Maitua banned from NRL for a year for missing training

NRL leaves door open for Reni Maitua as the nightclub brawl truth comes out

SACKED Bulldogs star Reni Maitua now seems certain to avoid NRL deregistration after a club inquiry cleared him of brawling at a Sydney nightclub on Sunday night.

NRL chief executive David Gallop suggested in the immediate aftermath of Maitua's sacking on Wednesday by the Bulldogs that he wouldn't be allowed to play for another club in 2009.

But Gallop backed down on Friday after he was given new evidence relating to an alleged incident at Cronulla bar Fusion which showed Maitua's role was minimal.

Apparently the Cowboys are looking at Maitua, and I read in the paper today that the Dog's are looking to sign David Stagg to replace him on their roster.

Edit* I just realised this was posted in the Broncos thread.

At least their giving the guy a chance to turn his career around. Disregard his history, up until last week he was deamed aceptable to play in the NRL, the difference between last week and this week is one missed training session... start of preseason mind you not exactly the day before a big game or anything. This single action has been deemed the differnce between playing in the NRL and being banned for a year, a punishment normally held for drug cheets, perpertrators or serious convicted crimes or assulting touch judges etc.

If he told the club he wasn't happy there over a year ago, maybe they should of sat down and worked something out a little earlier, he's obviously not going to fix his attitude problems if he's stuck at a club where he doesn't get on with the coach or fellow players, they would of been better off sending him on his way and at least repaceing him in a planned fashion with someone who actually wanted to be there. If they thought it was a money grab, easy set a condition he can leave as long as its for the same or less money then the would know... the guy may of genuinly not wanted to be there.... and they were surprised his dedication to training weined.

You're not looking at things right Assassin. This single action is what tipped it over the edge, he was on his final straw and he fucked up again, it's not this one incident which determined this, if he didn't have 7 incidents in the past 4 years this incident would of not even be talked about.

What a shock that South Sydney want him. They'd take anybody to try and lift them out of utter mediocrity.

That's their biggest problem....they will take anybody. Have a look at the squad, on paper it's alright...until you look at every players work rate

Asotasi was great in 2007. Shit in 2008.

Plus he had cusak in 07 to share the work up front... he had to do a lot more on his own this year admitedly.

Yep just heard that too... which I would say means that the sharks will move to finally sack bird now.

The expectations on the Sharks to deliver in '09 might be a bit too much for them.
It's probably not the way they want it.
With Matuia, Two-Poo and Gallon in the back row, that is just about the perfect balance.
In fact, if you were hand picking the back triangle, that is as good as it gets.
If they don't win it, they won't make the 8.

I would have thought the expectations on the Sharks to deliver...period...would be too harsh on them.

I really cant see how these teams could even come close to having money left for him. Is he on a Darren Smith contract or something???

As Assassin said - Sharks will probably sack Bird which will free up some cash

Bulldogs backed off apparently.
