Broncos Roster, Signings and Rumours Discussion 2023

To be honest, I think his position is quite safe. His speed, which, let's be honest, is the only reason they signed him, is going to be with him for a good few years. Unless one of those others proves that their defence or exit metres outweighs Coates' speed benefits, I don't see him being dropped. He has basically the same +/- as Addo Carr, both are super fast, but easily manhandled on exit sets and famously clueless in defence. That was good enough for the Storm.
Addo Carrs speed helped him in defence at the storm. Coates isn't that smart however

As it stands, looking at 23 v 24, and bear in mind there will no doubt be significant changes to our roster for 24 with no doubt one decent player from somewhere coming in but thoughts?

1. Walsh / Walsh
2. Oates / Oates
3. Staggs / Staggs
4. Farnworth / Cobbo
5. Cobbo / Mariner
6. Mam / Mam
7. Reynolds / Reynolds likely transitioning into Madden
8. Haas / Haas
9. Walters / Paix
10. Flegler / Carrigan
11. Capewell / Capewell
12. Riki / Riki
13. Carrigan / Hetherington

14. Paix / Mozer
15. Taupau / Willison or Bayliss-Brow or even maybe Taupau
16. Jensen / Jensen
17. Piakura / Piakura

I reckon Robati being a moron has really dented our succession planning in the forwards, he would have been a mainstay for sure.
I am eager to see how Shalom & Brendan Frei develop this year. I hope both of them compete real hard for a place in 17 next year. I really liked Shalom from the trails.

Agree on Robati. He’s the perfect example for the saying “footy players do not have brains”. Had he acted bit more responsibly, he would’ve challenged Riki’s place easily this year.

Oh wow, Broncs fans going to lose their shit if the Fox story is true. Broncs went to his father when he was young but dad didn’t tell him. Said he would have signed in a heartbeat…

Yeah, I have told that story before, Bunn and Grant's dad are best mates- Bunn was always going to get his man he promised he'd sign him to whichever club he was at.

Yeah so hardly the Broncs fault here even though no doubt it will be made out to be. They spoke to the parents as they should.

Highlight reel not good enough?

Yeh for some reason this doesn't make it

Nope, nor is his 20 tries last year ... or his 2nd most tries in Broncos history.

He's an imposter

/sarcasm
I'm sure in any team the left winger is usually scoring the bulk of their tries and all of the hard work is done by the inside men

Top liners:

Corey Norman - Eels - paid overs - fairly successful but the team had more success when they moved on from him
Ash Taylor - Titans - MASSIVE overs - his failure was epic
Jai Arrow - Titans - Paid on potential which was overs at the time, we didn't compete hard knowing Patty was coming through - has had one of the better careers and has reached his potential
Ben Hunt - Dragons - paid unprecendented overs - hasn't had team success and ultimately hasn't had the impact his contract would require, but has undoubtedly been elite.
David Fifita - Titans - One of the worst overpayments of all time - paid not just on potential, but out of desperation to finally land a top-level Broncos talent - resulted in exactly what was expected, unmotivated player, surrounded by a squad suffering from an unbalanced cap.
Xavier Coates - Storm - Premiership Potential - despite the Storm's suggestion they will develop him in to a premier all-rounded player, they have yet to ask him to do anything other than fall over the line. His defensive reads, which were his problem here, do not seem to have improved at all.
Herbie Farnworth - Dolphins - Overs - results yet to be seen, but of all the players who have left, he will be tough to beat in the always-gives-110% stakes.
Thomas Flegler - Dolphins - Considerable overs - if the refs suddenly take the blowtorch off his game (which is entirely possible) he could end up a top-level prop.

Support players:

Ben Hannant - Cowboys - Broncos under-offered - premiership
Jarrod Wallace - Titans - Overs. Not the worst loss but he was starting to hit form, Titans paid on potential - plodder
Herman Ese'Ese: Knights - Overs. Like Wallace, was doing a job for their modest salary, but was offered starting prop money to leave - has not shown to be worth his pay grade.
Joe Ofahengaue - Tigers - Overs. Whether we wanted to keep him is debateable. Was looking strong with his Origin appearance but was injured and never the same - definitely did not live up to his pay packet.

You could argue some more in McGuire, Su'a, TPJ, etc, but at the time the players were arguably seen as surplus, or replaceable by younger players coming through who worth the opportunity.

I'd like to put in my 2 cents in on these if I could, if only to distract myself from the anxiety over a very sick Doggo.

