Edge backrows are a specialist position that are more concerned about protecting their halves and running lines off of them. For instance, Luke Lewis only averages 8 runs a game for the Sharks, but that doesn't make him any less effective. On the other hand, Bukuya's role in the team is to gain metres through the middle with his foot-work. That generally works well when he's making metres off the back of big runs from his Cronulla team-mates. In Origin, it's a different story and what the team requires is different.

Which isn't necessarily to say Hess is the right option either, but just how comparing backrows can be apples and oranges.

One thing I will say is that I don't buy into this too old or too young rhetoric. If they're the best candidate pick them, it's as simple as that. Obviously it isn't the real reason, so point out the deficiencies you think they have. Whether you feel they have too many defensive flaws or mistakes in their game, or there's simply better candidates. Ageism is a massive cop out, it's like criticizing a player because they're 'overrated'.

Being picked when they were ruined Meyers and Webb. Short term it was great but I think long term it was no good for them. Carlaw to a less extent too.

Meyers never played for Queensland or Australia again.

Webb floated about played the next year then didn't play again till 2005 and wasn't even playing consistent first grade between 01 and leaving the Broncos. Only played one whole series again his whole career.

I am not blaming their early selection but you can wonder how much it impacted on them. Maybe they would have done the exact same thing if they didn't play early. I think it impacted.

I'm more concerned with the performances they put forward when their name was called.

It didn't always turn out well, Bowen would have been an easier target, but the point was his selection wouldn't have been unheard of.

It isn't like they're picking some 18 year old the coach doesn't even recognise.

I dont know that it was being picked young that impacted meyers career. From memory he had a series of heavy head knocks after his Australia debut. His confidence was shattered fir a long time after that and he never reached those playing hights again.
As an outside observer Carl webb was just super talented and super ill disciplined. ..id dare say that was his down fall more than any notion of plsying rep footy too early. Clearly he was ready or he wouldn't have kept making qld teams for a number of years after wards.
