Gorden Tallis: Lack of creative Broncos playmakers will cost them in finals

GORDEN TALLIS,
The Courier-Mail
August 24, 2019 3:10pm

Imagine for a second that the Brisbane Broncos were a Formula 1 car. The wheels – the outside backs – would be flying. The engine – the forward pack – would be roaring. But the steering wheel – the playmakers – wouldn’t be working. After watching the Broncos-Bunnies game on Friday night, what stood out for me is that Brisbane is in urgent need of spinal surgery this off-season.

You can have a dominant forward pack and outside backs to burn but if the spine is lacking in confidence or in their ability to execute, there is only so far you can go in the NRL. And you aren’t going far.

This Brisbane team can’t play any better than what they played against the Rabbitohs. Payne Haas was outstanding yet again while Matt Lodge was very good too. In the past eight weeks, Haas and Lodge have been the best one-two punch in the NRL. Brisbane brought Glenn Lazarus to the Broncos in the early 1990s to help them win a comp because you aren’t raising any trophies without a really good front-rower to do the heavy lifting and the club has got an embarrassment of riches in the front row again.

Not to mention David Fifita who took his game to another level by terrorising the Bunnies, Joe Ofahengaue was tough and classy as always while Matt Gillett did a really good job in his comeback game from injury. Yet they lost the game to a no-frills, cut-price Rabbitohs pack that was without all of the Burgess brothers. Brisbane’s forwards created so many opportunities for their outside men – far more than Souths – yet Wayne Bennett had the two points in his back pocket after 80 minutes. And the problem came down to the core of playmakers for Brisbane – the 9, 7, 6 and 1. They aren’t asking enough questions of the opposition defence and they aren’t putting their outside men away after their forwards create the kind of platform that halfbacks and hookers dream about.

Rabbitohs edge Broncos in fiery victory

Brisbane have enough outside backs for the next 12 years with guys like Kotoni Staggs, Xavier Coates, Herbie Farnworth and someone like Corey Oates who is an absolute luxury for them. But the blokes who touch the footy more than most are just not clicking the way they should be if you want to be serious about making the finals and making some noise in September. Brisbane need a running hooker who can jump out of dummy-half and make the most of those Payne Haas charges. But they aren’t getting that running game until James Segeyaro is thrown into the game.

They need someone to do what Damien Cook did the other night. He didn’t get a heap of chances but he made the most of the ones that he got. He was outstanding. The Broncos halves have been a concern all season while Anthony Milford needs to inject himself into the game more from fullback. When he does, he is devastating. So maybe Brisbane need to have a look at their recruiting. Maybe they need to have a look at the spine because it’s just not getting the job done. Once they fix that, that racing car will be humming.

For a Titans ambassador he sure likes to talk about the Broncos.

We need a half. Just one decent one.

And we already have the solution to hooker, we just need a coach willing to pull the trigger...

Oh, and those solutions would also resolve our salary cap issues too...

Ideally next off-season we see Boyd and McCullough suddenly realise they are done and do the honourable thing. Matt Gillett gets another season and does the right thing by the club.

Suddenly our cap issues are fixed and we will actually have some change to maybe look at bolstering our existing squad, rather than just retaining it...

Maybe, but I think he could be a pretty decent 5/8 for us, so I’m willing to give him one more year.

That extra money from Boyd, McCullough and Gillett after next year, would be exactly what we need to finalise our retention and perhaps look for a decent maybe even rep level, left centre...

It is in a way reassuring. If Tallis can see it(provided he just didn't read BHQ again) then Seibs can definitely see it too.

I think next year is his last so is good for the youngsters in sos and dearden, depending on which way they go.
