Broncos Roster, Signings and Rumours Discussion 2023

People get too carried away by forwards making meters. Pangai Junior's best game for us against the Cowboys he made about 85 meters iirc. Quality, not quantity matters.
Menzies comes to mind.

Scored an absolute shitload of tries, but would have rarely made huge metres.

I like how Courier Mail are trying to make out the Dolphins handed us a blow for David Stagg going there.

It's hilarious.

He is a loss, he's great with that young age group of 15-17. He's found a real niche like Richards.

Coached City last year and was moving up at Norths- won't be long until he's Queensland Under 19 coach.

Surely an opportunity to work with and learn from one of the best coaches of all time is a logical move for Staggs.. If anything, it’s a move the Broncos should be encouraging..

I’ll put all the “doom and gloom” aside and give my ratings for this years ro - which I actually think is quite good due to persevering with the young guys who where originally blooded too early.

1. Walsh 7/10
Walsh has an extremely high ceiling when it comes to potential. He is probably the player that I’m least certain about when it comes to rating. His potential is up there with any player in the comp but he has had an up and down career so far. Consistency will be key for Walsh and finding the balance between backing himself and taking the smart play. May have underrated him due to my lack of faith in fullbacks over the last few seasons.

2. Oates 8/10
Big Cozza has had a resurgence. His attitude and performances have been great and should continue with Reynolds, Walsh, and Mam creating opportunities for him. Not the fastest winger and his defence can be hit or miss but was pretty damn good last year.

4. Herbert Farnworth 8.5/10
One of the best young backs in the comp on his day. Strong defender, huge output, and has big plays in him. Just needs to learn to set up his winger.

3. Staggs 7.5/10
Staggs has the potential to be the best back at the club if not the comp but while his one on one defence has improved his defending as part of the right edge unit needs work. His attack has also become 1 dimensional and he doesn’t have the work rate to make up for drops in attacking stats. When Cobbo and Staggs clicked for that period it was obvious how potent they could be.

5. Cobbo 8/10
Cobbo is another player in the Staggs and Walsh mould - the best in his position on his day an error riddled mess when he’s off. Hopefully he has come back bigger stronger and more consistent however there are some concerns regarding attitude. All he needs to do is return kicks with gusto, have a few scoots from hooker, and receive hand fed tries from Reynolds.

6. Mam 7.5/10
Mam is again similar to Walsh. The sky is the limit but sample size is too small to make a strong judgment. His toughness in defence and ability to time and weight passes perfectly are incredible for his age. Heaps of ability. Hopefully the experienced Reynolds and cocky Walsh will take a lot of pressure off of Mam and allow him to pick his moments.

7. Reynolds 9.5/10
Not much needs to be said. Hopefully can stay on the field more this season because we do not have the halves depth of last season. Will hopefully click with his spine in attack and edge in defence.

8. Flegler 8/10
Flegler is getting better every game. Although I personally think he provides more balance to the team coming off the bench with Jenson starting. He’s big, aggressive and skillful. Needs to avoid suspension and sin bins.

9. Billiam Walters 5/10
Does a job and can’t fault his efforts. Will hopefully improve with a full preseason at hooker. A journeyman utility bench hooker who has become the starting 9 due to circumstances. Currently our weakest position.

10. Haas 9.5/10
One of the best in the comp regardless of how you feel about him as a person. Mr Consistent. Would like to see him work toward quick play the balls rather than forcing a few extra metres. With the quality of the pack, he shouldn’t need to play more than 60 minutes once Hetherington returns

11. Capewell 7.5/10
Capewell is a cool head with experience and utility value. He’s never going to be a Fifita or Kikau type back rower and his biggest value occurs off the field. His main focus should be helping Mam develop in defence.

12. Riki 6/10
All the athleticism you could want in an edge forward but struggled to capitalise on it due to a fairly poor understanding of the game. Will need to step up this season to remain in the broncos long term plans. Personally think he would be a better bench middle forward.

13. Patty 9/10
Everything you could want in a man…I mean player. His improvements in ball playing have been nothing short of impressive and he has won over a lot of us who thought he had no business at lock. Hopefully continues to build on last year.

14. Paix 6.5/10
Good utility hooker option but needs to improve defence

15. Jensen 7/10
Reliable work horse. Extremely valuable

16. Taupau 6/10
Will be good value for his experience and aggression. Plenty of flaws in his game but overall a good pick up.

