Corey Oates Signs New Deal

Try-scoring ace Corey Oates has re-signed with the Brisbane Broncos.

The powerful 25-year-old winger has committed to the end of the 2020 season, with options for 2021 and 2022 also in place.

Oates has scored 91 tries in 142 NRL games for the Broncos, including 13 in 2019 when he reclaimed his place in the Queensland team for all three games of the Origin series.

Biloela-born Oates said he was happy to be staying at the club where he made his debut in 2013, and he was working hard on preparations for 2020.

“It’s good to have things sorted. The Broncos have been great for the last 8 years or so and it’s always hard to leave somewhere – the last thing I want to do is pack up and have to start again,” said Oates.

“I started last season really strong and it would be good to have that form the whole year – that’s on myself, I can fix that.

“You have to manage it all and have a strong preseason, and my focus will be on getting all the little things right.”

Broncos coach Anthony Seibold said: “We are really happy to retain Oatsey – he is a representative-quality player in the prime of his career, and we are looking forward to big 2020 season ”

Corey Oates has re-signed... just got the member mail from the club

That's via the broncos email to by the way

Well there is one, more to come I suspect.

Now just to crank up the corey hotline to ring everybody up to tell them this

I'm not a fan of all thes 'options' contracts we are doing, and how little information is provided by them. In recent times, they have all been contracts in the players favour, and they usually come back to bite us.

Incredibly vexed about this one. Of course I'm happy that Corey is sticking around, but he was also surplus to our needs.

The hell is with these player options? I'd rather just sign him for 2/3 years outright.

EDIT: If they're used to entice him to stay I'd just tell him cya later. We have other priorities. Happy that he's in the team going forward, but his handling was shit house at times this year.

The player options are a joke, the publicised ones that we have are Boyd, Gillett and Macca all having these player options and all 3 of them are fucking us. I think Bird has a player option too for 2021, which will likely also **** us. This is ridiculous.

Does it have anything to do with TPAs?

No idea. If there's a legit reason for them for players like Oates, who is young and we can afford to lose if he wants to leave, then whatever. But for old blokes like Macca and Boyd it's bitten us on the ass. Fifita should be getting a 5 year deal with no PO, same deal with Haas when he's off contract.

you realise that player options are not uncommon in the NRL ... most clubs utilise them in contract negotiations ... including the Storm

I don't really care about the player options.

If Oates signs for 3 years without the options and stinks it up, we suffer anyway.

Player options are pretty irrelevant in the NRL. It's not like in leagues such as the NBA where contracts actually mean something.

In the NRL you can sign a player on a 3 year deal and then part ways after 1, it happens with or without the player options, look at Ryan Matterson for example.

Just to give you guys an idea of how long this negotiation shit takes, Hooper said on 360 the Monday after Parramatta smashed us that the deal with Oates was "very far along, probably too far along to be pulled back." The deal was nearing completion then, and that was in September. It took the club and Corey's management over a month just to dot I's and cross T's.

So if we only started pursuing someone like Croft with any urgency on the same day, we're in for a hell of a wait yet before we hear anything. Contract negotiations are slow, tedious, meticulous and frustrating, especially for fans who are coming off probably the most humiliating defeat ever.

Patience.
