Dear NRL HQ & the media...

Time to train our players to duck into every tackle.
I wonder what's going to happen when a player correctly attempts to tackle a player low, only for the ball runner to be dropping to their knees.

The defender will be looking to make a copybook tackle but his shoulder (which he's meant to be driving with) will be lined up almost perfectly with the ball runner's head.

There's every chance some significant damage could occur under the new new NRL in an attempt to adjust to lower tackles... but the defender will likely be sent off and suspended for weeks for making a stock standard low tackle, which ironically is what the NRL is suggesting players start to do

Well Gamble was both penalised and binned for doing this just last night. Tackling too hard was one of the penalties.

I'm talking about tackling low... shoulder through the rib cage type of tackle

Roosters Daniel Tupou went up for a high ball and put the knee straight into Feldt's back. When it happened I said to my bro oh he's in trouble. Not a mention not a word. Feldt on the ground in pain, nothing said. Yet the Roosters went ballistic last week for Brown's knee to Hutchinson.

Horses for courses i suppose. This NRL is such a one-sided shit show at times.

this must be Vlandys with all the negative press from his changes this week and the fact that the media aren't kissing his ass like they're supposed to be doing ...

I said it 2 weeks ago, i will say it again, Teddy drops to his knee's right before he offloads and gets smashed in tackles.

It reminded me of Inglis when he was diving headfirst into the ground anytime someone tackled his legs.
Inglis got pulled up and called out for it, and we never saw it in his game again.

The same needs to happen with Tedesco.

To be fair, I've noticed Herbie has a tendency to duck into tackles as well. Think he got a penalty or two against Manly. Definitely agree on Tedesco. Dude seems to be running around on his knees half the time.

Trent Barrett:

“I played, I knew I was going to get hit in the head or neck occasionally, I’m fine with that. There’s no thuggery in the game anymore, it’s not like the 1980s. There are no swinging arms and elbows. Occasionally there will be contact there, nobody goes out to do it. It’ll turn into a game of Oztag, if that’s what they want and that’s the concern for us. You keep changing the rules, who knows where it’ll end up.”

Trent Robinson:

"We need to get better at not hitting players in the head. It’s been a bit over the top. But it will recalibrate after this weekend because there has been such an uproar about it. We also need to recalibrate our height of our tackle.”

V’landys:

“I’m not taking a backward step. It’s short-term pain for long-term gain. It will kill the game if we don’t get tough on foul play and particularly contact with the head. And while this is a decision by the commission, I did speak to Wayne Bennett in Brisbane who he himself said, ‘stay strong — we need this to happen for the entire game.’ "

"And that’s the point, unless we do something now we’re going to be paying in the long run. At the end of the day, we’re just implementing the rules. They’re not new rules. You’ve never been allowed to hit someone in the head. It’s always been there — it’s just that we’ve always taken a light approach to it. Well not anymore. We’re going to eradicate foul play. I personally felt sick for Drew Hutchison (after suffering a punctured lung) — imagine the pain he was in for three or four days. As an administrator, we’ve got to eradicate that.’’

“I’m open to looking at five-minute sin bins with the commission, but we have looked at in the past. And so at this stage it’s not on the agenda. We’ll stick to 10 minutes.’’

Bennett:

“I’m a bit worried about it. I’m getting confused. We talk about a fast, open game and that’s not what we’re doing. I’m not supportive of the game going on for a minute after it and then we all stop the whole game, go through the video and put someone on report and blow a penalty. You’ve got to understand the game relies on momentum. For the game to be attractive, it needs to have momentum in it. If the ref doesn’t see it, then let’s get on with it."

Who’s reffing the game now? Is it the bunker? The bunker is there for support of the referees. If the referee doesn’t see it, they can pick it up tomorrow and charge the player tomorrow. They’ve got all those rights."

“We’re not going to have a fast and free-flowing game if we miss the moment, let another four or five tackles go and then walk back to the mark. We’re not going to have the game we want to entertain the fans. What works for you today will work against you tomorrow. That could be us on the receiving end tomorrow.”

“Why is it acceptable in our game to hit blokes in the head when I’ve just talked about two other codes [AFL and rugby union] that won’t accept it? Are we right and they’re all wrong? I don’t think so.”

So all you ever had to do, you fucking slimy sleazy muppet, is actually IMPLEMENT THE FUCKING RULES CONSISTENTLY. No-one asked for this kneejerk change except maybe Nick Fucking Politis. A few weeks ago poor Tommy Deardon nearly had his head taken off and there was crickets until the MRC.

Vlandys and Politis, has there ever been a more unlikeable duo around the game (and I can think of a few)??

And then there’s Andrew No Power And Always Talk in Generalisations Abdo.

Quale and Authurson were the previous worst. Pair of absolute criminals.

Weird that he mentions getting rid of head contact then gives an example of something completely different.

I disagreed with you then saying no player would purposely cop head highs but I couldn't have been more wrong. After watching what unfolded yesterday, Tedesco 100% went low to cop the head high with the reward being even greater now (near certain sin bin and a definite free interchange) it couldn't have been more obvious.

Absolute wanker that bloke. Imagine exploiting player welfare rules to gain a tactical advantage.

Yea mate its disgusting, and stupid.
I get teams taking advantage of certain rules, but to exploit rules that are in place to protect people from harm is as low as it gets.

Inglis wasn't as bad but still sketchy as it was around the same time that Mckinnon broke his neck.

McKinnon broke his neck because he was trying to exploit a rule for player safety.
