Broncos Roster, Signings and Rumours Discussion 2023

Bringing Staggs off the bench for impact would kill a lot of birds, get all our stars on the field. Maybe not the best use of the cap, though.
Simplifying his role down to pure running and tackle busting sounds good to me. I really don't care if Staggs has an issue with not being named at centre. He can go find another club if he wants.

I was watching fairly closely, it became more of a go to without hesitation once Riki and Staggs proved to Reynolds they were liabilities. Reynolds tried giving Staggs lots of ball early in the season and realised Staggs couldn't get it to Cobbo.
I'll have to take your word for that. Staggs is a pretty damaging ball runner, and prolific scorer, when he's not running his winger over the sideline. He was being criticized for "not looking for the ball" whatever that means in practice when he's being cut out.

Herbie was also being cut out on the other side. I think it's just a half to wing move.

It's obviously a common move to throw cut outs and kick to the winger.. but I know Reynolds eventually found it the most effective move to cut out Riki and Staggs. Reynolds is a smart half and I was watching him be smart about having two disruptions between him and Cobbo. Obviously Reynolds wasn't going to come into the club and demand that Riki and Staggs be dropped. The coach should have fixed the issue before the end of the season. We really can't run with the same right edge again this year. This year we won't get any better results than last if we have the same line up. It's the same line up with less depth and experience.. I don't think Walsh is enough to change the entire side.

All these things to me have shown that Herbie needs to be our number 1 priority in the backs. He loves the club but more importantly, he actually wants to work hard and wants to win. That drive along with being an absolute gun who performs week in and week out makes him invaluable.

Hypothetically, if you had to lose a Selwyn or a Staggs to keep Herbie, you do it. Hopefully of course it doesn't come to that.

Some of the biggest things the greatest coaches/recruiters look for in athletes is how coachable they are, how they gel into a team and how they act when things go wrong.

Selwyn has none of these attributes. He isn’t coachable because of his poor attitude and anti-coach sentiment, he publicly talked shit about his team and disappears when things go wrong.

Walters might not be a great coach, but Cobbo isn’t a great sportsmen. He’s a natural athlete and that’s all going to fall apart the moment something goes wrong for him. This is not someone you go all in on re-signing and I do hope there are some consequences coming from this.

Which games were these? We must have been watching two very different things.
Not sure what games to pinpoint but I definitely didn't grab that opinion out of nowhere. What do you disagree on?

It was pretty easy to see the biggest negatives in our line up on (that right edge) and check on if there's been an improvement each week.

You never know, it could be as simple as switching Capewell to right side and Riki to left. Maybe Riki will run better lines for Mam. ( Similar to Luai and Kikau on the left for Panthers )

I'm not sure it is "pretty easy to see." I think we all can agree Kotoni's season started badly, went red hot before Origin and then petered out in a way none of us can satisfactorily explain. Selwyn's pretty much the same, though his peaks and troughs were higher and lower. Riki was roundly maligned for spilling balls and not offering enough in attack. But, in reality he was pretty solid, if unremarkable.

You won't find much evidence of any of this in the stats. It's all eye of the beholder. Riki's stats are pretty decent. Certainly compared to every other edge forward. Look for yourself.

Kotoni had 4 try assists to Herbie's 2, though that's from almost twice as many games. Herbie was just starting to hit his straps before he was injured racking up a blistering 10 tries in 12 games, a phenomenal improvement on last season's 3 tries from 20 games. Meanwhile Kotoni only scored 5, under par for him. But hardly abysmal.

It's ironic you're kind of accusing Kotoni of being a hog, and suggesting replacing him with Herbie, who's suffered the same criticism. Both, in my opinion, are excellent damaging defenders and are capable of ripping through defensive lines. Both have their ardent fans and detractors. They're both in my starting side.

What was the context? Was Herbie being a twat or was he “backchatting” a long the lines of “do you give up?” “Nah!”
Selwyn was wittering on about how hard the boot camp was and Herbie made it even harder by giving a bit of backchat, which got punished, and slowed them down. I'd have to go back and listen again to sit an exam on it. Feel free to listen to fact check me.

The way NSW handled him around Origin would've been deflating, he didn't really do anything wrong and got dropped for a second-rower who had one decent game against Morgan Harper in the centres
The second rower that played the entire season in the centres?

Kotoni is looking like a bit of a flat tracker himself as well as a one trick pony. Passing isnt great, doesnt go looking for work and if he cant use that big fend to overpower his opponent he was pretty much useless in 2022. Teams very quickly worked him out. Very big year for him in 2023, he needs to add more strings to his bow if he wants to kick on.
