Kangaroos vs. Kiwis

Penalty always trumps a knock on.

Like in the knights game where old mate got knocked out by Jeremy Smith but also knocked on. Penalty to panthers opposed to knock on against panthers.

Nightingale held on too long and pulled Hodges away from the ball.

Must everything become a debate with you

I see that as slightly different in that the illegal tackle by Smith could have been deemed to have caused the knock on.

Would have been interested to see what would have happened last night if an aus player had dived on the ball rather than the kiwis scoring, even with Hodges being held back. I'd bet they would have rules a scrum with a kiwi feed.

Nah I agree with AP here - what was Nightingale supposed to do, disappear? He was running at Hodges, who was grabbing the ball, so he made the tackle - in the second before impact Hodges lost the ball, tackle was still made, should have been play on/knock on. Same as if someone is juggling the ball in the air and gets walloped, it's play on/knock on. Should have been a NZ try. I think they got dudded personally. Disappointed with the Aussies, clearly weren't at full strength. Morris had a forgettable night! I was keeping tally of the errors/penalties from the NSW/QLD players (as I always do at National level) and as usual, the NSW'ers let the team down ;)

I'm not going to bother. everyone knows you can't tackle or hold someone without the ball. anyone with half a brain can see that's what happened. I'm not arguing it anymore.

So when someone knocks on the defender has to instantly let go or they give away a penalty? Not how it works mate lol.

he didn't tackle someone without the ball, he tackled someone who had the ball and during the tackle he lost the ball.

Apples and oranges.

I'm fairly sure Hodges had already lost the ball before Nightingale laid a hand on him.

That's how I saw it. Seems like a joke of a penalty, but I guess if Nightingale smashed his head, it would have been a proper penalty... they are both infringements, and robotic refs don't really distinguish between them much.

Yep, Hodges had lost the ball, before he was 'tackled. He was trying to regather it.

It wasn't a knock on yet because it was still in the air. Nightingale was well within his rights to tackle him. It's not a knock on UNTIL THE BALL HITS SOMETHING AFTER GOING FORWARD. Until that happens, the last person to touch the ball is deemed to be in possession of the ball and as such can be tackled. Again, been like this for 20+ years.

just to reiterate - if you intentionally play at the ball and hit it up in the air, you are fair game to be tackled even though you don't have the ball in your hands. If you intentionally hit it forward its a penalty, if you intentionally play at it but didn't mean for it to go forward, like hodges did, its play on and you can be tackled since you're in possession until it hits something else.

the part of the laws of the game that it appears the refs have gotten wrong is a new part of the obstruction rule - from section 15:

"It is illegal to obstruct any opponent not in possession, even one who is offside or one who is endeavouring to get to the ball after it has been knocked on or thrown forward."

hodges hadn't actually knocked-on when nightingale tackled him as it hadn't touched anything.

Fun fact - they now have finally added the video referee into the laws of the game document!

Where's the rule?

Right now I believe it's open to interpretation because Hodges mistake was unforced meaning Nightingale wasn't entitled to carry on with the tackle beyond a second point.

That's how it should be. It's Rugby League, not grid iron. Players should not be encouraged to interfere with players off the ball.
