Grant, papenhuyzen, hughes, brandon smith etc. would have a fair few under their belt too i imagine.

I think this is because these type of players realise the development system and appenticeships they serve under senior players (smith, slater, cronk, bronmwich etc.) will in turn make them better players in the long run. Since the loss of locky, parker, gillet and hodges we dont have senior players who would be able to provide a good education to players coming through and the more senior players we have are not high quality or demonstrate a good knowledge of the game.

I also wonder whether having more feeder clubs actually is a negative thing as it affects the capacity to develop combinations of players coming through. Melbourne has two and the bulk of players seem to come through at intervals, in smith and cronk era i think they were the tigers, now a lot of the newer players coming to first grade are coming from the falcons.

The Broncos may do well identifying junior talent but in terms of nurturing that talent and developing them from junior grades into nrl players, seems to have progressively deteriorated.

It isn’t hard to identify gun kids if you are always picking the biggest, fastest and strongest kid as a 12 year old. Anyone can do that.

The problem is identifying the kids that are going to become actual guns when everyone is fully developed. You also need to look, for character, resilience, competitiveness and drive.

If you don’t look for those non-tangibles, you end up with the Milfords, Joffas, Oateses, TPJs of the world who are all physically gifted but have massive flaws that prevent them from ever really making it, whether it be laziness, stupidity or sookiness.

Exactly, this is why i think that suuali kid from souths is going to be a flop. He already has a massive ego and all his highlights are against kids half his size. He will be in for a rude awakening when he plays against men.

Bummer. I doubt he will be coming cheap but then again, it is the Mole, so he would just be rehashing what he has seen here.

Where is that signing (who was still involved in the finals at that stage) you talked about a few weeks back fella? Still happenning? Getting a bit antsy here :)
