Gasiner returns to League

Let me out it this way: If Mark Gasiner, Israel Folau and Mark Gasnier were part of a meal then Gasiner would be the main meal, Folau would be an entree and Gasnier would be the condiment.

very dumb move IMO.

Costigan is already gone, you'll probably see another 1 or 2 players go. But Saints have heaps of depth in a lot of positions, I doubt they'll be hurt by this. Gasnier in that current St George backline is just scary. It gives them that extra strike power. We know how good they are defensively and sometimes they have had trouble with chasing points, but now they have some serious strike weapons in their backline.

Coxy - I think Hornby is doing a top job. Our 2006 Grand Final proved that you don't need an amazing halfback to win a comp. Hornby has a good combination with Soward I think. I don't think they lack much in the halves whatsoever.[/quote:30jw5ylh]

Soward is no Lockyer but.

Matthew Head was a way better option at half but he is gornskies. They will still win the comp.

like how they were shoe ins for it last year too?

theyll choke again, and when the other big teams ramp it up a notch the saints wont have that extra gear.[/quote:313vxdl0]

Not so sure about that. Soward definitely has more to his game this year. Priddis is a far better hooker than Fein. Boyd is the 2nd best fullback in the competition behind Slater. Say what you like about Gasnier, but he'll create some havoc out wide if he gets good ball.

I think they have most of the ingredients to go better than last year when the whips are cracking. Easily the premiership favourites with daylight second and Penrith, Tigers, Titans, Broncos, Rabbitohs, Manly and Parramatta all equally placed to emerge as contenders. None of them is yet, but they all have the potential to be, and some critical frailties that may be insurmountable.

+1, I enjoy watching the Dragons choke!!

ud think all the players coming back to league would be a sign for the likes of folau and hunt. we've had sailor, tuqiri, gasnier, tahu and rogers all return from stints in union. maybe the grass isnt always greener boys

I think it actually made the decision easier for the defectors.

Make your name in League, go to another a code for a few years and make big money and then be welcomed back to League with open arms. What have they go to lose?

yeah i can see it like that as well. yes, it must say to them that the other codes arent going to 'fulfil' their competitive needs/love for the game - but it also says that they can go and get rich then be welcomed back to the game they love, and get a $2mil payday in the process, with open arms.

the problem is that league gets the player in their developing years, and their twilight years, but not in their best years. Folau will spend the best years of his career wasted in AFL. Tuqiri spent the best years of his career catching a cold in a game that he clearly didnt really enjoy. Hunt will no doubt spend what couldve been his best years being mocked/hated/targetd by AFL players and looking out of sorts and out of his depth in a game that hes not cut out for.

I hate the whole "Backending" thing. I know the Broncos did it with Folau, but to me it's just wrong. Should be base salary plus incentive bonuses/upgrades for number of games played, rep honours, things like that. But the base salary should be the same across the whole contract.

IMO Locky has jumped the gun on this one a little. When you consider the Dragons are only paying Gasnier for 3 months work I think the amount is a fair reflection of that.

But it's a long contract. If they were going to do it they should've just offered a 3 month contract for the rest of 2010, and a separate deal for 2011+.

He's playing half the comp, how is that a fair reflection? [icon_shru

Preseason started pretty much 8 months ago.. Players salary reflects the fact that they are 'working' from November - September. Gasnier is working July - Sept. I think a reduced contract for this season is fair enough. Next year he is back to market value, isn't he on 400k p/a for the next 2 or 3 years?
