I keep hearing how good a coach he is...and I just don't get it.

Anybody willing to explain?

He's a good coach. Got good consistent results fromvery average canberra teams, and developed this penrith team from shit to top 4.

He won't be in the Bennett class but he's done ok.

I really don't rate Elliot. Is he the worst coach in history? No. Is he ordinary? Oh god yeah. Hell, ordinary is the perfect word to associate Elliot with.

I don't like the style his teams play with, his eye for talent is poor and when the pressure is on, he generally doesn't know how to get his players to lift.

Sure, he's got his decent qualities. Looking from the outside in, he appeared to really enjoy studying the top sides and coming up with ways to oppose them (Smith is still the best at this IMO). Case in point Broncos vs. Canberra Round 22 2006 at Canberra where he got Phil Graham to play more of a five eigth role and have him use his speed to get on the outside of the Broncos forward pack and isolate the backline in defence (of course, taking intercepts in that game helped too)

Really though, I'd hate for him to coach at the Broncos.

Initially he did a good job with Canberra...but after 2003 he just couldn't get the side to move forward.

He did do well to get some of those squads into the 8...but he was the one coming up with those squads.

People rated Elliot because of his work at Canberra. But his work there is no better than what Furner has done.

He hasn't done anything special. I don't think he's a bad coach, but he wouldn't be in my top 5.

He's your typical mid range family car. Not bad on the fuel, decent priced, it looks OK - nothing flash but gets you from A to B. Cookie Cutter coach but you want to go for more if you could for sure.

Personally I would like to see him with some epic teams to see what sort of style he would go for - I mean the teams he's had over the past decade have never been filled with talent so he's had to adjust accordingly. I do think he would come up with some offside plays that today's coaches wouldn't use... might not win you a comp but could be worth a watch.

I thought and still think the same about John Lang. His one premiership came with a golden run with a solid team that managed to stay together and consistent (few injuries).

Ditto Tim Sheens. Yes, Sheens has won 4 premierships - 3 with the superstar Canberra team he inherited from Bennett and Furner, and the other when Marshall, Prince and Farah enjoyed a golden run of form and fitness in a comp, a bit like this year, that was just crying out for someone to take it by the balls. I think it had zip to do with his coaching.
