POST GAME Finals week 2 - Broncos vs Panthers

Just watched fox sports post game. Sickening display from Gasnier and Kent as well as the sycophant female presenter nodding along. Couldn't care less about how badly Oates was injured. If you complain about missing a 'try' off a guys misfortune like that says a lot about 'season' and character. Besides how do these 'experts' not understand was accidental offside when ball hit Milford. Mandatory stoppage once that happens.

Sick of NRL coverage like this. Small minded and biased. Self flagellation at best but really just toxic.

I don't get too caught up in the scores. If I had to rate Matt Gillett I would employ the Arrested Development grading system and give him a Puppy/10. What I care more about is the assessment and Sproj's take that Gillett's first half was poor but he had a great second is really spot on.

I know the go to defence for Gillett's approach is that he's defending kick returns, but it was evident he was making misses in his own half and falling off tackles he shouldn't be. By his own admission he was disappointed with his effort and made the necessary adjustments to have a better second half.

Along with everyone else, he's capable of better and has to be better next week if the Broncos are to win.

Well, my argument is the score, because it puts him squarely and objectively as the worst Bronco on the park, and that was my issue, not the argument about Gillett being below par in the first half, or not being capable of better.
That said, the go to defence for Gillett is based on reality, not imagination. He is 90% of the time, one of the first chasers trying to stop a kick return.

I think perception, and certainly expectation, play a huge role. If someone not named Matt Gillett plays like him on the night, he probably gets a 7.5 or 8. He definitely gets at least a better score than the invisible Ese2 or Sam "feet planted" Thaiday for example.

Milford is another player that usually suffers from this weight of expectation and sees his errors magnified, watering down everything else he does.

Well if the issue is with the scoring so be it but please don't put too much weighting into it because you are absolutely right, a 5 for Gillett is probably a 7 for other players and that is a testament to his capability. Same for Milf really. But my scoring generally consists of comparing players against themselves, against others and pure gut feel. I care more about the comments. :)

I understand that, and really said as much, so please don't take my comments as an attack on you, but merely as a disagreement on what I see as the only objective measure by which you judge a player, as compared to the others on the field.

You didn't do that, you turned it into a subjective measure of how he performed, as compared to how you would expect him to perform at his best. You're essentially grading players against their potential (sorry @Cult3 , there is that word again), instead of the weight of their performance on the game, hence my comment about him getting lower scores than Thaiday or Ese2 for example.

Hey @Super Freak.

What did you make of the short kick-off at the 31st minute? Had the ball broken the plain? Or did Harawira-Naera jump the gun?

My initial thought was that he knocked it back at about the 9 metre mark, making it a penalty to us. Didn't really matter in the end, we got the ball back regardless.

I thought penalty to us.

The ball had no curve on it, so I can't see how it could have broken the plain. Harawira-Naera did bat it back while that ball was inside the 10 metres, but I don't think the ball had broken the plain.

Every angle suggests it didn't.

I thought he jumped from outside the 10 mark, does that make it legal for him to bat the ball back, even if it hasn't passed the 10 meter in the air?

I don't think it does.

The ball has to go at least 10 metres before anyone can play at it. I don't think it matters if you jump from outside the 10.

You're right, but there's a difference having tackle 1 15m out from the line and potentially having it 40m out.

By the rules the ball has to travel 10m before a player touches the ball.

Do you remember the 09 Grand Final?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Chambers make a huge leap from outside of his 10m line to play at a short kick off that failed to go the 10? It proved a huge turning point and the Eels nearly stole the game from Melbourne.

I wonder if there's any footage?

I love these short drop outs keep em coming if you are willing to man up in defence.

I didn't mind the first one.

The last one just about gave me a heart-attack. There's an obvious method to the madness but it just about backfired.

It's hard to judge in this situation, not having a camera directly aligned with the 10 meters line.

It actually makes sense. You get the ball back or you are defending on your line without wasting energy to sprint up to the 30/40 and then end up back on your line anyway. Plus you have a set defensive line straight away that aren't stuffed from sprinting 40.
