Broncos Roster, Signings and Rumours Discussion 2023

I'll admit my confusion here.

I don't get how someone who follows the EPL, like you do thinks that EPL clubs can get away with picking and choosing who to release their contracted players to (with or without a reason) ... but we can't.

anyway, I suppose we'll have to agree to disagree. there is no way either of us will be proven right, because I don't see Karl, his manager or the Phins challenging us in court. I also don't see any club meeting out transfer fee demand, which also makes this argument a moot point. 🍻

Little different in the EPL really i guess because of the money involved. I'm sure if the Dolphins offered us $20 million for Oloapu we would sell him in a heartbeat which is what a lot of promising young players go for over there. The way players move around is just totally different. Generally, in the NRL, its off contract players that move, i cant think of many where a club has just bought a player for a fee because they want them. In football, clubs just identify and make offers for players under contract.

What about the worlds gift to RL, the knee-lifting jerk from the Roosters, previously Souths?

I dont see whats confusing but maybe its my explanation of my point.

If we say he can have a release, and as i said, this is me speaking purely from speaking to a person who deals with this sort of thing on a corporate level but i think the bacics of it would be the same, we need a valid reason to restrict him from signing with the Dolphins if we are willing to let him go. If he can sign with any other NRL club but the Dolphins then i gather we need to justify why or thats where a legal challenge could come into play. Just us saying we think he has been tapped up wont be enough. Considering we have release Niu and Lee to join them, i think we would struggle to have a valid reason unless we have something on them we dont know about.

As i keep saying though, easiest way for us to stop him going there is to just not release him at all to anyone. I couldnt care less where he goes tbh. If we are looking to improve culture here, i still believe we dont need players like him and Payne who will throw their toys out the pram when they cant get their own way. Let the Dogs or the Phins have a player who is going to act like a toddler when he cant get his own way.

Would probably stop the speculation if DD just put a statement out so at least we know where we stand as a club with this.
I better understand your view and it’s possible that is how it works. Though i don’t think it’s necessarily logical.

Geographic proximity is a fairly significant factor in non-compete clauses so the club could easily use that excuse and just say he’s also banned from the Titans. .

You make a decent argument that we have already done that twice so I’m not sure exactly how that would go but you could find a reason why it’s different for Karl - him being a halfback or suspected to have more marketing potential or something

You wouldnt ban him from the Titans. Thats where good players go to destroy their careers 😆 we should encourage that.

It’s a conditional release. We haven’t released him.

- He is contracted to us
- We haven’t released him
- We have said if we like the conditions we will consider releasing you

Can’t be any more simple.

yeah isnt this pretty much the same as the walsh situation?

he was contracted to warriors still and asked for release warriors said ok but they put stipulations on it and only spoke to one club and wouldn't even entertain taking offers from any other club. how is this really any different? if broncos dont want to release him to dolphins then that is there choice I dont see how nrl can interfere and say no you have to accept dolphins offer.

if they did that it would just open a whole new can of worms.

In saying that vlandys is that retarded I could see him doing something like that

I do have to wonder if they set 500k price tag is a bit of a PR stunt to say, "Look, we're prepared to compromise, you just pay us back for the money we spent developing him"

even proven quality NRL players don't generally cost a transfer fee of 500k

no we don't. all we have to do is reject the Phins offer. and if you want precedent, i have two word for you ... Gordon Tallis

Now, if we WANTED to give the Phins a reason for rejecting their offer it wouldn't be hard to come up with a legitimate one. e.g.
  • We don't like the way you have approached and attempted to entice some of contracted players to break their contracts with us
  • You're a cross town rival who we're competing for sponsorship dollars etc, we're not going to help you out

It was nothing like Tallis.

Tallis claimed he was promised a release to join Brisbane, Dragons say no we didn't, that was never promised- Tallis said he wouldn't play for them again because they were dishonest and sat out his last year of his contract.

Out of interest the Courier Mail has stated he refuses to train with the Broncos(which goes against his contract obligations) and has been training with Norths Devils. Any truth to that?

And reading it, **** me dead are we being painted as the absolute villians in this.

He trains with Norths, but that's who he is contrated too. He's not in the Broncos top 30 he's not on a development list because it never got to that stage yet.

So him not coming to NRL training isn't breaking rules. Broncos could add him to their top 30 than start punishing him for not coming to training.

It absolutely should be included on the cap and is yet another thing the nrl have allowed to sneak into the game through their inaction. It started with all these pommy player transfers. Not all clubs are created equal, which is why the cap exists. Why should a rich club be able to spend 500k outside the cap to sign a player over a poorer club who don’t have $500k to spend on a player transfer.

They've been paid for players under contract for a long time. Warriors paid Wigan 1.2 million for Tomkins in 2014.

Bath paid Souths 1 million for Burgess, Canberra paid Wigan for Bateman and Hodgson.

Manly paid Castleford for Mal Rielly in the 70's.

Broncos had to pay Jets $20000 to buy out his contract and transfer him to Brisbane.

Jet as in Jimmy the?

If so, that’s strange because I thought he was released due to the contact not being valid on account of a forged signature

Wow, Tomkins at the Warriors was already considered a massive failure and then you read this 😂😂

I was at the Qld possible vs probable game at Lang Park .
Laurie Spina out played Alf . But Alf got the nod .

What do you know about that ? 1 1910

It was Sydney Queenslanders v Brisbane Queenslanders.

NSW Maroons.

5. Benson
6. Currie
7. Spina
8. Lindner c
9. French
10. Gillmeister
11. Bella
12. Walters
13. Backo

14. Walters
15. Dwyer
16. Fullerton Smith
17. Tessman

Queensland Maroons

1. Scott

3. Grogan
4. Miles
5. King
6. Lewis c
7. Langer

9. Hohn
10. Smith

NSW Maroons won 20-10.

Alf played alright, probably out played by Spina but not disgraced. He threw a nice cut out pass past Wally so he wasn't lacking confidience.

They went on a two game tour of New Zealand before the Origin and Alf went better there.

That’s a lot of words when you could’ve just said “your agenda”
Still struggling to tell the difference between a "bias," an "agenda" and a plain old opinion. All I know is they involve too much thinking.
