Gasiner returns to League

'Backending' is rubbish. It is basically a loop hole in the system. The salary cap is 'supposedly' designed so if a situation like this arose (where a gun player is available on the market) the shitter teams are meant to have a chance to get them... in this case the Raiders or the Sharks snagging Gaz would have been a fair outcome... however the TOP team and the favs for the comp snagging Gaz???... Lockyer is absoultely right.... it isn't what the cap is designed for...

FTR I hate the cap as it is.
i dont really see a problem with backending the contract. sure, they get him for 120k this year.......but for the next 4 years theyre paying him like 450k a season! that is FAR too much to be paying a 30/31/32 year old centre.

backending doesnt mean they get the player on the cheap, it just means theyre delaying the payday. in 3 years time when they need to buy new guys theyre gonna be in all sorts of trouble having $450k wrapped up in an over the hill centre.

While this is all true, the upside to this is that for the years they are delaying the payday, they end up more free money to stack their team with other better players during those seasons. This is not fair imo.

I wonder how long it will be until some team tries to frontend players contracts, then tries to backend other players contracts when the fronended contracts are coming in to their final season. Could end up woth quite an awesome team in that year or twos overlap.

Players contracts should be split evenly over the years of their contracts. This would mean that every year, each team is actually under the salary cap, not just because they've done some fancy accounting to get them under the cap.

[quote="Bucking Beads":1za77jqo]Gasnier, wow I am shaking in my boots. Dragons will still choke!!! Dragons need decent halves not a centre who is just as over-rated as Hayne.

A decent halfback is all they need. Hornby is rat shit. Soward is going great guns at five-eighth. Priddis is a consummate professional at hooker. And Boyd is carving up from fullback. Only piece of the puzzle missing is the 7 IMO.

Maybe they should chase Shane Perry, he is still playing in the QLD cup ![/quote:1za77jqo]

i fogot about him he had a good year in 06 then was lost
