NEWS Joan Taufua charged with manslaughter

Carrigan:

“Payne does carry a fair load but I know at the end of the day he has a heart of gold and he always looks after us. It is a big year for Payney but I know myself and the rest of the boys will be there through thick and thin for him. He is a really loyal fellow. He is one of my best mates. He has gone through a lot but I also see him as a pretty amazing fellow in terms of character. As a club we will stick by him."
“In the tougher times of my career and my life he has been one of the first people there for me. I know a lot of the boys would say the same. There is no-one more than Payne Haas wants to see the Broncos win football games and put us back on top.’’

It's a real shame all that shit went down with his contract/manager last year tbh. I'd love the club to rally around the bloke - and I'm sure they are, but I mean the fans as well. There's no denying he has given his all for the club on the field over the past few years, and we can't imagine the depths of despair those guys would have been feeling. We know it from the fans' perspective but imagine how that felt for those blokes. There's nothing more that we fans would love to see (speaking on behalf of you all) than for this to feed into a "siege mentality"...along with the stuff about Kev etc etc.

But unfortunately there'll be a lot of fans, like myself, who are lukewarm about him, at best, after those shenanigans. And its potential derailing of this year as well. I'll still cheer the bloke, but not like I would some of the others. Lets hope he channels some of his emotions into his on-field performances and finds his angry mofo button.

If Payne were a part of the spine or someone supposed to be linking with someone else, I would agree his absence has affected our pre-season

However, his role is as simple as it gets, receive the ball from dummy-half and run hard, it really is that simple. I can't fathom how this would have put us back too far in our preparation, if he came back unfit or something I could understand but that's not the case

What about when the prop as 1st receiver/ passer like they did a lot last season ?

I don't think we did it a lot, but whenever a play involved Payne receiving it on the left and perfunctorily passing it to the right something good often happened on the scoreboard.

I feel like a stuck record here, but if Billy Whatshisname wants to be more than just the bloke who keeps getting picked because we mysteriously don't have anyone better, maybe he could chase after Payne and try to get the ball back off him occasionally.

I reckon if Billy was able to get a bit of momentum through the ruck and have Payne running off his hip, that would be very damaging. Hopefully he can start to do that. Take a scoot for a few metres and then pass, something like that.

Yep, must be the coaching. Turpin didn't do it either. No player has ever supported Payne, other than occasionally Patty. We've had the most gormless dummy-halfing you could possibly coach.

In terms of support play through the middle, isn't that one of the things your fullback is for?

Yep, and I'm certain Walsh will have the initiative to do it. That's exactly the kind of player he is and what he will bring to the team.

Unless it's being discouraged by the coach. I mean, none of our recent fullbacks chased after Payne, and that includes Darius, who is apparently mentoring the position.

That’s because our previous fullbacks were shit and couldn’t read the play. There’s no way it’s being discouraged by the coach. Nice try though.

So why pick on Billy? I think almost everyone would agree late-career Darius was an absolute disgrace and even earlier, he was never really a supporting fullback, he was more a playmaker. I actually think Mam is an amazing support talent, what Milf should have been.

I singled out Billy because he will be the player handing the ball to Payne at least once every set, after which he'll take a break and watch him trundle up the field with three opposition players on his back. Once he's stopped he'll amble up, pick up the ball and pass it to someone else. Rinse and repeat.

Given he adds ****-all in attack beyond the entry level requirements of picking the ball off the ground and passing it on, and every commentator and fan (bar a couple on here) have singled him out as the weakest link in the team, maybe adding this one string to his bow might be one thing he could to make up for his own mediocrity and in the process, save his father's job.

And what of this is new? Your view on the bloke is the same in almost every thread, what does this have to do with Haas's mum?

If you don't want discussion of Broncos players interacting with Payne on the field discussed in a thread about his mother, then I suggest you move this thread to General. No one interacts with Payne more than Billy.

Sorry mate but this doesn't make any sense at all, even if you straight up think Kevin Walters is a complete muppet of a coach, there's no way he's telling the fullback to stay right away from our most potent forward.

Darius was straight up lazy in his last few years. There's a youtube video going around with his compilation of non-efforts, that's how bad he was.

No it doesn't make any sense to me either. Perhaps you can come with a theory as to why no one supports Payne and why none of our coaches have built any plays around his momentum. He makes the yards, but we never capitalize on it.

I'm naming Billy, because it's the hooker who 9/10 times hands the ball to him. Like I said, Turpin never ever chased him. But the same applies to everyone else in the vicinity. I think Ezra might've tried in his first game or two, but that's about it.

Haas has very rarely even bothered to look for an offload. He'd rather carry the defensive line another two metres to pad his stats. Maybe everyone has realised they'd be wasting their energy trying to back him up?
