Melbourne Storm sold for 1 dollar...

The independent commission won't change much if Gallop is still CEO.

NRL clubs are threatening to withhold their players from all representative games, including the State of Origin series, if the ARL keeps stalling over a decision to implement an independent commission.

The threat is considered a last resort but shows how determined the clubs are to have the code overhauled.

Wow big move but will they do it? Says further down in the article
"A move to boycott rep games could open a Pandora's box as players are contracted to make themselves available or face being stood down from NRL games."

So could that mean every player could be banned from NRL for a few weeks if the clubs dont let them play Rep?

Thing is if the NRL is the one pushing for the commission, they might thumb their noses at that particular clause (which is with the ARL).

Is anyone else chuckling that there's clubs threatening to boycott ARL sanctioned matches unless they sign up for a new governing body? Sounds like something that went on circa 1995 :P

Richardson said clubs had unanimously agreed to support the new structure, which would see the NRL revert to its former name, the ARL, and each club given an equal share in the ownership of the game.

So am i right in guessing we will once again be calling it the ARL. and the NRL will die after 12yrs?

How the hell are we ment to build a supporter base if we keep changing the comps name?

Competition name won't deter supporters. I know plenty of people who call it the ARL still. Changing the first name from 'National' to 'Australian' will just give it a warmer feel IMO.

As I understand it, the competition itself will still be called the NRL, but the governing body will be called the ARL Commission

Same as most sports - NZ have a team in the A-League, run by Football Federation Australia.

So sick of hearing that stupid name lately.

NRL clubs will gather in Sydney next January to discuss the possibility of forming a breakaway competition as the establishment of an independent commission continues to wallow.

The 16 clubs are considering a "reverse Super League" if the ARL and News Limited cannot work out a transition of power, according to Fairfax media reports.

Powerbrokers from each of the clubs will form a breakaway competition if the two parties are unable to reach an agreement on an independent commission.

The next few months are gonna be huge for Rugby League in Australia. But is it gonna be for better or worse?

lol. Well at least they know what NOT to do this time around.

Australian Rugby League chief executive Geoff Carr has offered to quit to speed up the process of establishing an independent commission.

After 10 years in the role, Carr said on Tuesday night he was preparing to leave his $280,000-a-year job as soon as the commission is up and running - if not before.

"We've just got to get the structure right and then I'll be more than happy to stand down," Carr said.

Meaning that he thinks he is integral to ensuring the struture is "right", so he'll step down when it's set up how he wants it. If he really is a road-block to the commission being established surely he needs to step down ASAP in order for it to get established.

As far as expansion goes: We'll see the Central Coast and Papua New Guinea included. Given how much money the PNG government is throwing at the teams' NRL bid, they'll have the financial side sorted. Let's just hope they don't screw up the running of the club.

Neither central coast or PNG should be in the NRL. Ever.

It would be good for the game long term if the Islands got a team however, at this point in time logistically it would be so hard and the mass population are not likely to have the sort of cash to buy the merchandise and tickets for the home games. Can't see it possibly working at a profit anytime soon.

And I can't see any decent player in Australia packing up and moving to Port Moresby.

No that's right, you might get fella's like Sam Thaiday wanting to end there career there but no one will go there in their prime.
