Referees coach Robert Finch revealed changes to the downtown rule - where defenders chase downfield from a clearing kick -- had been motivated by the brilliance of Hayne and Billy Slater, as well as fellow fullback Matt Bowen.

As of this season, players will be penalised if they start in an offside position and continue downfield against the orders of the referee. Call it the Hayne-Slater rule.

Interesting....

Not really sure how this will work, does this mean if you're offside from a kick u basically have to stay where u are until the kicker has run past?

It looks that way. I think it's a positive rule change.

I agree, it makes no sense to reward a player for being offside by allowing them to tackle the opposition after only 10 metres

So this isn't a rule that allows players to tackle Hayne in Billy Cantona style?

Disappointing.

Looking forward to seeing Denan Kemp take full advantage of this rule on his kick returns.

I love the way you think!!! icon_thumbs_u icon_thumbs_u [eusa_clap.gi

The rule has good intentions but may just slow the game down a bit.
There is no way I would be wanting a fullback like Slater, Hayne or Bowen etc returning a kick with even more room so I would think coaches will get the kickers to go for the sideline more often and defend from a scrum.
Then again it may increase the number of chip kicks, it all depends on field position really but it will be interesting how this pans out.

What? I'm fairly certain he'll be in the team come the opening game of the season.

He is dreaming I am almost certain this rule will be renamed after Denan Kemp by the end of the season!!! icon_thumbs_u

didn't this use to be the rule years ago? And nameing it after players is just fucking stupid. What a cockhead.

I think it's a slight tweaking to the old "downtown" rule that came about in the late 80's

I think it's slightly retarded.

What if the kicker puts you back onside? Sems dumb to me.

I can see your point.. at what stage does the ref say "ok you're offside". he cant do it straight away, because the kicker could easily run as soon as he kicks it. What if Kenny is 10m in front of lockyer when he kicks it, he jogs another 10m, but in the same time locky starts springing to put everyone on side. Does the ref blow the whistle while kenny is jogging, or give locky the chance to put him onside

Fucking hell. Yet another kneejerk interpretation change to fix a problem that doesn't exist.

Surrender/dominant anybody?

BTW, the existing downtown rule that isn't applied at the moment is (according to a Q Cup referee mate of mine), along the lines of:

"a player in front of the kicker cannot go past the point of the last play the ball until the ball has passed over their head"

So I think the situation Finch is talking about is ball is played, dummyhalf throws it to kicker, but forwards are already sprinting up field to get to within roughly 10m of where the ball lands so their defence is set early.

Under the actual rule that isn't enforced, the players can't go past the point of the play the ball until the kick has gone over their heads. Then they can start running. But still can't go past the 10m unless the kicker has passed them.

Yep seems a bit pointless to me. It's like they think "what rules can we change to make it look like we're doing something?" rather than "what problems need to be fixed?".
