Huddersfield Giants recruit Todd Carney has been refused visa clearance by UK authorities, effectively barring him from taking part in the European Super League in 2009.

In a prepared media release, Giants Managing Director Richard Thewlis made the announcement overnight, stating that Carney's application had been rejected.

“It is clearly a disappointment for Todd as he was looking forward to playing in Super League." Thewlis said.

"His circumstances are well documented and we felt that on balance he would be unlikely not to be granted a visa however despite our best efforts his application has been rejected.

"We must now abide by the ruling and move forward accordingly.â€Â

It's understood Carney's chequered history in Australia - which includes drink driving offences - were part of the reason why the former Canberra Raiders halfback was denied entry into Britain.

The news places Carney in rugby league exile with the NRL yesterday standing by it's decision to ban the 22-year-old from playing.

The NRL did not officially deregistered Carney when the Raiders sacked him for off-field offences last August. The NRL however, have stated that it will refuse any applications for registration before 2010.

what a pity [icon_lol1.

He'll end up in France I bet.

Sucked in, Todd. You did the crime and now you're doing the time.

Even if he gets a gig in France he won't be able to play away in England I assume...

They push him through some how, if Mike Tyson can travel over seas I'm sure carney will get in somehow...

Doesn't leave him with much of a bargining position.

They should offer him $500,000 a season.

In monopoly money.

Should be a good lesson for current nrl player, you can't **** around then just go to another club or just overseas.
I'm happy for once a footy player is actually suffereing for his decisions not simply walking in to a new clubl the next day.

Well said icon_thumbs_u

Agree broncospwn.

However you'd think the club/player would find out one way or the other if they would get their visa before signing contracts. Idiots the lot of them.

Best young half in the game, would love to see him allowed to play again this year...we all would be ripped off if he didn't get a go. At worst i now hope he stays in the NRL now...for many years.

How many young people make much bigger errors of judgement than Todd? yet they are still allowed to earn a living...get off his back and remember we are dealing with an immature young person who is gonna make mistakes...have a look at the volunteer work he has done since his error and you'll see Todd Carney is actually a pretty decent young bloke. I'd suggest if he was a Broncos player your opinions would all be very different, you lot have just grabbed a hold of the media beat-up on Todd and run with it...well done guys!!! perfect example of how the media gets it's power.

Oh FFS.

Repeat argument re: other ways of earning a living other than football, football being a privileged profession played by many who can behave themselves and stay off the drink etc etc.

Carney's a shitstain and not missed.

I used to think Todd Carney was just a typical, been handed everything on a silver platter type of kid who pissed it (literally) up against a wall. However a couple of months ago after the raiders got rid of him there was a very insightful story on him in one of the papers. The stuff he has gone through, whilst not an excuse to behave the way he has, certainly helped me understand a little bit better why he has done so many stupid things. Sure, many people have tough lives and don't carry on the way he does, but it certainly has to be considered as part of the reason. People handle things differently - some soldier on and become tougher, some don't handle it at all and fall to pieces. I don't think anyone can judge someone for the particular way in which they handle their own lives experiences.

Yes, on one hand it's great that the NRL took a tough stance and that he wasn't allowed to keep getting away with things. But as SSS said, heaps of people do far more stupid things. I realise it's slightly different, he's a role model blah blah blah, but at the end of the day far worse things are done and to be refused a visa based on drink driving offences is a bit much imo.

Emma, seriously, he would be rejected from going anywhere near the USA for the same reason. You reap what you sew.

I don't just have these expectations for footballers. I had a team member at my company last year who inevitably showed up on Monday late and hungover, if they showed up on Monday at all. Their work was quite shoddy too, nothing that couldn't have been improved with some training and diligence.

I wasn't going to waste my time on someone who had that little respect for the job that they would show up completely wasted or not show up at all due to their drug and alcohol fetishes. Chose not to renew his contract.

He struggled to find another job and I didn't recommend him to anybody, and thankfully I was never called on as a referee because I would have been honest.

You reap what you sew.

I know that Coxy, but people get visas when they've done far worse things than Carney has done is all I'm saying. Didn't we allow Snoop Dogg into the country a while back even though he has weapons charges to his name in the past?

I don't feel sorry for Carney per se, because those were the choices he made, but I'm simply saying that the article gave me a better understanding of perhaps why he is the way he is. Not saying it's an excuse, but as I said, I'm not going to judge how someone reacts to particular circumstances in their lives.

But we forbid Fiddy Cent for similar crimes to Snoop Dogg. And besides which, that's Australian immigration, not UK immigration, who are a fair bit more picky than we are. And US are worse again.

And I actually think you can judge a person by how they react to circumstances and pressure. And especially how they bounce back from setbacks.

So far Carney seems to be taking the "woe is me, the world is cruel" mentality. Which is just childish.

Maybe he can take up a job with the ACTU, they specialise in that mentality........

I know that's our immigration department, I get that. I just still think it's harsh that one country allows you in despite doing god knows what, and another one doesn't because of drink driving. I don't see how he's taking the woe is me line - if that was the case the stories about his family would have come out a long time ago.

My point is that I, personally, am not going to judge his reaction to those circumstances. I don't know how I would react in the same situation. I'd like to think I'd react well, but no one ever truly knows until they go through it, do they?
