Bulldogs sack Reni Maitua for repeated code of conduct breaches

December 03, 2008 FORMER Australia backrower Reni Maitua is poised to become the NRL's latest serial offender to trade his wares overseas after being sacked by the Bulldogs.

The NRL has seemingly shut the door on the talented 26-year-old joining another club in the competition next season - effectively forcing him to consider his options in England and France.
The member of the 2004 premiership-winning team has had a long history of controversy and the Bulldogs' patience finally ran out when he missed a training session on Monday morning.

Having failed to hand the club an explanation for his no-show, the one-Test player was hauled before the club's disciplinary committee on Tuesday and handed his marching orders.

Maitua had wanted out of the club this year and there had been speculation that this latest move had been to free him up to move to another NRL club.

But NRL chief executive David Gallop quickly killed off any such speculation.

"If another club wanted to sign him we would be unlikely to register the contract for 2009 on the basis of the information that we have," Gallop told AAP.

"Where players are terminated for repeat behavioural issues we have to back the club or risk the inherent unfairness of the player walking into another team.

"The simple message is to stay out of trouble."

Maitua has 48 hours to appeal his latest breach of the club's code of conduct but that looks dead in the water with Channel Nine reporting he had been out drinking on Sunday night in Cronulla.

His dismissal is expected to lead to Maitua following other troubled league stars such as Tim Smith and Todd Carney to the English Super League.

Maitua's management couldn't be reached for comment.

Bulldogs chief executive Todd Greenberg said it was a dark day for the club.

"This is by no means anything other than a disappointing day for (coach) Kevin (Moore) and I," he said.

"He has put the club in a difficult position where recruitment is now complete and this is not a decision we have made lightly but one we had to make."

The Bulldogs have tried to shed their reputation built up over recent seasons for bad behaviour.

They have a new coach in Moore and made some handy acquisitions in the off-season in former Brisbane duo Ben Hannant and Michael Ennis and ex-Sharks half-back Brett Kimmorley.

And the decision to cast Maitua aside is another sign of a more hardline approach from the Bulldogs, who have struggled to manage wayward stars such as Sonny Bill Williams and Willie Mason in the past.

"It takes more then just being a good footballer to be a part of the Bulldogs," Greenberg said.

Maitua has a long rap sheet, having missed training in the past and lost his licence for drink driving.

He spent time in reserve grade this year because of his poor attitude.

Greenberg said that Maitua was "disappointed" to have his contract torn up and had not intentionally missed training.

His departure continued the exodus of players from the club, with captain Andrew Ryan the sole remaining forward from their 2004 title-winning pack, having lost the services of the likes of Steve Price, Mason, Williams, Mark O'Meley and Roy Asotasi.

Well people you have just witnessed how disconected from the real world Gallop really is.... he's now decided that "stuff it, regardless of what trivial reason you decide to sack a player, we're gonna go right on ahead and ban their sorry ass from playing the game at all for the next year!!!"

So thats miss a pre-season training session = year ban from the game

Hmmm is it just me or does he need a slap in the side of the head with a cold fish "fishermans friend" style.

come on!! whats next.

Argue with the coach = year ban

Run onto the field without your socks pulled up = year ban

roll your eye's at a refs bad call = year ban

seriously!

You might call it the straw that broke the camel's back.

Ever seen a copy of Maitua's history? Of course it sounds stupid that all of this could happen from missing one training session. But the assaults, drink driving etc. have certainly piled up in recent years.

Maitua's a rotten piece of scum. He should **** off with Greg Bird. Good decision Gallop.

The "Big deal" is that he was sacked not for missing training but for numerous offences that breached his club's code of conduct. Had the NRL not also taken the action he'd rock up to another NRL club for training tomorrow. Which therefore makes the clubs' codes of conduct completely worthless and thus doesn't motivate them to discipline their players at all.

Fact remains he should've been sacked after his drink driving or assault charges.

He can go play with his bra boy mates at the beach now. So long reni.

Missing training should be a matter delt with by the club. If the club finds it's happened 1 too many times and decide to sack him, fair enough, but the NRL shouldn't have anything to do with it IMO. However if it's a matter of drink driving/assault/public nuisance and the player has had more than 1 warning, then the NRL should definitely have a say in what happens.

He missed training due to being drunk...I think that counts as bad enough for censure by all and sundry.

NRL can't sack someone until the club takes action first.

Let's put another spin on it. Karmichael Hunt misses preseason training after a night on the piss at Allhambra. Broncos sack him.

Would you want him to turn out for another club against the Broncos next season?

LOLZ Shaun.

If Gallop does let him register for the 2009 season, any player who is shitted with their contract, just throws a serious of behaviour problems (take a pick short of running off to France or glassing someone), gets sacked from their club and then runs to their (previously tee'd up contract) new club.

This is simple buisness to stop players taking matters into their own hands. And if you don't believe in "player/club espionage" like the example I just gave, you are blind. This is the NRL's insurance policy, which is actually protecting clubs. Taking power off managers and players and reverting it to CEO's and clubs, who after all, pay and make the player what he is.

I love the decision and I would have hoped if Alhambragate had of happened early in 2008, that Hunt and co. wouldn't be playing against the Broncos same season.

The message here is fucking simple; if you sign a contract, it's law-abiding. I'm just a layman; I can't get out of a mobile phone contract FFS, let alone a professional sports contract. These guys really need to start reading fine print and even, shock horror, not signing 3 or 4+ year deals in the hope of gaining an extra $50k a season.

Look, Reni tried to get a release 12 months ago. They said no. The Bulldogs could easily have suspected he was trying to break contract the way Hammo described, and possibly that's what they said to the NRL.

In any case, it's totally justified action from both club and organisation.

FFS Rock, get over the "missed training" thing. He was sacked for constant alcohol related misdemeanours.

Did you read that Reni updated his Facebook status on Monday to "Reni has Mondayitis"? That just irked the Bulldogs even more, he doesn't even care.

No, and just as the Sharks are doing with Greg Bird, the club has to present compelling reasons why the NRL should deregister them. Certainly the NRL won't deregister a guy for a minor single offence, and in fact that player would probably have cause to sue the club for sacking him for it.

You don't reckon he was trying to get sacked so he could go to another club, another club with say some of his mates...

That's probably not too much of a stretch, and if he did do it for that reason he needs to get a clue.

Add to that the fact that he didn't even call them!

If I had numerous alcohol and violence-related offences that had already put me under the pump at work, then missed a heap of days and finally didn't show up yet again, WITHOUT EVEN CALLING THEM, I'd be out on my arse too!

Sounds like he wanted out anyway. (Even from earlier in the year asking for a release)
It is obvious he is not happy at the dogs, banning him for year from the NRL is a tough call though. Not a big deal if the player doesn't care about the competition though, I'm sure there is good money in the ESL or France if he wishes.
