Thinking about what this means for Copley and Reed. We could just replace one of them with Roberts or we could just move Copley to the wing and play him there instead of Maranta.

Bennett will probably drop Copley or Reed though

Copley kinda has feet for hands though.

I will wait and see if we lose any players before making a comment.

yep absolutely. concerns about his defence and personal issues myself - of course if anyone can turn that around its Sir Wayne. but to lose club men like a copley, maranta or reed - kinda tempers this news a bit for mine. time will tell as they say..

Oh my. Smokin' Joe, smoke a toke in your own honour, brother. I never doubted you for a second ;)

Amazing signing. We suddenly have the deadliest spine in the comp.

We suddenly have the deadliest spine with the addition of a centre?

When I think of an NRL spine, that includes 1 thru 7. The outside backs are only as good as the halves allow them to be. That may not be correct in true League lingo but have a guess what my caring face looks like :)

Nah that's plain wrong, a spine is and always will be 1, 6, 7, 9.

We certainly have better attacking weapons with Roberts though, should be fun to watch, my only concern is that he'll be on the right side of the field, which may limit the amount him and Milford combine.. Maybe he could play a bit of Fullback in attack, that'd be sick.

Yeah, 1 to 7 is a backline.

Roberts could become a lethal fullback, if his position and ball (bomb) catching skills are up to it, which would make our spine the best in the NRL.

Not that it will happen any time soon...

He's got many years ahead of him (if he makes the right decisions). Succeeding Boyd is not out of the question.

I'd say the long-term plan is 100% to groom him to replace Boyd in 2018. Start him off by rotating him in to play Fullback in attack occasionally like Hodgo did from Right Centre. If Darbs wants to re-sign beyond his current contract he'll be early 30s, and will probably be playing Centre/Wing.

I assume the Anti-Bennett brigade will chime in with "But he'll never move his love child from Fullback", I disagree, I think he will when the time comes. (This is assuming Bennett even stays beyond 2017, which is far from a guarantee at this point)

WAYNE Bennett has declared James Roberts has the potential to emulate the “magic” of legendary Broncos super centre Steve “The Pearl” Renouf.

“Steve was a unique player, magical,” Bennett said.

Rival clubs will be left wondering how the Broncos could fit a player like Roberts under their salary cap so late in the off-season. But on Wednesday Bennett wasn’t worried about that, instead focusing on giving him the same freedom on the field he gave Renouf.

“Predominantly that is how I will coach him,” Bennett said.

“I can’t coach what he brings and I want him to bring out what we all love about what he does.

“The team is going to need him to do certain things of course.

“But you look back at a player like Steve.

“James has got that ‘it’ factor which very few players have.

“They just do things that you can’t coach and is unique. Steve was one.

“Justin Hodges was in that category in the prime of his career.

“They are the ones that are the game-changers.

“When it is 10-all and someone is trying to break the game open, they just do something that is totally unpredictable and something most of us can’t do.”

Bennett also revealed that he previously attempted to sign Roberts earlier this year but missed out because he said the message was never passed on.

But when Roberts became a free agent after the recent contract forgery scandal at the Gold Coast Bennett was determined to get his man this time, following Hodges’ retirement.

The interesting part about him coming out and saying he tried to sign him before last season is that it basically confirms that he didn't view Reed as a number 1 option, as we already had Hodges at right centre and Boyd at Fullback, only leaving left centre.

There's hope yet.

I don't think that's what it meant.

Earlier this season doesn't necessarily mean before last season. I'd imagine what the article meant to say was that when Roberts was in the middle of re-signing for the Titans, Bennett wanted to sign him but somehow word never got to James.
