NEWS Joan Taufua charged with manslaughter

Haas has very rarely even bothered to look for an offload. He'd rather carry the defensive line another two metres to pad his stats. Maybe everyone has realised they'd be wasting their energy trying to back him up?

I'm going to go all @upthebroncs here and go down a highlight video route to highlight this point. Look at all these offloads Haas is looking to give (not):

Here is another one:

A bloke that size should definitely have a few more.

Yup, Haas needs find an offload in his game along with a steady head off the field that compliments surrounding himself with good people & not dickheads.

That’s because our previous fullbacks were shit and couldn’t read the play. There’s no way it’s being discouraged by the coach. Nice try though.
I can see it under some circumstances…it could simply boil down to Haas just happens to be a numpty at passing and can’t be trusted? Probably went through the juniors just steamrolling everyone for tries and never learned.

Or hey, maybe haas thinks offloading is for the blokes that earn a mil a year and refusing to do it til he is paid accordingly. I can see sbw or Mundine telling him that as some solid advice for the bro.

Probably in the minority, but i dont think an offload is the most important thing for him. I feel its physicality and aggression he's missing the most. Getting that into his game would take him up a level. He might make big meters, but i dont think he hurts the opposition with his runs.

Haas doesn't contribute much with the ball but I think if the attack improves and there is a positive result for his work then perception of his contribution will change.

JT- one more offload than Payne- why doesn't anyone notice because Cowboys scored points on the back of his quick play the balls and runs. 116 tries v 88.

Fisher-Harris six less offloads than Payne.
Campbell GIllard-six less than Payne.

Lazo never offloaded in his life, just got great momentum and a quick play the ball for his attack to score.

Bromich- 21 offloads same as Payne.

Like Wolfie said, it's the physicality he needs. I remember a comment you made waaay back (before or around the time of his debut) about how safe and error-free he is. That is definitely correct but it's at the expense of any creativity. I definitely value that side of his game, but instead of lumbering for that last 3 metres while the defensive line sets, if he was able to thrash around a bit, get defenders worried that he might break through or pop an offload off, it will definitely create opportunities around him.

Exactly that.

This is the quote for mine and presents my biggest frustration with Payne. Rather than struggle for an extra metre or two, get down and play that ball quick so that the team CAN benefit from your power runs.

The only reason we talk about him adding an offload is because he’s constantly standing upright with his arms free and just doesn’t go for it.

I want him to find his stomach faster. He’s a handbrake on the attack sometimes because by the time the ref calls held, the entire defensive line has already set knowing Haas is just going to get another two metres and eventually stop.

But yes, aggression is also needed. Unfortunately I don’t know if Haas has it in him whilst sober

Why doesn’t the club give him white boots and then, on his first run, get one of our blokes to discretely step on them whilst he’s struggling forward 🤷‍♂️

For me even more so than the offload or the aggression is playing to points on the field - it is something that didnt exist at all when Lodge TPJ and Haas were our pack. He needs to get to a point of the field, drop to his stomach for a quick play the ball and let the spine capitalise on his momentum and positioning.

Yes, I rarely see us build momentum from his runs. It's more like hand the ball to Payne, everyone get their breath back. He's never going to offload it if no-one's on his shoulder, and the opponents will know that. They know it will be hard to bring him down, but they're not worried about anyone scoring off it.

But our attack from the middle is pissweak in general. Patty, arguably our best player, has never scored a try. Payne scored 4 in 2019, but managed only 1 a season since. Yes, Seibold got more out of him. Meanwhile props like Papalii can rack up 5 or 6 a season. Bear in mind, Payne is being talked about as potentially a future immortal.
