OFFICIAL Jonah Pezet to join Broncos in 2027

The Perth Bears will also be affected by this deal.

Not only did we get a player they really wanted, but there is now zero chance Melbourne release Munster a year early to become the Bears marquee player.

P.s. the Bears could have done exactly what we did with the Pezet deal (and not just with Pezet) ... But they're dragging their feet

Has there been any chat about how much we are paying? And length of the deal?

I expect around 800k @ 3yrs.

Probably walking straight in on ARey's money (around 4-500/season allowing for cap gains over the next couple of years too). ARey would have taken a haircut to stay on in 26.

He played full games this year for:
R24- Melbourne vs panthers
FW1- Melbourne vs Dogs.

I'll have to give them a watch.
Bit of a word dump, but I closely rewatched both games (v Panthers and Bulldogs). Only a two game sample size but best footage of him at the top level.

Kicking
  • Insanely developed kicking game and beautiful technique. Drops bombs on a dime, great floating torpedo, curved two 40/20s by kicking from the inside:
  • His boot is not that big distance wise, but imagine his long kicking game gets better as he develops.
  • His kicking action is slow and he seems to need a lot of prep/timing. Struggles when rushed and needs to stand almost 10 metres behind the ptb. Many instances of being rushed into poor kicks from inside pressure:
  • Big contrast to Reynolds who is so skilled at kicking on the run (which wins more field position, gets everyone onside, threatens the run play).

Ballplaying
  • Plays very square (does the little step inside to commit defenders before releasing out the back). Has a nice tempo and feel at first receiver. If we can integrate him into our systems, I can see him creating a lot of space for Walsh and Mam outside:
  • Saw some glimpses of nice pass selection in unstructured play but his role was for the most part structured in the Storm system:
  • Lots of short passes to Katoa, who would instead initiate the ballplaying (this is not an option with Riki)
  • Doesn’t run much and is on the slower side
  • Noticed that on shifts, he often comes to a complete stop after distributing the ball instead of trailing up the inside as support. Easily fixable, but poor habit.

Defence
  • Defence is a worry for me. He has a bigger body for a half (so solid starting point) but his current defence is not there yet.
  • He is grabby and rarely drives in tackles or uses his shoulder/gets his body close in contact (there's too many instances for me to link).
  • In scramble defence, he looks unbalanced and prone to getting shrugged off or stepped.
  • Even when he’s 2nd/3rd contact with an already slowed player, he doesn’t have the physicality to wrestle/drive the ballrunner and win the ruck. Often left on the ground and not at marker.
  • Also prone to getting his head in a bad position when flat footed and sort of just ducks and hopes to affect the tackle (reminds me of last season Darius). Again, zero leg drive or control in this position.
Overall
  • Rare to find a kicking game this mature at his age, but he’ll have to work on improving his physicality and defence.
  • See lots of comments calling him “classy” and I would agree. Though would caution its a fine line between a player who has a lot of skill and vision that simply plays at a slower pace to mix up tempo compared to a player who doesn’t have the leg speed to play faster (for example, Hastings is the classic example of the latter).
  • The two games were against Panthers and a semi-final. His played very well against tough opposition, insane for someone so young. Can only imagine another year developing with Moses will level him up further.
  • Reminds me a lot of Hynes (which is both good and bad). Long torso, structured kicker, likes waving the ball around, but grabby in defence and doesn’t break out of a jog often. His pass selection isn’t at that Hynes level yet, but can be developed and arguably not that important for what we need from a halfback.
  • I’ve focused a lot on his physicals and tangible game, but I think with these game managey halfbacks, a lot of their future development is largely intangible - your character, drive, footy IQ. If Maguire signed him, I can only imagine he ticks these boxes. Fit wise, he is the perfect complement to Walsh and Mam

Im pretty sure Pez was on 400-500k as a backup at the Storm with the contract he just got out of. From memory prior to signing that, the Knights were chasing him at around 800k.

I think if we got him for anything under 800k that would be a very good deal especially considering the cap and the lack of halves out there.

Said a multi-year offer from Parra was significantly more money than Brisbane offered, but Jonah was persuaded and impressed by Madge's pitch on signing with Broncos.

We've got the best young players taking unders again to come here to be a part of what we're building (Or staying on for unders), have the best TPA accessibility and availability, the best facilities. Boy are we going to rustle some jimmies the next few years (decades).

800??!!

Jesus christ, he has achieved nothing in the game, hasn't played a full year of NRL yet or anything. Good player with potential but 800k is ludicrous. I'd say his value is around 500k. Reports are we came in significantly less than the Eels did. So lets say the Eels did something in the ball parks of spending 650- 700k on Pezet and we came in significantly lower I'd say we'd be around the 500k mark. Which Braith would know being the Broncos halfback and marquee signing you can catch that up in third parties with ease.

edit: Best part of the deal is we have signed him on what he is worth now. I dare say by the end of next year it will have sky rocketed.

He took less to come here because he wants to win. Eels offered more than us too. Knights are a basket case, that's like accepting a lot of money from the gold coast, it's effectively just cashing a paycheck to lose games.

He wants success and he wants to be #7 not #14 or Left right out which is the wicket he's on in Melbourne hence the change, not chasing the $$.

Game managing halves at his age are so rare. There are only really Pezet and Ikat (you could argue Swalker too, but his long kicking game is average) in the comp who have come in and immediately looked the goods, and they'll both continue to improve.

There's a reason why 8 or so clubs were chasing him

nah, he should stay for unders to repay the faith, if he wants more he should go
He might get a bit more, but he's happy in Brisbane and hopefully that's enough. Dolphins have an abundance of centers, then it really comes down to if he wants to go down the M1 for more cash to get a spoon or stay where he is.

Not only are we a destination club again but our best are also going to want to stay. It's nice to be back again after all these years. Lets hope our current management team stays in place for some time to see success build on success.

After that finals run, the Grand final success and weeks of enjoying everything I could possibly watch I was settling in to just watching the GF fortnightly but the club have decided we need more!

Bless them keep it coming.
