so.

Personally, which side of the fence I sit on depends on which agenda I’m pushing ,

I just dont think as a club we are into bothering to waste our time and effort negotiating a contract with a player coming off contract who we are letting go anyway. If we start playing games like that it will hurt us long term with future contracts. I dont see any club offering a contract to a player they will let go.

I think its pretty clear with Palasia we wanted him to stay and we offered him a decent contract, but we weren't going to get into a bidding war with the Titans for him. Plenty of players around who we could give an opportunity to who could fill his spot for decent value.

Is it a meme to disagree with me while also agreeing with me? It's kinda funny I guess?

We could have kept Palasia if we wanted to. We let him go by not making a competitive offer.

There's no harm in offering an expendable player a low wage and seeing if they take it.

I'm just unsure what your overarching point is?

I think its we let Palasia go, but then he saw we offered him a contract, so now its we offered him a contract even though we were letting him go to see what happens.

Palasia left because he doesn't have Hass, Carrigan and Flegler sitting in front of him for starting spot at the titans.
If we didn't want him and let him go he'd be training on the Goldy this week because we would of approved his release to join them early.
He was made a offer and was/is wanted by the club but he took a better opportunity to be playing first grade every week down the road.

It's no different to retaining staff in any job. There's a maximum number you can afford to pay x employee based on what they bring to the business, your budget and other constraints.
If they take another job because that other place can for a range of reasons offer more money, that's not letting the employee go, that's the employee leaving what is your best offer to take up employement elsewhere, that's just business.

Letting go infers there's choice, Broncos have budget constraints, his demand exceeded what we could afford. Decision from then is up to him, it's not being wheelbarrowed out the door.
