NEWS Ikin lifts lid on Broncos’ roster strategy as Brisbane welcome Dolphins rivalry

If say Cobbo and Paix have big years i could see it happening tbh. The fact we only have one top spine player will hold us back a bit.
I really think Cobbo is going to explode over the next few years.

He also doesn’t look like the me, me, me glory player, so I think he will always put the team first. His problem, initially at least, will likely be he will try too hard.

I am honestly really excited, for the first time in a little while, about where this team can go. Maybe I’ll be diabolically wrong too, but I’m at least hopeful.

Easy to get excited when the only way is up (at least until 2023 when the new team means we could reach the new low of 17th place on the ladder).

Ikin mentions they have a salary cap manager... who is best in the code... I am curious about that claim :)

Interesting that he mentions player rating systems and a (singular) data analyst (maths genius).. the commentator compares it to 'like Brad Pitt in Moneyball'..

It just seems like Rugby League, well at least the Broncos, are a decade or more behind sport in the US when it comes to analytics, having data scientists and generating your own datasets is table stakes in a sport like the NBA, because and it's kind of sad in a way, that just works.

The Storm have the same kinda thing, looks like Dave has implemented his own version of it or something.

Next few years should be good. Coach is the next big ????. Give Kev the chance but if it isn't working...

Hopefully the football program and squad are all to good for Kev to fail. It would be awesome to have success under Kevvie. I think Kev will be much better this year, less on his plate and I don’t think DD/Ikin will let him be so impulsive.

I also think he was the lone ranger for a bit trying to keep everything in shape as well as trying to move forward. No single person can ever do that.

Kevie isn't handicapped with some of the worst contracts in the history of the NRL era.

I'm going to love to see what he can do with a team whose value is probably 30% closer to the actual salary cap than 2021.

Lodge, Milford, Bird, Offa, Boyd, Flegler (still)
The only one that even goes close to making that list is Bird and that's from pure bad luck. Milford somewhat but I wouldn't class him as even top 10 worst contracts in NRL era.

The others were just bad deals, nothing unbelievable.

Mbye is on 900k. DWZ is on 800k plus, those two alone are far worse than any contract weve ever had and they're current. That's two that immediately come to mind without giving it much thought.

Is it possible we have two of the most intelligent minds in the game at the head of our organisation?

Listening to Ikin and DD talk really gives you confidence the club is in great hands going forward and if nothing else our roster and salary cap will be in good shape. Just hope the ideas and philosophies they're working off actually lead to success with the ever changing shape of our game.

Its funny, what Ikin speaks of doesn't seem to dissimilar to Seibolds methods in terms of using maths and a technical approach. Kind of makes me think Seibold maybe Had the right ideas, just his executions and fine details where incredibly wrong.

Will be interesting with this "momeyball" formula Ikin speaks of to see how much we are willing to pay Hass when push comes to shove.

Difference is Ikin isn't using it to coach the team. Ikin is using it to get the roster and salary cap in order and not to coach the side

I strongly disagree.

And yes, sure, I can say that with the benefit of hindsight, but every single one of those contracts @lynx000 listed turned out to be terrible.

Only Flegler can still redeem himself. The rest, when the dust had finally settled, were paid far in excess of what they delivered.

It all adds up mate, you compare those signings to other clubs who get players who play above their salary, we're at an obvious disadvantage.

I would throw Isaako in with that lot too, he's on 500k.
