CHRISTMAS has come early for Brisbane with James Roberts poised to turn his back on bigger money offers in order to fill the shoes left vacant by veteran centre Justin Hodges.Set to sign a two-year-deal, the 22-year-old finally made the decision that his future lies at the Broncos on Wednesday morning.
Roberts will join his new teammates in the New Year after agreeing to a deal which will see him in the maroon and yellow until at least the end of 2017.
Roberts has overlooked both South Sydney and St George Illawarra in order to develop his craft under the experienced tutelage of coach Wayne Bennett.
Finally putting an end to weeks of speculation, the centre was inundated with interest with the Dragons and Rabbitohs submitting offers for Roberts, while Parramatta and Cronulla also expressed interest earlier in the piece.
The former Gold Coast star became a free agent as a result of a bungled contract which saw a staff member lose his job after admitting to forging Roberts’ signature on the NRL paperwork.
Having knocked back the Dragons earlier in the week, Roberts was torn between whether to link back with the club who gave him his NRL start in 2011 or join the 2015 grand finalists.
Ultimately the chance to learn under Bennett secured the move with Roberts set to relocate north of the Gold Coast after Christmas.
With a chequered history of behavioural problems which saw him leave Redfern and Penrith before landing at the Titans, Roberts’ decision to stay out of Sydney’s fishbowl and continue his development in Queensland has demonstrated a sign of maturity.
Eyeing representative selection next year, the Dally M centre of the year believes the Broncos can help him make the jump to becoming a State of Origin level player.
Bennett’s first chance to see his new recruit in full flight comes when Roberts lines up for the indigenous All Stars on February 13 against Bennett’s World All Stars team at Suncorp Stadium.
The cousin of Anthony Mundine, Roberts’ move to Red Hill could mean that utility back Dale Copley will need to find a new home.
Copley was expected to take the centre spot vacated by Hodges however with Roberts entering into the mix, Copley could well end up on the Gold Coast with the Titans in need of two centres as they finalise their 2016 roster.
He is also being linked with Parramatta and Newcastle are also in the market for an outside back.
Copley, 24, made just nine appearances for the Broncos in 2015.
