Bulldogs boss Todd Greenberg recruited to help run NRL

Totally agree. Greenberg is a massive dick kisser.

This boys club upper management bull**** in league is the thing that is holding the place back. If he does leave, the game will suffer for it.

If the boys club aren't removed League will die.

I can't see it dying for a long time. It's hugely popular in QLD and NSW, and SoO is arguably the biggest yearly sporting event in Australia. The management might not take it to new highs, but it won't die IMO.

Agree. League won't "die". It'll always be around. But I do agree that it's continuing to be held back by the same failings it's always had - and ironically State of Origin is a symptom of it. The game is insular. It's so protective of its history as a NSW-QLD game that any expansion is half arsed. Any break away from the control of QRL and NSWRL is token only.

While club bosses and NRL/ARLC management might talk glowingly about the "product" and how we need to "take it to the masses" and "expand our reach" during their annual talkfests, when it comes down to action the old "how will this benefit ME, and MY CLUB and MY STATE" mentality kicks in. And all it takes is a couple of the big clubs in Sydney (or even the Broncos) to say "no, we don't like that idea" and suddenly the NRL backs away and gives it up.

So when I say State of Origin is a symptom of this mentality, it's that there's an attitude that while State of Origin continues to sell out, attract huge TV ratings etc, then obviously the game is going well. There's no real thought to how to expand it nationally or internationally. None at all.

I don't know how they do it, but the AFL seems to have a near perfect blend of "This is the way the game has to move forward" as well as respecting the history of its oldest and dearest clubs. I both admire and despise them.

They also realise internationally they're never going to be more than a curiosity, but they play up to that. Look at their advertising.

League doesn't do that. It tries to make itself out to be everyone's game, the greatest game of all, everyone wants it - yet still get stuck in the mud of NSW-QLD being the "home" of the game. It's almost schizophrenic.

I knew Greenberg would get into NRL management, will be interesting to see how he goes.

Interesting to see Smith appointing a massive field of middle managers, some overlapping - where does commercial manager start and finance manager end? What about "head of football" and operations manager?

Wasn't Smith appointed for his financial and business savvy? WTF is he going to be doing?

Dilute responsibility - dilute accountability.

Great ass covering Smithy.

Plenty going on at the moment. Shep resign this week from the Pride and the commission love him. He will have a job within two weeks. Jim Doyle has been meeting with ISC clubs this week to figure out the role of supporting competitions.

I'm personally astounded that none of these positions existed before. I highly doubt that any corporation of a comparable size doesn't have such structures in place.

This exactly.

I heard when he took up the position, he couldn't believe how disorganised the NRL was. Glad he's overhauling it all, because compared to other sports in Australia, the NRL always seems to lag behind in how they go about things.

I'm quite happy with the way Smith has gone about things.

His business management credentials are second to none (so they say) but his understanding of Rugby League is very limited....hence the recruitment of Greenberg.

I think we're on the right path here people.

Exactly, the primary job of a CEO, is to surround himself with experts to get the job done. He seems to be going about it the right way.

Exactly. CEO should be leveraging off the talent of managers below him. he should be about forming relationships with other codes, businesses, government. effectively a figurehead

A good CEO is one who hires superb talent to work besides him.

and why should there be?

It's a game between QLD & NSW......

It's origins and meaning have nothing to do with any other Australian state or any other nationality.

Expand the NRL if you want to expand something.

Pretty sure Coxy was talking about the game, and people are blind to it due to Origin's success...