Top liners:

Corey Norman - Eels - Overs - Utter failure of a player both on field and off. Neither the Eels or Drags got any more worth out of him than we did which was piss poor. Club was better off with his departure.
Ash Taylor - Titans - MASSIVE overs - his failure was indeed epic, although you have to wonder how much of that was to do with him or the Tits throwing him into the deep end at a club that has been struggling since inception.
Jai Arrow - Titans - Paid on potential (and that can never be overs imo) - He's turned into a decent enough player but ultimately falls into the same sort of category as Flegler: Not that big of a deal that he walked and we ended up with better.
Ben Hunt - Dragons - Crazy overs (at the time) - Has carried the Dragons on his back ever since he rocked up. They haven't benefited as a unit much with his inclusion but without him they're pretty much spooners. I think we will see the "overs" become an appropriate price tag this season after his heroics in Origin cleansed his soul.
David Fifita - Titans - Obscene overs - Was a panic signing through and through. The Tits at the time had nothing to hang their hat on, were looking like a basket case after the epic fail of the Ash Taylor experiment, and FIfita has demonstrated his lack of commitment pretty comprehensively ever since. Not getting the peeps around here now begging to bring him back. Why?
Xavier Coates - Storm - Probably unders by the Storm's standards - Meh, hasn't achieved shit since he left despite scoring tries galore, but when you have the Storm spine feeding you quality ball, my mother could score tries like that.
Herbie Farnworth - Dolphins - Overs? - To be concluded, but you can't help but think he will be a standout in a team full of spuds.
Thomas Flegler - Dolphins - Overs - Watch this space. The refs will absolutely give him a break now that he's playing for the golden boys, his game will go to another level and all of a sudden it's BRONCOS CRISIS.

Support players:

Ben Hannant - Cowboys - Broncos under-offered - premiership. Can't help but feel like this was a Petero 2.0 situation.
Jarrod Wallace - Titans - Overs. Another Meh. Hasn't achieved shit and is known for his brain fades ala Flegler.
Herman Ese'Ese: Knights - Overs. was a mediocre prop even when he was still with us. Not much has changed.
Joe Ofahengaue - Tigers - Overs. When you're struggling to make the 17 in this modern Tigpies side, well that says it all really. Was always a hot and cold player but seems to be all cold nowadays.

David Fifita - Not getting the peeps around here now begging to bring him back. Why?

Because he's still a very good player bogged down in a shit side that he clearly doesn't have much passion for. We also currently have Riki as our first choice 2rf who poses zero threat close to the line. Imagine him in our team with Walsh, Arey, Staggs (if you play fifi on the right), Mam etc: there are just far more attacking threats to draw defenders off him at the Broncos. At the titans the opposition don't really have to fear any other player when the ball is near Fifi.

I dno if this is cope, but it also seems to me like he was prepared to turn down serious overs from the titans, who were bidding against themselves, to stay at the Broncos. It came down to the most ridiculous offer in RL history for him to leave.

Joe Ofahengaue -
your dog alright mate?

On Coates I think he's going to be battling for a Wing spot at the storm this season. Warbrick, Anderson and Nick Meaney (when he's not filling in for papahuzen) might leap frog him this season.
Interesting point, I cant see him getting dropped. He gets picked routinely for QLD even though hes about half as good as Corey Oates..

1 in 10 are left footers / left handers .

Then you have Dane Gagai and Cobbo who are natural lefties but are played on the right .

Maybe its time we looked at what we have and recruited accordingly. Plenty of left sided players around. You dont have to left footed or left handed to be effective on that side of the field.

Sorry, are you on crack?

Bayliss Brown will cover flegler? Bayliss Brown is bog average in QCup!

Get rid of oates? Our leading try scorer (second in the entire comp), finally improved his hands and the one player in our back 5 that makes good metres every game (which we need because walsh and staggs aren't known for this, and herbie is gone).

Put down the pipe mate.

You couldnt make it up. Arguably our best and most consistent player in 2022 and some clown wants to punt him. Probably for some Queensland cup random winger who has a good YouTube highlight reel.

Agree about Bayliss Brow. He will do a reasonable job for the odd game, but i'll be astounded if he forces his way into this side at this point in time. He will have to kick on a lot for that to happen and i dont see it in him just yet.

Probably punt Oates for Rhyse Martin.

Harry Grant publicly saying he loves the Broncos and would have signed in a heartbeat as a kid , but dad didn’t tell him about the offer…

odd timing, wouldn’t be happy hearing that if I was a Storm supporter
