BRONCOS hooker Andrew McCullough says he will not follow in the footsteps of teammate Corey Oates by rushing back from his recent leg injury.
Brisbane’s Mr Consistent, who tore his left hamstring in the Round 8 clash with South Sydney, was ruled out for 4-6 weeks following the injury, his first since 2014.
Hopes were boosted at Red Hill last week when McCullough hit the training track to test out his running and kicking.
But the 26-year-old is adamant he is not pushing for an early return, claiming that despite being one of the side’s fittest players, he will take his time with what can be a tricky injury.
“I’m not pushing it at all,” he said.
“It’s a hammy, so they’re tough. I don’t want to lie and say I will be right for a certain team and then I’m not. I haven’t put a timeline on it.
“In my position, I have to be one of the fittest. I’ve been very lucky over my time that I haven’t missed too many. But it’s all part of the game and I just want to make sure I get myself right.”
McCullough missed Brisbane’s loss to Cronulla two weeks ago and also sat out last night when the Broncos took on the Sea Eagles at Suncorp Stadium.
He is unsure whether he is a chance for the highly anticipated Cowboys showdown this Friday.
Brisbane have to date dodged any lengthy injuries this season. Oates made an early comeback from a shoulder injury, stating he did not want to sit out of the game for too long.
Cowboys centre Kane Linnett made a similar return from a shoulder injury after also speaking of his frustration sitting on the sidelines.
McCullough said he understood why players were working so hard for early comebacks but his biggest interest remained in making sure his leg was 100 per cent.
“You want to come back and help your team,” he said.
“You hate missing games and I guess that’s half the reason why yourself drive yourself so hard to recover right.
“You hate missing out on playing with your mates and hopefully winning football games. That’s why players do come back early and push themselves.”
