Haas - Off Field Dramas

Thing is, it happened in Sept Nov last year. Why are we debating it now and Paul White has a presser end of Feb. This shit needed to happen sooner and certainly not just before start of season.
Don't you worry, we'll have CCTV footage of the family fight one week before round 5 when Haas is due to play.

The Integrity Unit doesn't just handle NRL-level football, right? They're responsible for looking after second-tier comps as well, right? Just because this incident didn't happen at an NRL game doesn't mean it's out of the IU's jurisdiction. They still need to investigate what went on, and determine which players, if any, should be punished for their involvement.

By not responding to the IU's questioning satisfactorily, he's deliberately impeding their investigation. You're off your tits if you don't think that's worthy of a reprimand.

Sorry guys, late to the party here, but jaysus from what I have read here and on the news sites, Haas seems incredibly hard done-by in my opinion. There has to be more to the story, surely? I mean, a $20,000 fine and suspended for a month of footy, and he supposedly was not even involved in the reported incident in any way?

Maybe just a fine, or a suspension for the upcoming trial game/or the season opener in a few weeks would have seemed a more fitting punishment in my view. The 4 game suspension just seems ridiculously over the top to me and disproportionate to the 'not fully cooperating offence'.

What also really pisses me off is that there is an alleged rapist, i.e. Jack de Belin, who appears free to play from the start of the season. WTF.

I don't get how people can't see that Haas is in trouble for breaking the standards expected of players at the Brisbane Broncos. I'm pleased we treat players this way if they don't meet our standards. It's what's going to separate us from other clubs.
I think everyone can see what he's in trouble for, no one here is that blind to the situation. Those of us who disagree, actually disagree with the bullshit standard that not telling the NRL IU what your family got in a fight over is 4 game suspension worthy.

I think anyone who thinks he should tell his employer what his family got up to in a matter outside of his employment is off their tits.

Maybe the should fucking punish him , Instead of letting him play. Think about it for a second yeah.
I'm not fucking arguing about whether the Dragons/NRL after correct for letting JDB play ... This is about using the Dragons lack of disciplinary action as a reason that we were wrong in handing down the penalties to Haas ...

The Dragons lack of balls is not something to a aspire to...

Privacy of their own home, sure. But it was during a game of Rugby League. That falls within the IU's responsibility.

On the face of it, it's a harsh penalty. Four weeks for not complying with an incident he didn't commit, that's a steep price to play, especially for a player in his position. It leads me to believe there's more to this story than meets the eye that will explain certain gaps in the story. Information like the violent history of the Haas family, the Haas family's involvement with police and the Rugby League community and the timeline of events.

I'm prepared to give both parties the benefit of the doubt here. I don't necessarily think Payne Haas is being selfish and immature and by the same token, I don't think the Broncos came to this decision just to please the Rugby League media. Fact is, Payne Haas has been served a four week suspension, which may as well be six given he'll have to get some reps in in QRL and if more information comes out, then we can make a better assessment of the situation.

Wait this was a fight on the field? Why are the police involved then? Why can't the refs be a witness?

Was it? Do we have a source? Also, I rarely agree with Peter Tunks but he brought up a good point. What clown, when they see some disturbance , thinks, no, I won’t ring the coppers, I’ll ring the NRL Integrity Unit!

Broncos suspend Payne Haas for four weeks and fine him $20,000

Suspended rookie prop Payne Haas has spoken of his disappointment at letting down Brisbane bosses and has vowed not to ruin his promising NRL career at the Broncos.
As revealed by The Courier-Mail, Haas will miss the start of the premiership, with Broncos CEO Paul White confirming the 19-year-old had been fined $20,000 and banned for four NRL games for failing to comply with an NRL integrity unit probe.
Haas was also axed from Saturday night’s trial against Wynnum Manly, just 24 hours after being named in the starting side to face the Seagulls at Kougari Oval.

Payne Haas will miss the first four weeks of the season.
Haas – considered a certainty to be in Brisbane’s top 17 this season – will miss the Broncos’ first month of premiership games against Melbourne, the Cowboys, Dragons and the Roosters.
The 117kg prop is rated the NRL’s next front-row superstar.
Contracted to Brisbane until the end of 2024, Haas last night told The Courier-Mail he will not let the first serious incident of his embryonic career derail his dream of being a 10-year Bronco.
“I accept the Broncos decision,” said Haas, who spoke with coach Anthony Seibold yesterday about his demotion for this week’s trial.
“I understand I have let the Broncos and myself down on this occasion.
“I will spend the next five years of my career here with the Broncos making it up to those who have shown faith in me.”

Brisbane Broncos CEO Paul White acted decisively.
While White said Haas was not guilty of any unlawful offence, Broncos hierarchy took a dim view of the teenager’s reluctance to assist an NRL investigation into two off-field incidents involving family members last year.
One was an alleged matter involving violence, at which Haas was allegedly present, but not directly involved, prompting a member of the public to lodge a formal complaint with the Broncos.
Brisbane hierarchy escalated the complaint to NRL integrity unit officers, who subsequently interviewed Haas, but believed the talented forward provided limited information that stymied a thorough investigation.

White said it was important to note that Haas was not subject to any police probe.
But he said Haas’ suspension for not complying with the NRL should serve as a warning to the entire Broncos squad of the expectation of upholding the values of Queensland’s flagship club under new coach Seibold.
“It is a heavy price to pay for Payne (missing four games), as well as receiving a substantial fine,” White said.
“But let me say his level of co-operation with the investigation led by the NRL fell short of our expectations and the standards we set at this club.
“We hope it sends a strong message that the values and conduct of everyone at the Broncos is of the utmost importance to the club.

Cowboys formalise leadership
“We have a duty to protect the reputation of our club and our game.
“What was good enough yesterday may not be good enough tomorrow. Payne needs to learn from this and so do we.
“The message is we are accountable.”
Haas’ management pledged to help the teenager through a difficult period and ensure he lifts his personal standards on and off the field to set himself up for a successful 2019 campaign.
“Payne is a young man who will learn from this and move forward,” said managing director of PSM Chris Orr.
“It is a big penalty for a young man at the start of his career ... but one he has accepted.”

You can respect him for not dobbing in your family. It's fine, but it doesn't necessarily mean that you'll be let off either. People investigating you don't really give a shit if you are protecting your family or not, you either help them or you don't. 4 weeks is definitely harsh though.

The Jack De Bellin situation doesn't really matter here IMO - if he's guilty, he won't play another game at all, not just 4.

I am not happy with it but I understand it. It is easy to understand both the family loyalty and the expectations of a business. If any employer asks you to go before an investigation board you do it, you answer the questions honestly and with integrity and if you feel you can'tger, get a union rep or a lawyer to advise you because shit like that can result in termination, in the real world.

This is also a shot across the bow of all our younger crop. Act accordingly or sit it out for a while.

The fine would more than likely be a percentage of his salary, so it would change from player to player.

I'm glad we have shown our hand and made it clear we have a standard of behaviour we expect from our players. It's not like we turn our back on blokes either when they go off the rails. Haas knew any expectations the club had regarding his behaviour. I have sympathy for Payne having to make the choice because it wouldn't be easy having your family involved.
