Hype That Amounted To Nothing

Ben Walker had glimpses - and a few entire games - of absolute brilliance, especially when he was given the halfback position. there were a few games where he looked like he was going to be the next QLD/Aus halfback. but then he'd follow that up with 5 games of mediocrity or worse.

Chris Walker is a mixed bag, because he was a very good player for a number of years, even at Origin level. you cant really say he didnt amount to anything.

Ben Walker's biggest problem was that his style of halfback play actually didn't suit the rest of the team and the style of play Bennett wanted at the time, and he was unable to change and adjust. Had he been with a different team more suited to his style I think he would have been a topline half

Who hypes these players up though? I don't see too many of them blowing their own trumpets. Seems like it's mostly the media, and partly the fans, faults.

Bingo. The other thing to look at is why some these guys didn't kick on. Looking at the names listed I would say close to 75% of had 1or maybe more serious injuries early in their career. That can really rock your confidence and it's obvious some guys never recover from that. Then some guys cant handle the pressure, some take the party life more serious, some are just too small for first grade, some dont get on with senior members of their side and don't get the opportunities they deserve.

At the end of the day you need a lot to go your way to be a NRL footballer

Agreed - only the super stars are truly safe IMO.

The fringe first graders - they always come and go. You only have to go back a few seasons and teams are completely different and players drop off completely under the radar and it is hard to make a living off if you're not in the top grade. Honestly - the NRL needs to revamp and get its act together.

Also - if you think first graders are greedy --> think again... these are some of the reasons why you really DO have to make the most of it and rightly so IMO. You might say - hey Hayne you greedy **** why ask for 400 bla bla bla - but why shouldn't he? He could have been washed away as a first grader or just swept through the system.. you make it then go for it IMO.

He's so infulential he can turn Grand Finalists into Wooden Spooners.

Jaryd Hayne's 2010 Season.

LOLZ nice!

But don't speak too soon. He was playing this bad this time last season too.

Yeah but he was playing 5/8 and bitching that he should be the fullback - he's got no excuse this year
