Payne Haas has paid his dues, and is now entitled to dust off his work boots and stare down Brisbane's nemesis, the Melbourne Storm.
Petero Civoniceva said:
“Everyone in rugby league can see the immense talent that he is. Ultimately it’s up to Payne at the end to decide what he wants out of his football career. He needs to understand the proud history of the club. We’ve taken a hit and it’s up to blokes like Payne and our young players to take ownership of that. That’s what’s expected of them. It comes down to what Payne wants. He can create a wonderful legacy for himself, his family and the club. But it’s up to him."
“It’s been a big learning curve for him with the things that have happened so far in his career and how great an impact that can have on him reaching his full potential. It’s about him and the decisions he makes. Having spoken to Payne and seeing the way he’s responded, I know he’s taken the message on and understands the impact those things can have on the club, supporters and his teammates. He will be raring to go and represent the Broncos in the best way possible.”
Spoiler alert
“I have no doubt it has hurt him a lot, he is very close to the boys and loves the club. You can imagine that would obviously hurt. He’s got a job to do now for the club. He’s got to win back the respect and repay the faith the club has shown in him."
“Knowing Payne, he will do the very best job possible to ensure that happens. He would have loved to have been out there but he’s taken full responsibility for what occurred. He has made sure he has ticked all the boxes of what the club required of him and trained as hard as possible."
“Everyone who knows Payne will know he applies himself 110 per cent. He has done really well and is raring to go.”
Coach Kevin Walters says Payne will start alongside fellow book end Matt Lodge, who returns from a hamstring injury:
“We have missed Payne. He is a great player, one of the best props in the game, so without him I’ve needed the other guys to step up. It’s always been the Broncos way. The guys need to step up and get the job done regardless of who is in the team. But Payne is a special talent.”
