THE EX Kevin Walters

Posts slamming Kev for not picking TMM and instead picking Tesi (and that type of thing) really have to calm down. I'm not defending Tesi though. Basically every one of us here can see we are a better team with TMM at the back. Does anybody really, I mean really, think KW can't see this too?
Reality is we have no clue what goes on behind closed doors, and what is behind some team selections that we deem strange. There are reasons, we just don't know them.
It might be KW has seen the Knights game a week or 2 away, and thought, yeah give him a bit of extra time off to make sure he is 100% and then bring him back into a game we will win. Will be good for his confidence, and we can build off that to a strong run home. Who knows? Could be anything. But I cannot believe that a career league player/coach can't see what us average Joe's can see.
If his unusual selection / bench rotation choices were rare, that would be a fair argument.

But they aren’t…

Although it's an older article I thought I would share it, because it's well written and interesting.

I get the feeling that over the last few weeks Kev has been trying to implement a few things into the team. Or maybe I'm making excuses for him, but whatever :

1. The team looks flatter, which could be because of an increase in training to get them fitter for finals
2. Blooding rookies in a good patch and figuring out the succession plan.
3. Focusing on more ball-playing in the middle to try to build on attacking sets.

For me number 1 is a hope. Number 2 seems likely. Number 3 seems like a mistake at this point. because they're too focused on it and need to dial it back a bit for now. First earn the right to throw it around by tiring out the opposition.

Obviously I would like to see better line speed too, as with all here, I'm sure.

I think it's probably a combination of both 1 and 2.

without hindsight his plan for the tigers to blood youth was the right idea, but I think he was slow to react to that loss and keep it as it was when he should of turned back to experience, but he is still a very inexperienced coach he will learn off this.

I'm not totally against the idea of having players do a week of Qcup coming off an injury to get them up to pace even if quality wise they should be straight into the starting team, we all see players on what they produce but the mental side of things is something we will struggle to understand without the same information.

Yeah, I probably should have also written that number 3 is me doing a bit of couch-coaching and probably isn't as much of a reality as it appears, more confirmation bias, but I did want to draw my post back to the article I posted with the comment.

I do think it is hard to blood a player, take a loss and then hook them immediately. Psychology is important as you said. I don't think that it is the worst thing to happen to us right now, but it might have been just too much all at once. A rookie error.

From what I have seen atleast when the run we had since TMM came in our middle forwards have been ball playing alot well before these losses, it just has become more noticeable since it hasn't worked as we where not getting the meters, but if you go back and watch the games, Haas, Fleggs and Carrigan have been ball playing most of that time.

I think we lose alot with Herbie gone, Him and Oates are basically our outside backs that get us going, with him gone we essentially lose one half of that, Lee isn't good at it at all and Cobbo has been more on the impact side like Staggs rather then making decent meters continuously off our end, I think Cobbo will develop that into his game though when he has more off seasons to build his size and impact.

with the bloodying of young players it probably helps going into it if they get told what is happening, so if they get dropped they know it's not because they played shit but to give them a taste of what is to come and they can get an idea where they are at.

Yeah, agree about Herbie.

I just feel as though more recently we tried to move the ball before softening the middle. Seemed to be previously we were coming strong in the second half after having done a lot more middle work early, dragging them in and bringing the edges in to help before shifting it. But again, 3 was always a speculation.

With Patty gone we have basically 2 of our 4 big meter eaters gone(being Haas, Patty, Oates and Herbie), it's probably a big contributor to it, in the Tigers game I felt that was more on us not taking our chances but in the Roosters game we where just beaten in the middle completely.

How much influence do you guys think the assistants have in picking the team ?
Kev does it all when it comes to selections ? Round table ? Or Mostly Kev , but refer to the specialist coaches if two guys are in the frame for a position ?

Yep, the goal of the season was to make the 8. Despite the early and mid season success, if the Broncos don't make it then Kevin failed.
