In defence of Steve Michaels

Sacking is a bit harsh. Just send him back to QLD Cup.

Isn't that sacking him. (sacking him from 1st grade)

I would probably refer to that as dropping them rather than sacking but I am sure broncospwn meant demote/drop him to QCup

Yeah I thought broncospwn meant sack him from the team altogether.

Any other team would of dropped Michaels arse by now. He is a liability.

I have been one of Michaels biggest supporters this year but i have started to lose faith in him. at the very least he needs to be moved to the wing, because i still think he is a pretty good finisher. otherwise he needs to go back to Q-Cup for a few weeks. I still hold hope that he can make it back to the form we saw him in last year before the knee injury.

In place of who? Winterstein deserves to hold his spot and Folau has a good combination going with Hodges.

What ever happened to Tom Hewitt? How's he playing? He always struck me as a try scorer.

Tom Hewitt is killing it. Has missed the past 2 weeks with a hamstring injury however. Should be back playing QCup this week. Been playing at fullback for the Central Comets.

Everyone is entitled to an opinion and we certainly have plenty here. I'll just make 2 quick points:

1 - I am not a fan of Michaels. I don't think he's been good enough to hold down his spot, but he's still better than any of us would be. To say he's not in the best 17 at the club and prob should be in QLD cup is OK, but to call him stupid and that he doesn't have the basic skills from the under 9's is just too much

2 - Whilst I don't agree with every player selection the team makes, in the end I trust the professionals to do thier job right. That's why they are Rugby League coaches etc. and I am a University administrator. Perhaps I should be open to the possibility that Henjak knows more about League than I do.

Um , did michaels actually do any good on saturday nite , i sought of only saw bits and pieces of the game ! [icon_drun

I am still mad at him for gettin dragged over the sideline....stupid stupid boy [icon_non

Out of interest, how many times this year has Hodges set up Folau for a run with a nice draw and pass, or off-load?

And I'm not talking about any times when we're 10 metres out from their line.

It's been said Soooo many times before about the place stats deserve in an overall analysis of a team's and players performance.

I place little value on stats. In isolation from the Big Picture. Teams that get truly flogged have similar stats as those that of teams that flog 'em.

And as someone posted above, for example - Locky may make only a few metres, tackles or off-loads, yet completely dominate a match, or simply make critical moves which turn a likely loss into a win.

Michaels I agree, needs a bit more time, but I still feel playing Folau at left centre, and Michaels on the wing outside Hodges is a backline worth trying.

Michaels can be a really excellent finisher.

As I posted before, imagine a team's shakes having to face Hodges on the right, and Izzy on the left, with Lockyer and Wallace in the middle.

The other benefit to this change, is that Hodges might be able to provide more assistance to Winterstein under the high ball, whether as cover or providing extra height to enable Hodges to go for the bombs rather than Winterstein.

Maybe Henjak is simply persisting with Michaels in the centres as a plan for when we lose Hodges and Izzy to Test & Origin.

Michaels is a shit centre (eg. against Manly). Too small and not good enough to play wing! Reserve grader!

That really makes a lot of sense, but in that same vein, we should be making sure that we blood enough players for when that time comes around. Steve has been in patchy form - not great, but there are worse players in the comp, perhaps the best options would be a week or two in QCup, just to put a fire under him. I'm sure Ivan obviously told him to pick up his act after the St George and though he has steadied, he hasn't gotten better enough to warrant his starting spot, the broncs need to be thinking about the rep season drain.

I agree.
