Hoffman rejects bulldogs, eyes no.6 at Broncos

it concerns me that (from what it appears) hoffy doesnt see himself becoming one of the best centres in the game. now that hodges is out there is an opening for another permanent centre.

why is this even an issue anyway? i know the media is probably putting words in his mouth but to me this shouldnt even come up.

Re: [RUMOUR] Barba to Broncos

anyone who thinks NRL players express their true thoughts when a microphone / tape recorder is under their nose is deluded in the extreme.

I'm sure the vast majority on this forum are smart enough to know that so perhaps this so-called 'agenda' must run both ways .... ?

You're blowing it way out of proportion.

Hoffman utters one sentence "I’d be a bit disappointed, but I was disappointed this year when Corey got the fullback spot" and apparently he's having a whinge and he's selfish....

Nothing wrong in saying you would be disappointed if someone was recruited for your preferred position. Nothing wrong at all.

If he said "i'm a bit pissed they're looking at Barba and if he comes here I might consider my options at another club" and repeated that over and over again, then you might have a point.

Re: [RUMOUR] Barba to Broncos

I don't mean to be rude but anyone who takes the quotes of professional sports people on face value is fucking stupid ...

So why did the broncos see fit to yank him out of a press conference on Friday as soon as the question of barba’s arrival was asked ? because it's a non-issue ? sure …. the newspaper says so ... lmao

but here's a quote for you anyway ...

Hoffman may again play second fiddle if, as expected, the Bulldogs and Raiders ultimately let the talented Queensland duo return to Brisbane for personal reasons in 2014.
"I’d be a bit disappointed, but I was disappointed this year when Corey got the fullback spot," he said.

Yes, disappointed to lose his spot cos his deemed not good enough. If I got moved to another role at my work cos I was deemed not up to the job I would be pretty fucking disappointed to.

Even if it meant you'd be a better chance of winning whatever the equivalent of a premiership is in your line of work ?

That's not the point, he is saying he would be disappointed, not that he will go to another club. As Unbreak suggested in the only other argument about this he could have worded it better, like "I would be disappointed if I wasn't up to the task" but what would you prefer him to say, "oh yeah nah I don't really care"

There's always someone better (except Inglis).

It's about the team, not where someone wants to play. In any case, unlike shooting eels in a fishbowl, Hoffa now has 3 games against good quality opposition to stake his claims

Huh? He has knocked back going to the dogs and has said he would play 6. He's basically saying he will play anywhere.

Except on the wing .......which is where we need him to play, but he doesn't want to play there of which he is making abundantly clear by the way he keeps throwing up every position in the team other than wing.

He'll be putting his hand up to play lock next....

Ok, can someone explain to me the Hoffman is going to be a great centre theory, there's clearly something I'm missing and I'll forgo the negativity for now, so someone can explain what they see that means he's going to automatically become a great player there.

I would like these points considered and a response:

Not overly strong
Doesn't run great lines
Doesn't appear to have ball skills/ability to setup outside man
Learning a new position in top grade at 26.
Doesn't appear to have game intelligence (spotting a lapse, an overlap, fatigue in the line, etc)

I can see that he's a good defender and an enthusiastic attacker, but I think you need to be a bit more than that in centre - it's why I think wing is perfect for him, totally utilizes his strengths and doesn't overcomplicate his role - he can still come in for work when he wants but he's expected to be on the end of it rather than starting a move, it's why I'd be against moving him from the wing, don't we all now remember what it was like to have quality wingers instead of whoever the flash in the pan/best 'n fairest club trainer of the year blow-in from Q-Cup.

As a manager in your line of work, I assume you will have to deal with that kind of problem on a regular base.
One of your primary tasks will be to get your guys to perform at their best, by getting the right man to do the right job.

Once in a while you'll get a guy thinking he is much better at something than he actually is, and throwing a tantrum because you assigned him to a job/position, most times without a pay reduction, and gave the job he wanted to someone you felt was a better choice.
Often, that guy will go looking for greener pastures, because he thinks you're an arsehole with no clue. On rare occasions, the guy will succeed, but in general, he will end up doing the same or worse job you assigned to him at a worse company, under worse conditions and even worse pay!
On other times, the guy will be disappointed, but mostly in himself, knuckle down and do his best where he was assigned and become a great asset in that spot.

I don't know which one Hoffman will be, but so far he has done the latter and has shown he can be a terrific winger/centre. Hopefully Hook can convince him of his value there...

Barba - FB
Hoffman - Wing/Centre
Milford/Prince - 5/8

...is how next year will start, provided our predicted signings happen. Talk of Hoffman competing for the FB position is BS. Talk of him possibly playing 5/8 is a media beat up.....unless we don't get Milford. I could see it being tested during the trials in that case.

i think the 5/8 thing is a bit of his manager trying to get the most money he can for hoffy, which is just how things are.
i think the media making more on the whole 'disappointed' thing than whats actually there. sure ideally he'd love to be a fb but the way he played on the wing this year doesnt show me that he's annoyed to be out there. he has ALWAYS looked like he just wants to do his very best for the team. ill believe that until theres any real evidence otherwise.

Re: [RUMOUR] Barba to Broncos

Anyone who thinks Hoffy is up to a move into the 6 is delusional. He is a ball runner. He has less ball playing ability than Sam Burgess FFS

He lost his spot to Corey Norman (who no one on this board rates) twice over 4 years because he didn't have adequate ball playing that is expected of fullbacks in the modern game.

People have short memories though and he's coming off a really good game. Let's see what the board's comments are if he goes back to the status quo in the next 3 weeks.

Hoffman has shown questionable attitudes and personality traits before

and speaking for myself,

it's the main cause for concern /suspicion regarding his 'reported" reactions to Ben Barba's impending arrival at the club.

hoffy just has to look at the bigger picture and do what's best for the team. he will score plenty of tries on the wing. it's going to be killer on that side. now we just have to strengthen up the right side until hodges gets back.

Short memories indeed if you can't remember 2011 where Hoffman was a great ball playing Fullback...
