Broncos Roster, Signings and Rumours Discussion 2026

Nah, work him until his body is broken & when we make the GF, don't pick him. And when we win, don't buy him a ring. 😂🤣
I mean going forward after haas leaves, we don’t have to try & find a replacement for his work rate with only one player, the bench change gives us flexibility depending on how the games going.

Our management seems to have it mostly together, you'd assume they are professional and as such would have had a hitlist for both retention and targets ready to go if this eventuality occurred. As has been mentioned, Haas has been looking out the door it seems since he got there 10 years ago.

Today, I am less convinced we can replace Haas. I think Haas is more critical to our pack than I first thought. We lose some intimidation factor without Haas and his consistency of performance does cover up some of the issues we have with our variety in rucking it out. We do rely a lot on his one out hit ups to make metres.

Sure, we have a lot of cash if Payne goes but we probably need a few players to cover what he brought.

Carrigan is great at Lock/Prop.
Willison is developing nicely but has a history of injuries
Piakura is good but has injury/concussion issues.
Ricki did well at the end of last year but has not always lived up to his price tag.
The others are all cheap and cheerful contributors offering great value but are not forward leaders and I feel less effective without Haas.
Not sure who we have coming through that may step up.

The top tier props in the league seem to be locked up and are not going to want much less than Payne. I think the gap between his performance and salary they want will be smaller than we think. We will also be competing with bears and PNG at inflated prices.

Who knows what may happen during the 10 day cooling off period. Maybe we come back with a bigger one year offer that he takes? That may be easier than finding replacements before 2028. However, Payne may have decided to go regardless and its set in stone.

We’ve extended players past nov1 before, seems to be getting more common.
I think Managers are more likely to wait and consider all offers these days then commit before Nov 1. Particularly with Bears and PNG lurking. I think clubs can try to do it before but players who are sought after will choose to wait before negotiating.

I hope so. Maybe they decided if Payne goes we will hold out on a big replacement until 2028. There does not seem to be much around for 2027

Also, if you offer someone 3 years, and their counter is 1 year and you begin negotiating on a 1 year extension, there's gotta be a part of you that starts thinking of alternatives and starting those conversations, even if you do want to keep Haas on the 1 year deal.

We can't replace Haas. He's the best prop in the world. For the next couple of years at least, any team that doesn't have Payne Haas in it is missing out.

The good news is a starting middle pack of Jensen, Willison and Carrigan is still elite. I'd want us to find a prop who'll be good enough to start over Corey or X, but if we don't I'm not panicking. Of course if Te Kura has a corker this year we can just buy a QCup workhorse or upgrade a young guy like Allen.

I don't him here.

Don't want us increasing a thing.

The circus has moved on.

The great thing about this team is we don’t seem to miss anyone.

Scratch that: we don’t win without Reece.

Is Haas like, REALLY aloof? Like he's close to Patty but that's about it?

My gut feeling is he's won his title, he's satisfied in that regard, but now he's been put through Madge's grueling pre-season again and has had enough. The desire isn't there anymore.

In previous years, the yardage loss would really concern me, but the metres mariner, staggs, shiba and karapani were making at the end of the year were really good. And even in the gf, willison and kobe made more metres than hass.

Dont get me wrong, hass is the best prop in the game, he is irreplaceable and we will miss him. However we can mitigate the loss with appropriate fill ins and adjusting our strategy.

I always felt it was coming, i was just hoping it would be to rugby.
