Corey Parker announces retirement

Typical Bennett really, forcing players into early retirement so they can sign a media contract on the same day.

Scumbag!

And on cue the other half of the matched set appears. This is why I do not post on here much anymore. B4L you were not involved in anyway in the initial discussion. Instead of making a constructive post, you wait for hours later and then make a snide remark which I have noted is part of your usual form. You can take it as read that if I wanted your input I would have flushed.

UB, once again, you have also done the same thing making a smart arse response. Have a look at Superfreak's response to my post. That disagreed with me and provided a valid reason why my nagging doubt was wrong. I have no issue with anyone providing a contrary opinion. Indeed, you eventually did engage in a proper discussion about it. What does get tiresome here is the 5 year old taunts as per the quote above. I would have expected more from someone that was actually one of the staff/admins, but once again nothing surprises me.

I will leave you two to circle jerk each other.

Sad news, as I'm a great admirer of Cozza. So now we just need to go and get him his second premiership!

I hope he is going out on his own terms, as he definitely deserves it, but it doesn't have to be a push as much as a reality check.
Bennett could've simply told him the reasons why it would be better for him to retire now as opposed to a couple of years from now:
- Retaining Gillett and some talented youth coming through.
- Free cap space for the above and possibly allow another quality purchase.
- The realisation that although he hasn't slowed down on the field, he is playing less minutes now, and he could play that year too long that so often wrecks players legacies.
- Very nice media contract waiting for him if he does retire.

Anyway, I'm not saying goodbye just yet, but would love to do so when he lifts the NRL trophy in October!

Great post and I particularly agree with the last sentiment. Having had some time to digest the news I think you might be fairly close to the mark about how it played out. Seeing the interview with him tonight on the Matty Johns show it appears that his private thoughts were fairly different to what he was putting out in public. He looked to be content with his decision and I am happy for him. Very pleased that he has scored a good media role.

Nice bait. Do you come as a matched set?

It wasn't a bait, i was actually being relatively serious. You had concocted this entirely fanciful version of events so I didn't really think his was a stretch.

I'm well aware that I can come across as a bit of an arsehole on here at times, but I was actually just trying to be funny on this occasion. As for the assertion that UNbreakable and I are somehow teaming up against people you obviously do not read this forum or you are the one making jokes.

FWIW I don't think Bennett pushed him, as Porthoz says below he may have talked about some realities that resonated for Corey, but to suggest that Corey was 100% positive he wanted to play on and Bennett refused is just the kind of garbage that filth peddlers like Slothfield and RLW like to spin.

BTW if you want to take the moral high ground it may be worth steering away from condescending posts and insults.

Point taken and accepted (bolded).

If you go back and read my original post, I merely said I hope he had not been pushed, and that it was his decision because of the esteem in which I hold him as a player and a clubman. As indicated what appeared to be a sudden change in position did not make sense in light of his public statements about his intentions. Porthoz said much the same thing but was not attacked by UB. As UB conceded, WB does have form for giving players a tap on the shoulder. As I indicated no issue with having my impression challenged, just not the way it was done.

Having seen the interview last night on the Matty Johns show it became apparent that what he was saying in public might not have matched his internal thoughts and doubts. It would be no surprise at all for me if Parker bounced what he was thinking off Bennett and Bennett would have given him an honest perspective. Can we now put this to bed?

Only Parker knows how he's feeling both mentally and physically. Despite being in good form he is probably beginning to feel the pinch of his years.

It's the mark of a good player to know when your time is up. I'm sure his decision was not reached lightly, and not without frank discussion amongst him and the club.

This year is far from done, and I look forward to seeing him leading the charge for us.

Lewis being the captain of Queensland & Australia has absolutely nothing to do with the fact that he was on a decline, he would've been selected and named captain of Queensland & Australia in 90' regardless of his form. Man of the Match for Queensland in 91', fair enough, he was a legend that always stepped up for Queensland.

The point is, he was clearly going downhill at the time he was not offered a contract by the Broncos, Walters & Langer were the better (certainly long-term) options in the halves. There is absolutely no comparison to the Lewis situation and the current Parker situation.

Lewis - Form diminishing, broken arm twice in final season for Broncos, better options available at Five-Eighth, minimal cap space available to re-sign him.
Parker - Form of his career, never injured, no immediately better options at Lock, cap space available to sign him for 2016.

Where's the comparison lynx..

Lewis didn't break his arm twice in '90 and didn't captain Australia in 1990.

He had two operations on his knee and shoulder in the off-season and then during the year did two hamstrings and broke his arm.

The second hamstring was Giles' fault.

He was offered a contract too.

Wikipedia has lied to me.

I'm not a fan of people saying he had no say whatsoever.

Me either Nashy.

My guess is he was offered a contract at what Bennett thought he was worth and the cap could sustain at this stage of his career and Parker being the loyal club man that he is understood completely so he along with his manager went looking for opportunities elsewhere.

Instead of sooking it up in the media he chose the better of his available opportunities. Classy and professional as always he is looking to forge a career elsewhere and still be involved in the game.

I like the evolution of Parker; from young prop in the ’00 Grand Final against hard men like Lindsay, Scott and Bourke who really took it to him- missed a bad one on Lindsay to score but stayed in the game would have got them back when Wilson dropped it over the line after a nice gap ball from Parker playing with the ball on the right.

He showed plenty of skill that year and willingness then the next year was playing NRL. He still played 43 ISC games and two as recently as 2006 so he had a long apprenticeship learning his craft.

He’s evolved and changed his game depending on what was needed by the Broncos and the players around him and kept largely to a simple plan. Prop, lock, middle he’s been quite versatile and adaptable. His come back to Origin and the way he’s been part of this great Queensland side is a great story.

He's old school, you earn what you're given and it doesn't come easy. He hammers that message and doesn't let young players get anything too quickly.

This was pretty much what happened with Gillmeister when he moved on.

Fair enough and I apologise that I came across as a bait.

I think what you have said in the last paragraph makes most sense in this situation.

Yeah, thinking the same thing when reflecting on it this morning. We only see a small glimpse of what he's going through. A couple of years ago he went from being a guaranteed 80 minute player to 60-70 minutes a game. Managed during Origin. Rested at the end of games if the result was sealed. He probably looks at some of the old warhorses like Webcke & Larson (who they had on Triple M the other day), the latter of which said he can no longer run because of his knees etc, and doesn't want to be crippled or hampered for the rest of his life. No one would ever begrudge him that.

Could it be possible that Corey parker may be moving to England for one year or two, on a big money deal
