Is Lachlan Maranta Really That Bad?

He is not and never will be anything more than the worst winger in the NRL if he keeps playing in the NRL.

He's slower than a wet week, he *never* backs himself to score or get around his man, he can't score flashy tries, he often drops sitters and screws up certain tries, and he's just generally shit.

In saying what I said about him, at least he isn't a showboating prick like Nightingale. That guy is the most annoying try scorer I have ever witnessed.
How so? Nightingale rarely does anything over the top. Everything about him is just generic winger 101 - not that hes bad, but he is a textbook winger. Finishes any movement that he should finish with a try, even some that he had no right to score, and rarely has a bad game. I'd love him at the Broncos, he's probably the most consistently good actual winger in the NRL.

At least he makes errors inside the opposition ten metres and not inside our own.

A little blown out to call him shit and based on 2015 so far I wouldn't call him the worst winger in the NRL, he starting to back himself more and defends well.

I also realise this post may be wasted...

Is he as bad as people make out NO.
In my view he is important to the squad as a depth outside back. I believe we should have a better winger in his place but unfortunately there are only two at the Broncos at this stage. Boyd and Kahu with one injured and the other playing fullback. I consider Oates a forward that is filling in. Copely is not a better winger, he is a centre and for all you Vidot lovers out there i don't consider him even a depth player.
We just need to develop or buy better wingers

I agree about nightingale being a good consistent winger, no denying that, but all of his stupid acrobatic leaps into the in goal area when all he needs to do is put the ball down is what I'm referring to. It feels like he adores the cameras and himself.

I disagree. This year he has shown promise, and I think with the right coachine, he's going to turn into a reliable winger. If you can't see the change in the player between last year, and this year, you're watching it with your eyes closed.

He's just kind of... bland.

The other NRL rookies like Mamo, Nabuli, <insert name of the 3 wingers Parramatta produces every year> usually have one standout quality, usually speed, agility or physical size or a combination of all.

You can see in the way just after Mranta catches the ball but before he scores that there's a split second panic of "don't **** this up".

And that second guess is the difference between a good modern, instinctive winger and Maranta.

He has improved for sure - he was utter shit last year. This year he's just below average.

Haha what? He scores all of his tries whilst attempting a triple front flip..

I can't fault Maranta. I don't think he's ever going to be someone we look back on and think "Gee, remember that team? Hodges, Milford, Hunt, McGuire, Gillett, Parker, Copley... Maranta".

But, for mine he just has very little talent, at least those that are useful on the wing (except for taking the high balls). But that's why I have huge respect for him & hope he succeeds. Regardless of the circumstances leading to it happening, he's playing NRL. The highest quality Rugby League competition in the world. Someone like Greg Inglis is able to coast along on talent, knowing that he'll always be able to demand a huge contract regardless of how out of form he may be. Whereas Maranta would have to be doing everything at 120% capacity, pushing his body and mind far beyond what it's naturally capable of, just to even be spoken in the same sentence as the Brisbane Broncos. That, for mine, is more worthy of respect.

Does he frustrate the hell out of me? Sure! Does he bomb tries that other wingers would score? Yep. Are the Broncos capable of winning a premiership with him on the wing? Well, maybe. And in answer to the OP, is Maranta really that bad? In terms of natural ability, yes. Unfortunately. But just being in the side is a testament to how hard he works, and in that regard he is head & shoulders above a lot of other players in the NRL.

The problem when Boyd comes back is whether Kahu is a better winger than Maranta.

Look, his never gona be the flashiest winger around, but, i do believe his one of the most passionate players to have ever pulled on a broncos guernsey. From what I have heard, this guy lives an breathes broncos and supposedly spends most of hEs spare time going over old vHS rrecordings of broncos games analysing different aspects of all our greatest wingers since 1988. His supposedly once spent 114 hours awake in one stint an only stopped cause he's video player broke down from the constant use. I really believe this dedication will manifest itself into him really launching off the ground in 2015. Possibly even rookie of the season.

I 100% agree with Morkel's description of Lachlan.
I can't fault his application, and the reason Wayne has him in the team is probably because of how hard he works.

I think Vidot has more upside, but I don't know what he's showing at training, so he may be the best option we have.

I absolutely still think he's the worst winger in the NRL, and no, I'm not exaggerating to push a point, I absolutely believe that!

To put it in other terms, can anyone tell me who in the NRL currently, is worse?

He is solid depth player when players are injured (as they are now!) but I don't see him as first grade standard in your top 17

With Boyd to return to FB, I would expect (hope) Kahu moves to the wing and Maranta misses out

Give Kahu some time on the wing to prove himself a genuine first grade winger

The only problem I have with that is that Kahu is a hell of a lot more than a winger. What a waste. I'd rather see him in the centres than Reed and keep Maranta on the wing.
