A DEFIANT Melbourne are set to play hardball with Brisbane by refusing to provide a $100,000-plus subsidy to deliver Greg Inglis to the Broncos.

In a possible blow to Brisbane's hopes of snaring Inglis, The Courier-Mail understands the Storm will not agree to a salary-cap enforced release if the Maroons star's Broncos deal requires a six-figure injection from Melbourne.

But the Broncos are prepared to call Melbourne's bluff in the high-stakes game of chess, with the Storm facing the grim prospect of shedding another three top-liners to deny Brisbane and keep Inglis on their books for 2011. With the Broncos refusing to budge on their base offer of $400,000-a-season, any Inglis deal at Brisbane would need to be topped up by the Storm, who currently pay the Test centre a rumoured $660,000 annually.

But the Storm are refusing to concede defeat, with the club only prepared to provide the Broncos with a minor top-up that would have minimal impact on their $4.3 million salary cap for 2011.

"If we have to make a considerable contribution, which will affect our salary cap position, there is not a chance in the world we will do that (provide a major subsidy to Inglis' contract)," a Storm insider told The Courier-Mail.

Melbourne are loath to release the game's No.1 strike weapon to arch-rivals Brisbane on a deal in which they would be forced to continue to pay part of his wage.

But the shattered club may be forced to take its medicine as rival NRL clubs circle fellow Storm colleagues Sika Manu, Adam Blair, Brett White and Kevin Proctor.

The Brisbane team will likely have to wait a little longer to know if they have officially secured Inglis, with any definitive call on the Kangaroos sensation not expected until next week.

Storm football manager Frank Ponissi is hoping to meet NRL salary cap auditor Ian Schubert in the next week to get a clearer picture of the club's fiscal position.

"There's been no movement since Monday and I don't anticipate any movement until next week, if there is any movement," Ponissi said.

Inglis' manager, Allan Gainey, who spoke to Ponissi yesterday, confirmed the outcome now hinges on a severance deal being struck between Melbourne and the NRL.

Despite the Titans being able to match Brisbane's offer, Inglis' preference remains to link with Test skipper Darren Lockyer at Red Hill.

The Storm yesterday began their official rebuilding period by unveiling new CEO Ron Gauci.

Gauci succeeds former boss Brian Waldron and immediately takes the helm from acting CEO Frank Stanton.

He is the former managing director of IT company Verizon Business.

Small change blocking Inglis' move

AS LITTLE as $20,000 stands between Greg Inglis and Brisbane, with the Broncos and Melbourne in the final stages of negotiations that look certain to end in the Test centre becoming the first of the ''Big Four'' to leave the Storm.

The Gold Coast are still in the race but Inglis has made it clear the Broncos are his only other potential home outside the Storm. A deal with Brisbane appears a fait accompli providing the numbers are satisfactorily crunched by the NRL's salary cap auditor, Ian Schubert, who will meet Melbourne's football manager, Frank Ponissi, on Monday.

It is understood $20,000, which is part of Melbourne's contribution to Inglis's Brisbane salary, is the only stumbling block, apart from NRL approval, while the NRL must also consent to an appeal from Inglis to grant him a release on compassionate grounds.

Brisbane had hoped for a $100,000 injection from the Storm on top of their $400,000 offer, although Melbourne have continued to baulk at that figure. It is now believed the Storm have moved to within $20,000 of Brisbane's asking price and are willing to contribute $80,000 worth of Inglis's salary.

The final go-ahead will rest with meetings between Ponissi and Schubert. Their talks will centre around the salary cap implications of any cash the Storm contribute to the deal, with hopes any top-ups can be either included in this year's breach or fall under the second-tier cap.

Inglis is on a deal worth $660,000 a season at the Storm and Brisbane are believed to have sourced more than $100,000 worth of third-party funding to compensate for the shortfall. Between $30,000 and $50,000 of that would be a contribution from the Queensland Former Origin Greats (FOGs) organisation, which would use Inglis as an indigenous ambassador for the regular expos they conduct around the rural and regional centres of Queensland.

The FOGs funding was available for any Queensland club which cared to ask but Inglis is looking only at Brisbane, a side containing some of his close friends from State of Origin and the city where his fiancee, Sally Robinson, has just begun a new career. Ron Gauci, who was unveiled at a media conference in Melbourne yesterday as Storm CEO, was immediately confronted with questions regarding the cap breach and Inglis.

Inglis's manager Allan Gainey, who spoke to Ponissi yesterday, said the deal was now in the hands of Melbourne and the NRL.

He said the Titans could match Brisbane's offer with the top-up of the FOGs funding but the Broncos were the firm favourite.

''It's up to Melbourne to sort it out with the NRL which doesn't involve me,'' Gainey said. ''Greg's first preference though is definitely for the Broncos, subject to his release and his contract being terminated in the right manner. If that happened to fall over, which I don't think it would, then the Titans could be a back-up. Although I've told Michael Searle [Titans managing director] Brisbane is his preference.''

Storm skipper Cameron Smith said the team would not hold any grudges against Inglis for leaving.

''It's a bit of a different situation for him [Inglis] … his fiancee's up in Brisbane at the moment and a lot of his family,'' Smith said. ''… Greggy is only a young fellow and it'll be tough living away from her, but there's not going to be any grudges held against anyone who feels that they have to go.

'It's been tough on the players because at this stage I don't think our club can sign anyone for next year because of the legal stuff going on at the moment but I've been told that the NRL and the club are trying to work through that as fast as they can. We need to get our roster sorted out, and the NRL needs us to get our roster sorted out, because they need us down here being a competitive club.''

It's funny that these BS reports keep coming out.

Can we wait till Monday? Or are we just loving the BS media reports saying "OMG HE'S NOT GOING TO BE SIGNED". If these journos did 10 minutes research, they would find out about a press conference, and the two tems on the agenda for that conference.
