NEWS Milford: we sorted it out

Anthony Milford has passed through the nine circles of football Hell and emerged much the same - still laid back, circumspect and always eager for succulent meal beneath the Golden Arches:

“I don’t believe it’s the end for me here at the Broncos. It’s not true that I don’t care. The fire is still burning inside me and I want to be the best player I can be. But as a playmaker, if you aren’t getting good ball, there’s not really much you can do. I’m only 26, so I feel I still have a lot to offer, whether that’s the Broncos or another club. I have to bounce back and I believe I will.”

Sunset, here we come

Kotoni being promised five-eighth hasn’t bothered me at all. I am not worrying about Kotoni or anyone else. The club has an obligation to sign some players and it doesn’t faze me if Kotoni could be the five-eighth. Competition is always healthy, so I‘m not worried about that. We will see what happens when Kotoni gets back."

“I have heard the reports about not being offered a new Broncos deal, so I saw ‘Kevvie’ about it and he has reassured me that everything is in my control. I have to play well to get a new contract. He said there is no timeframe, whether it‘s one or two weeks, but he assured me he hadn’t given up on me. I definitely haven’t given up on myself."

"I’ve taken it on the chin, I still enjoy myself at training and I will do my best to fight back. For whatever reason, my performances haven’t always been consistent in games. I am realistic about the situation. I’ve had a few discussions with my manager about my future but nothing is set in stone."

" It’s my ideal plan to stay at the Broncos, but if it doesn’t happen I have two kids and a family to look after and I have to do what’s best for them. If that means leaving the Broncos, so be it, but everything is in my control. My destiny is in my hands. Hopefully over the next few months my future will take care of itself.”

“It caught me by surprise, no-one likes to be dropped. Kevvie called a meeting and told me my performances weren’t up to scratch. I had my views against it. I said to Kevvie it’s hard for the halves to do something when a team loses by 50. That’s not a criticism of my teammates, but when a side is on the back foot, it’s difficult for the halves to dominate a game. But we sorted it out. Kevvie said he wanted me to be busier around the ball and that’s a good challenge for me."

"The Broncos aren’t just going to give me a deal for no reason. I know I have to play well and if I do that, I will have a future here, so it’s on me now.”

the more i hear from milf the more i think he is part of the toxic problem at the broncos.

the whole its not my fault/job attitude its someone else's.

that's been the broncos problem for years now. very few in the team do the little extras that keep you competitive in games.

i reckon his manager will be in his ear soon to stop doing interviews like this because i honestly think it just throws up more red flags for any other clubs who are considering offering him decent coin.

Nothing wrong with his comments. I think he comes across as likeable as ever and during all the public flogging he’s been handed, he has handled it with dignity and class. Lesser characters could’ve sooked or bad mouthed people.

it just appears that he doesn’t know how to be better. I’m sure it’s there, he just doesn’t get it. Like when Kev told him to focus on his running he ran pointlessly all over the shop only making things worse. Kev must have looked on and thought “ not like that 🙄

while Milf comes off the field thinking “I did what you asked Kev”
I’m not disagreeing with what you’re saying, but the reality is he isn’t paid handsomely to be likeable / handle his demotion with dignity.

His main role is to play good football, but for the most part he just hasn’t. Some of that may be factors out of his control, but lots of it is in his control.

There are plenty of super nice blokes running around in ISC working full-time jobs, but they’re not playing NRL because they simply aren’t good enough. So by the same token, Milford shouldn’t be afforded anything more than any of them.

he’s never pushed for a release or shopped himself around or spoken down on the club despite being a scapegoat and dragged through the mud because of his price tag.
This statement is one and the same. He’s never done those things because of said last words of your statement.

For the record I don’t want him re-signed under any circumstances and I think he’s a massive on field disruption, through lazy defence and idiotic attacking options.
He just seems like a good fella is all.

Has he though? He’s been put on show by everyone in the game, including Kev and Lockyer. That gronk a few weeks ago called him a thief on live tv. Despite his poor form he has never bitten back and has copped it on the chin. All he hasn’t done for whatever reason, is be better.

I don’t see where the sooking is? Because he rightly said it was hard to try and show he’s improved (he hasn’t) when the whole team got flogged?

he’s never pushed for a release or shopped himself around or spoken down on the club despite being a scapegoat and dragged through the mud because of his price tag.

Hes been a good bloke about it all, he’s just kinda shit.
I agree that he seems like a good bloke, however, he has not come out and refuted what people have been saying about him, because what they have been saying about him has been true.

In that article, he literally blames others for being unable to perform.
The fact he has personally admitted he is a lazy/poor trainer, yet is more than happy to take his million dollar paycheck, doesn't exactly speak of a decent bloke who is doing his best to earn his worth.

I am sure he is a friendly guy, a decent bloke and a good dad/husband, but none of that counts for shit on the paddock when you see him putting in performances the way he has for the past few seasons.

He is done at the club as far as I’m concerned
I don’t care if he comes out and has a Hayne 2009 run for the rest of the year
It’s time to move on from both sides. He simply isn’t the marquee half we need or worth the amount of money he has been paid. We have been led to believe that for the past 7 years it’s always been he doesn’t have the right halves partner or that’s not in his game but frankly it’s all bullshit. You make a mill a year, you should have all the tools in the kit a proper half has otherwise your not worth the money

The thing that stands out the most to me in regards to Milford's career, is i have never ever seen another player accommodated for more than Milford.
He has been given opportunity at every position he can play, he has been partnered with a versatile array of partners in the halves, he has been told to be an organizer, he has been told to be a free running off the script player, he has had every excuse under the sun for why he has not lived up to his potential and i cannot recall another player in my entire league watching life that has had this much leeway in their performances.
Its weird.

At the end of the day though, its a bloody shame because when you watch his highlight reel from his pre-Broncos days, you would swear he could have led any team he joined to the finals.

MILF has always been shithouse in defence, there's nothing he can say nor do in the last remaining rounds that could make him magically a better defender. My faith in Kev will be lost if MILF gets re-signed.

‘Good ball’ would do nothing to fix Milford’s performance. His effort areas are so far off where they need to be, never around the ball in attack. He’s not giving himself an opportunity to actually receive ‘good ball.’ I would be filthy if I were his teammates reading that. I often wonder what they think when he puts a bomb up and stands there watching it while all his teammates run their arses off on kick chase.

He's using the old (and accurate) adage that 'halves can't shine behind a beaten pack' to try to justify his lack of performance and that sounds like a ridiculous excuse. The fact that he even had 'opinions against it' when Kevvie dropped him shows how oblivious he is.

How about working hard on defence so you're not a complete turnstile and your team isn't losing by 50 because they're scoring at will down your side?

How about showing some effort and heart and passion and like you want to be inolved in the game?

How about support play behind adept offloaders like TPJ?

How about all the games where we're not losing by 50 and we're crying out for a game manager to wind down the clock, show some composure and lead the team to victory?

These are all things that lesser paid (and frankly, less talented) replacements have done when handed their opportunity.

Croft, Kelly and Gamble have all shown more during their game time than Milf has with the exact same team. No excuses, he can point the finger all he wants but the only constant variable here is him.

This bloke needs a reality check if he seriously believes he didn't deserve to be dropped months and months ago.
