How much is too much for Payne? The saga continues...

What is the maximum per year you would offer Haas?

If you look at the best teams in recent history I think it's clear they had some good forwards, but you do need the spine to make use of it, something we pretty much have now, but didn't before.

If he lives up to that $1.2m then happy days and you work on the next contract, if he drops a little or other players start to surpass him as the best prop in the game, then you know he's overvalued himself and there's room to move or negotiate at the next contract... Fifita took a pay cut on his $1.2m contract, but still stayed with the tits.

I think this part of what you said is really key… at his best he is a game-changing talent, but nothing about Haas or who he chooses to associate with (Mundine, SBW) makes me comfortable that he won’t get a huge contract and suddenly relax or even pull back.

If he continues to develop his game and improve then I could see $1.2m being a fair price, but if you sign him on a long-ish term deal for that price and he drops off even a little then it becomes a bad deal very quickly.

lol Sonny Bill is highly regarded as one of the most dedicated and hardest trainers in southern hemisphere sport. There’s a plenty of ammo Sonny haters can use but relaxing isn’t one of them

Yeah I’m sure Haas would be training hard too, when his eye wasn’t on a rugby union switch, a new contract, celebrity boxing matches or whatever other rubbish SBW was pushing at him.

Relaxing because of laziness and relaxing because your focus is somewhere else are both as bad as each other.

I do enjoy him on the field but has he done anything close to what he did in the last ten minutes of the Dragons game? That’s the only game he’s ever blown wide open. Otherwise he just makes a lot of metres. He’s still not a 1.1 million dollar player.
Off the top of my head he was pretty dominant against Tigers... and brought spark in his second stint against Dolphins (in both games).

He's definitely improved this year and is affecting results. His second stint becomes so important for us now because the bench isn't able to offer anywhere near what him and Patty provide (understandably), but they're struggling to hold their own against the opponent in recent times as well.

are you watching the same Payne Haas as the rest of the universe ... because there has been absolutely zero evidence to suggest anything like that will happen with Payne

This year he’s been phenomenal.. but last year he played some soft, very average footy (by the standards of a $1m+ player).

We sign him on a long term contract and there’s no pressure to perform to get paid (Haas has shown multiple times now that money is his biggest motivator) and which Haas do we get?

Not saying anything other than that’s it’s a risk, and for $1.1m+, he need to be playing the way he is this year week in week out. The Haas of last year isn’t worth over $1m in my opinion.

again I have to ask if your watching the same Payne Haas as the rest of the universe. any other forward carrying injuries would struggle ... yet Haas was regularly post 150m+ a game and 20 odd tackles. even when almost the entire fan base turned on him and he was still posting elite performances.

then you add that this year he has developed his game. he's not alway looking for the extra meters. he finds his front quicker ... and has added an off load to his game. he hasn't rested on his laurels, he has pushed and succeeded in becoming a better player.

Agreed 💯. His fucking mother is in jail for....what she's in jail for, and the magnificent bastard continues to punch out PCM like it's nobodies business.. FFS

Taumalolo was similarly ‘game changing’ and ‘elite’ when the cowboys offered him enormous money and the return on investment there has been poor at best.

No matter how good Haas is, he’s a front rower and anything over $1m/year starts to seriously affect our ability to build a strong, balanced squad.
They won a premiership and made another GF with him. He’s repaid their investment already and let’s be honest if JT2 wasn’t there in 2015 we would’ve lapped them easily

Too bad we couldn't offer him 1.5m with an extra 500k per year if he signs within 14 days.

Apologies I could have worded that better. Are we allowed to negotiate terms like the above, as in putting an amount on the table and then saying that there would be extra dollars if he signed by a certain date?

Yes

If we had a few hundred thousand to get hunt here this year and considering Payne is on roughly 850k for this year and next, why don’t we upgrade him this year and next (to the million dollar mark) plus offer what was already on the table for 2025+?
I’d say there’s a chance the club has proposed this but there hasn’t been much chat about it.
It’s another 300k that no other club can give him, over the next 2yrs which surely helps us out over say a 5yr upgrade and extension deal.

The other issue here is that Haas' on-field form would normally guarantee him massive 3rd party opportunities. But the perception he's created of himself (after demanding a release, busted doing dumb shit etc), plus his mum being a nasty human, has limited those potential earnings. Just another thing that you'd love to point out to the family, ie, "your dickhhead actions have prevented Payne from a stack of 3rd party opportunities, it's unfair to demand him to take the most money when your are part of the reason his earning potential is stifled".

Hahahahahhahahahaha this is a stretch even for fox league, comparing Payne to Travis Kelce 😂😂😂😂🙄🙄🙄🙄

The most hilarious thing about that is he got an offer to go to a training camp. Not a contract at a team, they just wanted to have a look at him. The offer was turned down because its too risky and there is no money in it.

Got to give it to their management. They turned a nothing offer into a big story. I reckon old Petey was involved.