17. Palasia 6/10
Bench depth. Does a job at prop. Terrible on an edge.

Coach: Kev 6/10
Good bloke but not a good coach. Doesn’t need to be amazing to experience success with the team. Anything short of finals is an abject failure.

Depth: 5/10
We are fortunate to have starting players with decent utility value that can cover for other positions but our actual depth is far below last season. Any massive injury toll could be a real problem.

All of the above gives a total average of about 7.25/10 which I feel is fairly accurate if you consider Penrith last year a 9.5 and south’s an 8 and the rest of the top teams somewhere in between

Appreciate the post but i wish you did my performance ratings!

You think I’ve over rated?
Personally yes, but doesnt mean you are not correct...probably more me being jaded by years of poor results. I guess depends on how you rate them as well, i tend to compare them to other teams options. a few examples...

I'd have 8 or 9 other team fullbacks ahead of Walsh so my rating would be more 5/5,5 out of 10.

I still don't see Cobbo as an 8 and the comment of being best in his position on his day i also disagree with. Someone like Reuben Garrick has had better games than Cobbo but would not be considered best in his position. I accept i am probably a lone minority on this site for Cobbo but i think he is currently overrated and more like 6 out of 10

9.5 out of 10 for Reynolds signals he is a whisker behind a Cleary, i'd have him 8 at most behind Cleary/DCE/Hynes/Hughes/Hunt/Moses and even Townsend had a better season. Love the guy...but 9.5 out of 10?

I'm not sure about the must make finals or it's an abject failure, whilst also claiming we have horrible depth.

We used 33 players last year, Penrith used 32... you need strong depth in your squad to ensure success.

If we can stay injury free for the year then our starting 17 is good enough to make finals... but we've already lost Kobe for half a year, Reynolds is held together by sticky tape and we had a walking wounded for the back half of the year with half the starters pushing through injuries to play.

Our next hooker in the top 30 is 19, coming off shoulder surgery and has played less than 5 games against men.

Middle depth is kids after Palasia... and we have basically nothing in edge forward depth.

Outside backs is about the only area we actually have cover for, but that's an area where you shouldn't want a whole lot of rotation in order to keep it fresh.

If we're getting any sort of injuries across the side then we'll be relying on kids to come in and play as NRL regulars from the get go

It’s a list and ratings, Sprojy’s dream post. I think you’ve overrated some but a lot of them are hard to do as you’ve acknowledged because of their age. I feel like our squad is a bit unbalanced again as overall, they are too young and if Palasia is still in our best 17 as an edge back rower , which he likely is, we are in trouble.

I also find it hard to rate the coaching staff. Before the horrible fade out last season, I would have had them as safe and on an upward trajectory. After the fade out, I have no idea. Reports out of preseason though are that the squad is really happy and improving, so good signs but let’s see.

Our depth in the forwards this year is an issue, it seems to all be kids.

Our problem is that a big portion of our team - guys like Cobbo, Staggs, Walsh, Riki, Flegler can all be 9.5 or can also all be 3.5 on any given day.... We have a team with alot of potential, but not alot of consistency. That's where coaching comes in. If Kev can't get alot of these guys to take that step into being consistently good (even if that means being a consistent 8 and sacrificing the odd 9.5 game) then we need to look elsewhere.

We used 33 players last year, Penrith used 32... you need strong depth in your squad to ensure success.
Good point, although worth pointing out that Penrith had used 27 players prior to the final round of the competition that they effectively tanked. That's still a healthy number, but well below the 32 mark figure and it paints a fairer reflection of what kind of strain a team can go through and still be successful.

It seems to be a trend that's come into the game these past few years. I remember the Broncos had used 28 players after six rounds in the competition which is absurd. However by the end of the season, both Canberra and Melbourne had used the same amount of players because they treated the final round as a bye.

It still surprises neutral fans that Brisbane had a horrific injury toll that year.

You think I’ve over rated?
I think you underrated our depth. At least in the backs. I maintain when you include our depth we have the strongest backline in the competition. Unfortunately I can't say the same of our halves and hooker, and I'm unsure about our forward depth. Maybe we'll have a better idea after this trial.

If I had to single out one player I'm most looking forward to seeing more of it's Jock Madden.
