NEWS Milford: we sorted it out

Anthony Milford has passed through the nine circles of football Hell and emerged much the same - still laid back, circumspect and always eager for succulent meal beneath the Golden Arches:

“I don’t believe it’s the end for me here at the Broncos. It’s not true that I don’t care. The fire is still burning inside me and I want to be the best player I can be. But as a playmaker, if you aren’t getting good ball, there’s not really much you can do. I’m only 26, so I feel I still have a lot to offer, whether that’s the Broncos or another club. I have to bounce back and I believe I will.”

Sunset, here we come

Kotoni being promised five-eighth hasn’t bothered me at all. I am not worrying about Kotoni or anyone else. The club has an obligation to sign some players and it doesn’t faze me if Kotoni could be the five-eighth. Competition is always healthy, so I‘m not worried about that. We will see what happens when Kotoni gets back."

“I have heard the reports about not being offered a new Broncos deal, so I saw ‘Kevvie’ about it and he has reassured me that everything is in my control. I have to play well to get a new contract. He said there is no timeframe, whether it‘s one or two weeks, but he assured me he hadn’t given up on me. I definitely haven’t given up on myself."

"I’ve taken it on the chin, I still enjoy myself at training and I will do my best to fight back. For whatever reason, my performances haven’t always been consistent in games. I am realistic about the situation. I’ve had a few discussions with my manager about my future but nothing is set in stone."

" It’s my ideal plan to stay at the Broncos, but if it doesn’t happen I have two kids and a family to look after and I have to do what’s best for them. If that means leaving the Broncos, so be it, but everything is in my control. My destiny is in my hands. Hopefully over the next few months my future will take care of itself.”

“It caught me by surprise, no-one likes to be dropped. Kevvie called a meeting and told me my performances weren’t up to scratch. I had my views against it. I said to Kevvie it’s hard for the halves to do something when a team loses by 50. That’s not a criticism of my teammates, but when a side is on the back foot, it’s difficult for the halves to dominate a game. But we sorted it out. Kevvie said he wanted me to be busier around the ball and that’s a good challenge for me."

"The Broncos aren’t just going to give me a deal for no reason. I know I have to play well and if I do that, I will have a future here, so it’s on me now.”

Milford is done for us I think, every time he gets a chance to prove us all wrong he somehow plays worse than the last time.

He could go to another club and be a gun for them, it could be another Ben Barba situation where he went to Cronulla and they won a comp but the fact of it all is that he is not giving us anything and we have other players who can provide more.

I can't see a way back for him, even if he somehow got another game and turned it on big time, there would be that lingering doubt "well that's a good game you played but we haven't seen it for the past 2-3 years, what makes you think we should trust you again?"

For mine, he's done with us.

Mate i think he is done in the NRL for now.
I dont think another club will touch him unless its at a bargain price.

Super League is his immediate future if he decides to continue playing league.

The smart option would be to take a 2-300k single year contract with Another team, reset and have a cracker year and bring his value back up to 500kish. If he goes to SL i do worry it will be a black hole that he never gets out of.

He would be perfect for Bellamy or Robinson as a project. There's not many coaches outside them that could perform CPR.

Lol this memory popped up in my Facebook...

was probably pretty drunk tbf
So I got around to watching it last night, I was there that night. It was my wife's first Origin, it was very disappointing for us so I believe it tainted my memory. I was wrong Milf was solid, did what he needed to do. Blood Oates the numpty, should have got the old soap bars in socks treatment for his clumsy shoulder on Milfs chin haha.

I think after that game Munster debuted and had probably the best debut of all time as well if I’ve got my timeline right which was the end of milfs origin career other than a brief cameo off the bench the following year.

I think the Munster and Milford careers are the absolute epitome of a juxtaposition.

There was a time that Milford was clearly the better of the two. He looked like he was going to go on to dominate for a decade or more. Meanwhile, many, including myself, thought Munster only looked as good as he did because of those elite players around him in Melbourne / the QLD team (Smith, Cronk, Slater).

Whilst Munster has gone on to prove he is the best six in the game, improving year on year and totally dominating in an, on paper, completely outclassed origin team, leading them to an unlikely series victory; Milford’s career has been a slow burning dumpster fire that, until this year, you couldn’t look away from. Now his career is nothing more than a Bold and the Beautiful style drama that has gone on way too long and is just painful to watch.

But if you put your feelings for Milford aside; you have to wonder what would have happened had he gone to Melbourne when they came sniffing around. Would he have put in enough to keep developing and become the elite player that he has shown is in there, or would he have been verbally decapitated by Bellamy for not having the mental fortitude and willingness to do whatever it takes.

We’ll probably never know (or maybe we will???), but it is interesting to go back, look at and consider from a neutral perspective.

Reporting in each pre season chubby and out of shape (shoulder surgeries included) it verbal decapitation route and on the fire for sure. Meanwhile, we decided to tolerate it and look where its landed everyone concerned.
