In a stunning appraisal in an internet column aboutState of Origin's most capped player, Peters, a member of Manly's premiership-winning teams in 1972-1973, said Lockyer has not earned the right to become the eighth Immortal.
Clive Churchill, John Raper, Reg Gasnier and Bob Fulton were the original Immortals in 1985, before Graeme Langlands and Wally Lewis (1999) and Arthur Beetson (2004) joined the elite.

Who is Peter Peters and when did his opinion become worthy of being published for public viewing. His parents must have loved him what a **** head name.

Gold Coast Titans pocket rocket Preston Campbell urged Lockyer to give his home fans one more curtain call in the Indigenous-NRL All Stars clash on February 4.

But Lockyer said: "I'm flattered that they think that. I have thoroughly enjoyed being part of the previous two All Star games but I think I will have had enough farewells by then.

"That week is about celebrating the indigenous representation in our game.

Pure class.

As for this Manly nuffie, who cares. Let them take shots at the great man like they've always done, and let them continue to be wrong, like they always are.

why do ppl still give a **** about the Immortals?

I thought a player had to be retired 5 years to be even nominated to become an immortal.

If so, by then there should be an 8th immortal, so Peters is correct.

Don't think so. When they were running through nominations for the 5th immortal (and 6th as it turned out) players like Langer, Johns and Fittler were nominated and they weren't even retired at that stage.

There should be a hall of fame though. Theres only 7 people in the Immortals, thats stupid. Theres more than 7 great players in the history of the game.

That's what makes it so prestigious.

They named the 100 players of the century in 2008. There's your first hall of fame entrants.

They already have a Hall of Fame.

They just haven't updated it in a few years.

The Immortals means as much as the Dally Ms.

It's a good marketing tool imo, and serves to keep great players from yesteryear names alive.

Meninga should be the next one.

Yeah, agreed with that. Arguably the best centre of all time, and led the Marrons to 6 series wins in a row.
I'd like to see how Lockyer goes after retiring, before locking him in. If he joins the 9 commentary team as has been suggested, I'll be very disappointed.

Do things like coaching or achievements after football even come into calculation though??

Mal has to be the next immortal.
Then Lockyer.

I would hope coaches have the chance to be rugby league immortals or something of similar esteem, Bennett and Gibson are both as important and worthy as the players who are and get touted for this honour.

Um I can't see why they would. It would be absolutely outrages to suggest that life after football achievements would be taken into consideration when assessing the eligibility of an immortal.

Don't agree. It's about someone's impact on the world of Australian rugby league. Actually playing the game is just one phase of a potentially long association with the game.

Guys. Come on. This is THE Peter Peters here. If he reckons this Lockyer person isn't good enough, he's probably right.

I swear old has beens write garbage such as this to get their name back in the spotlight. I mean if he wrote a column saying Lockyer should be the next immoral, most people would probably agree and it wouldn't even be given a second thought, but if he writes something controversial like this, it will get quoted everywhere.
