Is Lachlan Maranta Really That Bad?

He keeps stepping up when we need him, I keep saying I've been impressed with his progression, and I'll say it again. I thought tonight was close to his best game of the season, safe as a house and actually looked a bit better on kick returns in comparison to his last Fullback performance.

He's going to be an above average first grade winger within the next couple of seasons.

Hope you're right. He has come a long from the early version.

I think you mean depth player. I like Maranta but within two seasons he will be overtaken by our youngsters

I didn't say it'd be at the Broncos :P

Someone will want him, he's too safe not to find a gig somewhere.

Thought he had a good game last night. His kick returns will never be his strongest feature but he was faultless in kick defusal amidst some aggressive chasing.

Also showed better signs when running the ball I thought. He tends to hesitate and crab walk much of the time but I thought he seemed better at choosing his line of attack and running with it. Minor detail I know, but his lack of instinct is his chief issue. Good to see him addressing that.

My fave thread on BHQ.

There are two kinds of players. Actually, that's not true. There's many different types of players but just humour me for a sec. Let's say one of them has trouble with the high ball. He'll attempt to cover up that fact by having strong kick returns, polishing off tries etc and generally doing enough to get by. The other player realises he can't catch bombs so he does nothing but catch bombs. He'll practice all day, everyday. He'll take high balls until it's the thing he does best.

Maranta is in the latter group. He realises he has deficiencies in his game and he has improved out of sight. He's got the nod over more highly fancied players like Vidot because he's better than they are. To say Vidot is better is judging him on potential and not what he's served up. Lachlan has actually delivered. Fancy that, right?

He has the heart of a champion which is why I've admired him over the last few seasons especially when contrasted to guys like Glenn, Gillett and Thaiday who are leaking talent but just take the soft option so so many times.

He doesn't skate by on potential and that's why he'll get the nod over the younger generation too if they think they can just take their talent for a walk.

I love Maranta but someone should make a highlight reel of him ignoring the "run inside me" hand gesture.

Every time a player (usually Glenn or Reed) start heading towards the sideline and calling him to cut back in he just stone refuses to do so. Its hilarious to watch them madly gesturing to come in only to be shoulder to shoulder against him on the sideline, surrendering to a tackle. He's done it a handful of times this season and I can distinctly remember him doing it to Glenn and Reed a few times. I think the last time he did it was to Reed v titans.

On ya, lachy.

If that's what he's been instructed to do by the coach, I'm all for it.

Interesting to dig up this thread to post that Shed.
Maranta isnt great at linking inside but then the ones with Reed that I remember the better option would have been for Reed to draw and pass or even pass while Maranta is in space but it instead he draws the defense over to Maranta.

honestly, i just searched maranta and clicked on the first thread that had his name in the title. I didn't even read the op haha. So the content of it doesn't reflect my opinion on him at all.

I'm a big fan of Maranta but I especially love his quirks and this was just a funny thing I noticed watching him play.

Lachlan Maranta got named in the World All Stars...

I wouldn't describe Maranta as "bad" anymore. just average. He can catch a bomb yeah and he's finally learned to find the tryline, but he is definitely a no frills journeyman in the same vein as Vidot.
